DR Advertising and you...
#37840 - 10/24/07 06:05 PM

The purpose of this post is to discuss the upcoming implementation of advertising in Dungeon Runners. My post, in particular, will be very long in order lay the groundwork. First and foremost, let me say that I am emphatically in favor of advertising being implemented within DR for non-members. It will generate revenue and will allow non-members to obtain benefits previously conferred to paying members only. Personally, I think this will help increase the overall total population of the game and will help to retain those non-members who leave because they "can't use good gear" (a concept which I personally find to be fallacious, but that's my cross to bear).

In regards to advertising within DR, Stephen posted the following:

Ads are definitely coming. Let me outline where things stand on Ads now:

1. Build 93 has the in-game Ad implementation completed. It is only accessible by testers at this point. We need to get feedback from Double Fusion (our ad provider) about the implementation before unleashing it on you.

2. Only FREE players will see ads.

3. The most prevalent advertisement will be an always-visible banner at the top of the screen. It's not too invasive, but you will notice it. Here's a screenshot of this in action...

4. We also show a 15 second movie ad on login and logout for FREE players only.

5. There is a chance to see a larger static ad when changing zones. This chance is based on the total play time on your character. I believe it tops out at 20%.

6. There is a chance to see a 15 second ad movie when respawning after death. This chance is based on the total play time on your character. I believe it tops out at 20%.

Once ads are implemented, free players will have access to more features. Here's the current plan:

1. 100% of Yellow items that drop will be usable by free players.

2. Free players will receive one bank page. Members will be given two additional bank pages.

3. 25% of Purple items that drop will be usable by free players. This percentage will be adjusted through testing...

4. 25% of Rainbow items that drop will be usable by free players. This percentage will be adjusted through testing...

5. Minor potions will become stackable to 5. Major potions will be remain members-only and will stack to 10.

That about covers the ad goodness. I expect it will be ready for release to you sometime in November. I'll post again as it gets closer...

steve

That's a pretty good synopsis of the benefits that will be conveyed to non-members, as well as the high-level in-game implementation plan. It doesn't, however, address the coding changes, application architecture, privacy concerns or potential changes to the EULA. The reason I bring this up is specifically due to the "adware controversy" and negative publicity that Hellgate: London is currently going through. To summarize, Voodoo Extreme 3D/IGN posted a news article which stated that Hellgate: London Includes Adware. In this article, excerpts from the Hellgate: London EULA are quoted:

Quote:

The Software incorporates technology of Massive Incorporated ("Massive") that enables in-game advertising, and the display of other similar in-game objects, which are uploaded temporarily to your personal computer or game console and replaced during online game play. As part of this process, Massive may collect your Internet protocol address and other basic anonymous information, and will use this information for the general purposes of transmitting and measuring in-game advertising. Massive does not store or use any of this information for the purpose of discovering your personal identity. For additional details regarding Massive’s in-game advertising practices, and to understand your options with respect to in-game advertising and data collection, please see Massive's privacy policy. The trademarks and copyrighted material contained in all in-game advertising are the property of the respective owners. Portions of this product are © 2007 Massive Incorporated. All rights reserved.

Consent to Use of Data. You agree that EA, its affiliates, and each Related Party may collect, use, store and transmit technical and related information that identifies your computer, including without limitation your Internet Protocol address, operating system, application software and peripheral hardware, that may be gathered periodically to facilitate the provision of software updates, dynamically served content, product support and other services to you, including online play. EA and/or the Related Parties may also use this information in the aggregate and, in a form which does not personally identify you, to improve our products and services and we may share that aggregate data with our third party service providers.

This news article has caused quite a bit of negative publicity. So much so that Flagship has a EULA Explanation link on their main page with the following text:

Quote:

EULA Explanation
We just made some big announcements about Hellgate: London, and it’s been great to see all of the excited comments regarding what we have in store for our players on day one and onward. On the flip side, we’ve also heard grumblings about the EULA that went out with our DX9 single-player demo.

We want to make something very clear. We are in no way scanning your computers for your personal information or taking any personal information without your knowledge. The only time that Flagship or Ping0 would collect your personally identifiable information is when you actually decide to give it to us. Examples are when you create an account for Hellgate: London online or when you provide us your personal information when you enter a contest. The language in the portion of the EULA that has been cited is actually fairly standardized language that is used in the vast majority of EULAs for recent on-line software. It was unfortunately also somewhat broad in scope and potentially ambiguous in nature in an attempt to keep the legalese at a minimum.

This catch-all statement was included so that we have the ability to determine if someone is using hacks, unauthorized mods or other abusive applications while playing the game which spoils the gameplay for everyone else. We also use this catch-all to protect other parties offering technical support, such as our online provider, Ping0. This is a completely legitimate function and other leaders in the MMO space do it in an effort to stop hackers and provide better technical support. In order to stop hacks and cheats, as well as attempts at outright fraud, we may need the ability to scan our player’s computers for applications running at the same time as our game. This paragraph was designed to be able to allow for such functionality. It is also important to point out that EA does not determine what we do in regards to online and offline for our game security.

Also, this has nothing specifically to do with advertisements. EA has nothing do with Massive or potential ad-serving in Hellgate: London. First and foremost, any in-game advertising that would be in Hellgate: London is there to simulate how London looks in the real-world. Ads that represent this have been in the entirety of the beta, and in fact, have been shown in the game for well over a year. The fact is that we did not agree to potentially have ads in the game just to make more money. If we did not work with Massive, we would have to get individual approvals from every single company that we want to feature in the Underground stations. This is simply too time consuming and it’s much better to have the experts to do it, allowing us time to focus on making Hellgate: London better and better while getting a realistic portrayal of London in the process.

Should we elect to serve ads, they must be approved by us, Flagship Studios. We would demand that they be in-context with the game world - aged, weathered, only shown in appropriate areas, just as the static posters you see in the Stations are now. We have no interest in putting giant, bright-white billboard in the middle of your battles or having you wield swords of Brand X Cola.

Finally, Hellgate: London and all of the online play and components are controlled by Flagship Studios and Ping0. We’re all gamers here, and we’re as sensitive to protecting our personal information as you are. This is why we have spent the past six months becoming a member of the ESRB Privacy Online certification program. This means that we’re meeting the most rigorous standards in the industry for protecting your privacy and the information that you provide us.

We hope this helps address the concerns of our community.

See you online!

Additionally, the C.O.O. (Chief Operating Officer) of Flagship Studios, Max Schaefer, has posted in various forums in an attempt to defuse the situation. Following is a cut-and-paste quote that he posted on both the Blue's News and VE3D.IGN.com forums in response to their articles:

Quote:

Greetings. My name is Max Schaefer, and I'm C.O.O. of Flagship Studios. Wow, this has spun way out of control! With any luck, I can hopefully clarify some things.

On the topic of the Consent to Use of Data, people are reading much more into this than there is. We gather data specifically to address technical support problems, to deliver patches, and to prevent cheating. This is something most every internet game does, and for good reason. We don't have nefarious goals with this, but need the ability to do these things to provide good customer support and create a secure playing environment that's as cheat-free as possible. Flagship Studios is a relatively small operation, and our focus is 100% on making Hellgate: London (and Mythos) as good as they can be. We're somewhat puzzled as to why our EULA, as opposed to all the others that have the same language, is singled out, and are distressed at the confusion it has caused. Maybe EA's legal wording isn't optimal (it's legalese, after all), but it's grounded in rational and necessary concepts that anyone running an online game needs to adhere to.

On the subject of the in-game advertising, poor Kaiser has been misinterpreted more often than I could identify. We chose to have Massive stream ads into our game for two main reasons: It lets us have realistic ads that we approve and which are context-appropriate without having to make up fictional companies or movies or whatever. This really does up the realism of the scene. And secondly, we will make some incremental revenue on it, but it really did start with wanting to have realistic ads in the subway tubes. We make no apologies about wanting to make money as this is a business (and a start-up at that,) but if we didn't think this added to the game, we wouldn't do it. Please ask someone who's in the beta or get some screen shots and see for yourself what the ads look like. It's got to be one of the most unobtrusive, context-appropriate use of ads that have ever appeared in a computer game.

Again, we're distressed by this controversy, and would like to get the clarifications out there as best we can, and we will try to be as responsive as is possible given we're extremely swamped trying to get ready for our big US release on October 31.

Max Schaefer
C.O.O., Flagship Studios

This is a game that I, and many others, enjoy greatly! I also feel that we, as Dungeon Runners players, are incredibly lucky to have a development team that listens so closely to what we say, plays with us and really appreciates our input. We know that advertising's coming, we know how it will be implemented in-game and we know what benefits will be conveyed to those who view the advertising. Knowing all of that and keeping in mind the negative publicity that Flagship is currently fighting, I'd like for us discuss, in as civil a manner as possible, ideas for how NCSoft could avoid the problems that Flagship is having.

Please note, this thread is not about Flagship Studios, EA, Hellgate: London, etc.. I merely used them as a reference for this discussion. Please limit your replies to referencing them as source material as it pertains to Dungeon Runners, specifically.

Lastly, this thread is not intended to "call out the devs" or "demand answers". It's simply a call for some (hopefully) intelligent discussion on the topic.

I've always been in agreement with In-Game Advertising. Why? It makes my gaming habit cheaper(in most cases). EA Is guilty of in game advertising without cutting the cost of their Games. Take a look at Rainbow Six: Vegas or any EA Sports game. I'm happy that DR will have ads and REWARD the players for "dealing with it".

This is a huge step compared to any in-game advertising I've ever seen. We get to play for cheaper, you still get paid, we're all happy. Why can't more games follow suit? Save us money whenever possible!

That being said, I don't think I like the banner ad across the top of the screen. I feel that it is actually quite invasive. I'll get over it once I adjust.

The REAL problem is that if and when I die, I might be forced to watch a 15 second commercial? No. Don't like that one bit. That just means more down time and loading time. I think Banner ads, poster ads, and loading screen ads are fine. Static images, no videos. You'll cut yourselves a smaller market by doing so, because not everyone can have large downloads, either due to bandwidth restrictions or slower connections.

Ads, okay. Commercials? Not so much.

Not that I have a free account or plan on having one but...

Coming from a middle of nowhere stand point I can heartily agree with Deej, Having to wait for re-spawn and a video feed would turn in to minutes instead of seconds. Max line I can get where we are now is 6meg..and that's DSL. We have the 3 meg line now and actuallty top out at about 1.5 max.

Now to chime in on the ad's themself. Dungeon Runners has been very forth coming and out right about there plans for ads since the inseption. And actually as long as it is just random ads, either set by the ad company or DR itself then I see absolutely no problmes with it. The only porblem would be if there is a full time app running that tracks your browsing habits and then targets ads depending upon those habits. For example Battlefield 2142, which had such a stink over it that the company I work for allowed returns for whether or not it had been opened or not.
Also something that might be a viable options would be to allow the free members the option of ads and getting the bonus stuff or no ad and get nothing.

1) I agree with the privacy concerns.

2) Since we haven't had the opportunity to test the ads, it's tough to have an informed opinion other than "I don't think I'd like that". We need to be able to play test the advertising and provide feedback.

3) Like Bogey suggested, maybe have "really, really free" and "free-with-ads" options

4) Have a "continue on to game" or "skip this ad" button on the loading screens, much like websites do

Well, the ads are closer in coming - http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7678&Itemid=2

Anyways, I have no objection to ads. It's a fact of life in today's world. They have a business to run and ads are a part of that business. Look at today's movies. You sit through a movie and are bombarded with product placements.

I'm a free player currently and maybe down the road I'll be able to subscribe again (not currently due to work and Real Life). The only ad's that I wouldn't care for too much would be the commercial type ads. But hey, that's the price you pay when you play for free.

Now what could be cool is something like the Glock .40 caliber crossbow item...hehe.

Being a paying member it doesn't affect me much, but what I do hope is that those ads for non-paying member will not be a bother that much.

Like some websites.... Ad server is unresponsive, the page doesn't load at all (which can be a major pain if you catch my drift, even more if it does that in game)

Now, I hadn't thought of this. I wonder if the DR devs are planning on hosting the ads on their servers or using a 3rd party ad service?

In the grand scheme of things, 15 seconds isn't really that much. It takes longer for your health and mana to regen after a respawn.

Of course, there's a very easy way to avoid seeing those movies and get access to all the gear in the game.

This is why play testing, in my opinion, is critical. Let's make sure we--as players--help the devs to ensure a solid revenue stream so that we can continue to enjoy the game, but also ensure that the advertising is livable from a player perspective.

As mentioned before, the 15 second adds on start/leave and respawn are less than level load times or health/mana respawn, so that's a very minor inconvenience.
Giving non-members stackable potions and a bank page, not to mention 25% chance on items is very generous and I can forsee this cannibalizing their memberships.
The reasons I bought membership were
#1) stackable pots
#2) bank
#3) support the devs.

All in all, the bonuses seem more than worth the ad inconvenience.

To clarify my issue with the 15 second commercials, My problem isn't the level load times/regen times. Imagine this, you're on satellite internet. You're limited to X bandwidth per month, most of which is spent checking email, surfing and playing DR. Now add streaming video or video downloads to the mix. Where'd all my bandwidth go? Now I can't play DR for the rest of the month.

Also, think of dial-up users(yes they still exist). Downloading or streaming media is hard for them to do. It eats up internet bandwidth.

The problem is specifically the wait time for the video itself. IF the regen and level loading continue DURING the movie, I MIGHT be able to look past it. I just don't know how well the video thing is going to work out for some people. It could drive away users, instead of get more members.

Also, regarding Health/Mana regen. Usually, by the time I arrive back in the dungeon, my health is already at 100% - I'm not spending time waiting for it. I'm either running back into the dungeon, or selling quickly to the vendor. So, the regen argument isn't so valid for me, cuz I don't even notice that.

I can understand your concern but I can think of several reasons why I don't believe this will be an issue:
#1) If you can view anything on youtube without waiting 10 mins, a 15 second ad should load in an acceptable timeframe.
#2) I watch a lot of internet television at ABC and NBC. Usually they show 1-3 ads targetted toward one company for a show. I imagine that DungeonRunners would also repeat ads, and you'd only need to download each ad once.
#3) If you're playing an internet-connected game and you're concerned about how much data you're using, you really should find a different past time.

I also agree that health/mana regen and level loading should definitely be occurring during ads.

The download for the DR client is about 400-500MB. I don't envision dial-up users having the fortitude to withstand that kind of download given their connection speed. IF they are willing to sit through that (along with the disconnections and restarts), then I don't think the delay for the ads are going to push them away.

Very similar things for sattelite users. I can't find any specific numbers, but, compared to DSL and Cable internet, I'd imaging the number of satellite users are fairly low. The single Satellite internet user I have spoken with only had a problem with network latency issues. In fact, he cited that as the bane of his existance. The topic of bandwidth caps never came up.

As with most software, it's not possible to satisfy everyone's requirements. The devs are providing a gaming service and can't really be held liable because less than 5% of their userbase has a network connection that can't support the bandwidth of the game.

Of course, there's a very easy way to do away with all of these concerns.

Bottom line: If the devs don't keep income flowing, the game will stop. I would rather that not happen and will live with the inconvenience that the ads cause the free players as long as they don't go too nuts, and I don't feel these ads do that. Of course, it's too early to tell for sure, we'll have to wait untile either more information is released or it goes up on the PTS and see how it behaves.

live_jamie, you need to fully read through the posts. Paid members will never be subjected to ads.

On a separate note, the banner seems to be causing some distress. Personally, I don't see it as any different than banner ads one would see while surfing the internet. My concern with the banners is that there will be a lot of "dead space". That doesn't seem very efficient to me.

exactly.

if that banner ad comes i'd actually be prompted to cancel my paid subscription just on the principle of it alone, there are better and less obtrusive ways to make money

this is bad news for this game as it will turn away many new players

live_jamie, you need to fully read through the posts. Paid members will never be subjected to ads.

On a separate note, the banner seems to be causing some distress. Personally, I don't see it as any different than banner ads one would see while surfing the internet. My concern with the banners is that there will be a lot of "dead space". That doesn't seem very efficient to me.

I know what would work to cure that. Place the banner ad in the center between your icon and the map. Then just place the health bar for the enemy below the ad. No wasted space. I don't feel it to be obtrusive...we browse websites all the time that have ads. Do we stop going to those sites? We don't pay to visit them do we? Same premise...I'm still not sure about the videos though.

I am glad Ripper started this thread. I do hope people take the time to read the specifics of how the ads will be implemented. As always, feedback on this topic is welcome, and I suspect there will be much more once the build goes live with the changes. Hehe

I just ask that you reserve your final judgments on the in game ads until after you have seen and experienced them first-hand. We are working hard to make them as un-intrusive as possible and still serve our business goals of providing as much of the game to free players as possible... and not lose our shirts doing it.

Another option to look at for the videos is to allow people to choose if they want to watch the video, but give them a chance at a reward for watching it. This is used in 9Dragons, you have the option to watch a 15 second video during load screens, after the video is over you are informed how much (if any) gold the "gods" have favored you with. Just something to think about. As far as the banner goes, it is no different than 99% of the sites you visit on the web, just focus your attention on the lower portion of your screen, or you could always skip McDonalds one day out of the month and get a membership

Yeah I agree with DeejMango

That commercial time is REALLY gonna kill me xD to tell you the truth I like the simple ads also but because of the commercial im considering quitting the game Sure I might only be one person tpying this out load but im sure there is a handful of other people thinking to quit because of that commerical time

In the grand scheme of things, 15 seconds isn't really that much. It takes longer for your health and mana to regen after a respawn.

Of course, there's a very easy way to avoid seeing those movies and get access to all the gear in the game.

I think most people are having issues with the possibility that it may take them more than fifteen seconds just to download the commercial, let alone watch it.

This may shock you, but: not everyone has broadband.

The download for the DR client is about 400-500MB. I don't envision dial-up users having the fortitude to withstand that kind of download given their connection speed. IF they are willing to sit through that (along with the disconnections and restarts), then I don't think the delay for the ads are going to push them away.

When I first bought an MMO (City of Heroes, actually), there was something like 1.2 gigabytes of updating to do. I was still on Dial-up, too. Took me three nights of leaving it chugging along overnight while I slept, to get the updates downloaded.

There's a fundamental difference between having the fortitude to walk away from the computer while it chokes on a gigantic download ... and sitting there, twiddling your thumbs, wanting to get back to playing the game while your computer chokes on a large download.

Excellent point. King's Coins would be a decent reward - even if it was guaranteed you'd get just one KC for watching the video. Of course, the best use for KCs is still mostly going to be a members-only thing, but, that KC is certainly better than nothing, yes?

No, it's not a shock. Truly, I would be interested in seeing how many people that are on dial-up actually play MMO's, given the amount of network traffic that goes on between the client and server.

Point taken on the download, though I believe that the amount of players that are playing DR and are on dial-up are miniscule. That's based on nothing more than my opinion and the state of broadband in my area, though and would love to hear statistics on it. I'm not sure that the devs do or can collect that, though.

You might be surprised. I played my first real MMO, Asheron's Call, on NetZero when it was actually zero fee. As well as Anarchy Online. They were both "optimized for dialup" and sometimes I played a slideshow. But I still played. So did a lot of other people. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that all MMOs are still "optimized" for dialup. Luckily I don't have to worry about that now. But I still feel your pain, my dialup brethren.

I know of a few people in my area that still have dial up. It's not due to it's unavailability. It is due to $$. To some, broadband is still too costly to deal with. For others, it's just not available, but they want to play games.

World of Warcraft works fairly well on dial up, you'd be surprised how much an MMO can function on dial up with the right PC.

Understood, DeejMango. My real sympathy goes out to those who have to use satellite for their MMO fix. I know a few people in Australia who tried to play Eve Online that way and it just doesn't work. Mad latency issues. Like you say, not everyone has the luxury of broadband.

A 56.6K modem is sufficient to play most MMOs. You have to expect that loading new zones, or instances, will take longer - but even WoW only requires a 56.6K connection (it recommends a broadband connection, but ...).

In fact, the same is true of Dungeon Runners; the System Requirements cited are:

Quote:

  • Windows® 2000/XP
  • Intel® Pentium® III 800 MHz or equivalent
  • 256 MB RAM
  • 1 GB Available HDD Space
  • ATI™ Radeon® 9500 or NVIDIA® FX 5200 series video card
  • 16-bit Sound Card
  • 56k modem
  • Keyboard and mouse

i won't mind the ads too much. It makes the game easier for me to keep my stuff organized and less trips from the dungeon to the town and back because of having potions. But I want to know if players can have the option opt for ads and have the benefits or not have ads and not recieve the benefits.

As far as I know, free players won't be able to opt-out of ads while remaining a free player. The only way to 'not' see ads will be to become a paid member. More details will be coming soon, although I think Stephen outlined it pretty well already.

    Good times!

[Edit: I did just confirm 'for sure' that free players will not be able to opt out of ads, other than by becoming a member, of course]

    Makes sense, Zzyn.

You might want to offer people, however - once per account - soemthing like a "trial membership" ... all the bennies of membership, none of the bills. Just for a few short days - 3, at most, I'd say. Maybe send the offer after they've had their free membership for a week?

That way, they have a chance to see just HOW much they would gain, by becoming a member. ^_^

    Just a thought!

    I do have a most excellent broad band connection though :}

Pax_Arcana this is like letting someone to smell the food, without tasting it…diabolic I’m sure many would get a member account after they could test it. it’s like driving a good car for a week and then return to your old one. You don’t want to do this

Itchy they are pros. I don’t think they’ll do something to broke the game and make it not playable. And don’t think that what they’ll make from the beginning will stay like this. After the players feedback they will make more changes, till all will be ok

Itchy, I'm sure you'll be fine - the biggest stumbling block for ads is your connection speed / throughput, and since you say you've a good broadband connection, I don't expect you to run into many issues there.

And as for your specs? Memory is better than CPU, if you can only upgrade one thing. ^_^

    can't upgrade anything right now or it would be whole PC, I'm sure it will be fine but even when I'm doing nothing but watching video my pc can't hack large or hd files so if the vids are too big I might have a problem. :{

The other thing I'd like to see is the banner more integrated instead of a big black bar. You know it could just hover between your info and map without actually losing screen real estate.

I think the best idea would be to open all items (except maybe rainbow?) to non-members with ads, whilst not giving them bankspace. Also allow people to continue free without ads but with the items disabled the same as they are now.

The 2 things this does is keeps people loyal to the devs since they have a choice to view ads, and it puts most people on a level playing field with items so people on forums and stuff cant say how gimped you are if you dont subscribe. Anyways thats what I would do .

I you give nonpaying, ad viewing users the stuff members get, what would stop a member from dropping subscriptions? Not everyone uses the bank.

Just watch out with the videos since it will be either streaming, or require a download. Both are bad for slower connections and bandwidth limited users.

Also, integrate the banner ad into the UI, not make a black bar for it. I think it's very obtrusive in it's own space...not so much if you place it within the interface somewhere...like across the top between map and player icon.

A banner ad would be okay if they implement it better into the interface. As it looks now, it feels a little invasive. I'm not too thrilled about any videos, though. My computer more than meets the requirements and I have broadband, so it's not an issue of it eating up my bandwidth or slowing my computer down. It's more that it interrupts the game kind of harshly having to wait through a video to get back to playing, even if it is just 15 seconds.

I have no real complaints about ads being introduced, as long as they're well implemented and don't detract from the playing experience. It'll give me (and other free players!) some great benefits, and help the devs with some cash in the process. I -do- have a WoW subscription going, however, so that's why I'm not rushing out to become a paid member. If that weren't the case, I'd definitely subscribe to DR, and I think I will once I have a little bit more money!

Yep, that's what it means. It will open a regular browser window, but not actually switch focus to it, so you continue to play the game.
