Ad support
#36114 - 09/24/07 04:41 PM

I went through the first 5 pages of suggestions and couldn't find anything like this so here it is.
I think there should be an ad supported server where non-members can use yellow items (not including stackable potions) in return there would be "billoards" with paid advertising. I think with the humor of the game it wouldn't stick out to much. An example would be while exploring a dungeon a random generated billboard would say, "Doesn't the conquring hero deserve a Coke right now?"
I think Dungeon Runners is a fun game and deserves this additional source of income.

Ads are coming:

Ads

Ads

Ads

In regards, to the ads I got some good info from Mark during the meet-n-greet, but don't know how much I can say and don't want to steal their thunder. The idea is to keep the ads fun and in keeping with the humor of the game, however.

I would too if I could afford it right now, but since I don't I think ads are a good idea. I still say funny billboards in dungeons could work too :}

Ads are definitely coming. Let me outline where things stand on Ads now:

1. Build 93 has the in-game Ad implementation completed. It is only accessible by testers at this point. We need to get feedback from Double Fusion (our ad provider) about the implementation before unleashing it on you.

2. Only FREE players will see ads.

3. The most prevalent advertisement will be an always-visible banner at the top of the screen. It's not too invasive, but you will notice it. Here's a screenshot of this in action...

4. We also show a 15 second movie ad on login and logout for FREE players only.

5. There is a chance to see a larger static ad when changing zones. This chance is based on the total play time on your character. I believe it tops out at 20%.

6. There is a chance to see a 15 second ad movie when respawning after death. This chance is based on the total play time on your character. I believe it tops out at 20%.

Once ads are implemented, free players will have access to more features. Here's the current plan:

1. 100% of Yellow items that drop will be usable by free players.

2. Free players will receive one bank page. Members will be given two additional bank pages.

3. 25% of Purple items that drop will be usable by free players. This percentage will be adjusted through testing...

4. 25% of Rainbow items that drop will be usable by free players. This percentage will be adjusted through testing...

5. Minor potions will become stackable to 5. Major potions will be remain members-only and will stack to 10.

That about covers the ad goodness. I expect it will be ready for release to you sometime in November. I'll post again as it gets closer...

Sounds nice, still IMO 25% of rainbows will be dangerious, because then the benefit for members will be much much less as you can find the rainbow for nonmember also.

What about a new type of loot, that rare and that sick skins and that rarity people get hartattacks when it drops?
It would be nice, reason to still be member and you can put alot of funky and awesome skins in it, like Melon Hammer (Just a thought).

They said it is still under adjustment. I think it is likely it will be reduced or even scrapped later. Besides, there may be future updates that are restricted to members only.

Well really I dont mind paying for a membership if only so I dont have the banner and video adds on death or load. To me that is worth the $5 a month. Have to figure they plan on making less than that for a normal player from the adds and that is why they dont get full membership features.

I don't mind ads as long as they are not the epileptic seizure variety. And as long as they do not drastically skew/reduce the game screen.

I do not see any real reason to be a member now.
You can fit all three class gear in one bank page.
As it is now 99% of rb drops are not for the "class" you are or too low of a lvl to be of any use.(speaking as a lvl 100)
Pot stacking to 10 only? Not exactly a selling point for membership. All this does is cheapen being a member.
IMHO there needs to be MORE than this and no ads to make membership worth anything.

But you can trade Rainbows, so it doesn't really matter if you can't use the stuff you get. Besides, I think this game is still quite early in its development, I'm sure there will be new stuff released to Members only in the future.

Wow, I was sold on a membership before. But after hearing about the ads coming, I'm SOLD.

I'm glad ads will be here to help the game stay afloat, but for a measly $5 a month, I'm even happier I won't have to see watch 'em!

It's a great idea! I'm really glad to be a member. More bank pages, stackable to ten potions are awesome new benefits. I'm glad the ads are there to allow a better experience for free players, too. I hate ads, so I'll be keeping my membership.

Once trade windows are introduced, that could be a member-only benefit, too.

Also, I hope the ads are properly targeted toward gamers. I would rather see movie trailers than tampon commercials.

I think the always-visible ad at the top is tough to swallow. Otherwise, I would consider being a Free member. That is most invasive form of ads in a game I have ever seen. I'm not sure who wouldn't pay the $5 to have the immersion of this good game. I think I could handle the movies etc, but the banner is a bit much. But if there are people who can handle that and it keeps the game going, then it is a good thing.

I hope there are more benefits for paying members than what has been laid out so far. But I don't think there is. If there were more, I don't know why they could not be made known.

I suppose the invasion will really depend on your monitor resolution. I play at 1920X1200, so it would be relatively small. I also don't see it as being too different from websites where there's almost always banner ad content (which is very often ignored).

I may be mistaken, but resolution doesn't really doesn't have anything to do with it. It's all relative to your screen space. It will take up roughly 10% of your screen vertically. But I agree that it will not be unlike those websites with the banner at the top.

A screenshot was very nicely provided by S. That says it all.

Those are contradictory statements since resolution is what makes things relative to your screen space. At 800 X 600, the banner might be very intrusive, whereas it's not so intrusive at 1920X1200.

That being said, for my non-member characters, I'd rather see the banner at the bottom of the screen rather than at the top. Overall, this would be less intrusive and it would give the illusion of having more screen real estate since you wouldn't have to look down your screen to begin play...

Personally I think the bottom right with no black border around it wouldnt be to bad, and a popup that says you are now leaving when you click it to alleviate misclicks.

Know what'd be cool? If you could pick how much advertisement you saw, and that determined how many features that unlocked. Assign a point value to each advertisement avenue, and then that determines what you can unlock.

So it'd be like,
Banner on top at all times - 10 points.
Banner on left - 10 points.
Intro Still Advert - 3 points.
Intro Movie Advert - 5 points
Zone Change Still - 3 points
etc etc.

And then it'd be, like,
5 points - stack potions, 10 points - use yellows 10%, 20 points - use yellow 25%, purple 10%, 50 points- use rainbow, whatever, etc.

Well, I think it'd be cool. It'll never happen, though. Too complicated.

I'd much rather see advertisements than pay money. It's win-win. Though I prolly won't play very long if more content doesn't become available. Meh.

I would like to say thanks for the update on ads!
As a non member I would like to say that getting to use rainbow stuff is probably too much. The 25% purple is a good exchange for the fact that there will be more ads then originally expected.

How about, "To unlock this [purple, rainbow, whatever] item, you must earn X more ad points / wait Y more minutes." You get credit for playing with advertisements displayed, or watching them, or whatever. Members don't have to do that.

Just a thought.

Here's an incentive to be a paying member that should be easy for them to do, instead of making major pots stackable to 10, make it like 25.... something more significant than 10 anyways. That change should be the same level of difficulty for the coders as making it 10, and it'd make paying members happier about it.

Not sure why people are never happy with an improvement and always want more. As a member 10 is very much worth it. But then I am also a paying member b/c I enjoy the game and feel the devs deserve to eat for their work.

I started playing Dungeon Runners yesterday and I can say it is a fun, hilarious game. I am playing the game free for now since I don't mind the ad when you start or stop playing, but I don't like the banner ad. It's not that I dislike ads in general. It's more that I think it takes away from the immersion while you are playing. When the banner ad goes black when it's about to load a new ad and then displays a bright white ad, it's distracting. I think it will keep people from even wanting to play the game, ad supported. Please spare me your, if you don't like it then just pay comments, because they offer the ad supported gameplay as an option, and a comment like that would sound like you are saying there is only one option.

I agree too. The white banners clash like crazy. I spent several hours on my "free" account today. I've pretty much trained myself not to notice the banner unless I want to. Still, white sure hits the eyes hard...

We're still working the kinks out of the ad approval process. I expect it's going to take us a bit of time to get it smooth.

On a similar note, the new death movie today for T-Mobile is 30 seconds. We don't want any death movies to be that long. 15 seconds, tops. We're talking with Double Fusion and getting our requirements across to them.

We prefer ads that match well with the game, no doubt.

I didn't mind the white banner at all. On my comp it kind of added a new lighting effect. It was kind of like a day/night cycle as the banner switched from white to black.
