Thank you for clarifying, Anson. I was pretty sure that was it, but the wording was a little weird.

About that part, we need to wait awhile.
Yet.. I have such a bad memory damit, I think it was stated that 45.000+ people play the game so far? Anyway, 14.000 members are there already, thats stated. Thats 31.000 free players or so.
Banners are per click/view, but I am 99% sure this will be clicks only (Else DR is going to be uber millionair). I will not name a price per click, but I can say that they might even get more money out of ads then 5 bucks a month.

I am happy for the nonmembers about the browser, someone with a small screen got more chance to click on it accidently, and can be highly annoying when your game closes. With slow computer you need to wait and wait, finally there switch back to game and 30 sec further = Completely dead.
That will sure make less complaints

Now if a dev is seeing this question, ehh.. Do the banners refresh on x minutes? Or is it static as long as your logged in?

Really? Wow. Totalling the server numbers, I usually see maybe 500-750 people on at a time. Granted, there may be some other hidden (foreign) servers but that's a wide gap.

This game appeals to a very casual crowd. Most players login for less than an hour, so there's lots of turnover and very low concurrency. Also, there tend to be weekly and monthly peaks.

As Ripper said there is a very casual crowd so the total server number is not indicative of the total members. I dont think there are hidden servers though. Last we heard the European servers were going to be brought online but havent heard anything since then.

So, focus remains on DR but opens a separate window? I can live with that. As for ads making more money than memberships...Dont know. if it's a per click basis, not very likely. But, if the companies pay an upfront amount, could be true. It's all about implementation at this point.

I'm now a little less concerned.

Oops. I have to go back on what I said. I was just talking to the other programmers, and that's not completely true. If you're playing Dungeon Runners in a window, then: yes, clicking on the ad will open up a browser window without interrupting your game play. However, if you're playing the game in full screen mode, opening up that browser window will cause the game to minimize immediately.

It's a technical problem, and not the way it was designed or we want it to work - and myself or someone else will try to keep everyone informed if this changes again.

But.. originally it was the plan to let a browser open in whatever mode you are? I know that if thats the case you people will go on until it works lol

I do not like the idea of advertising as presented. I have been playing DR for a little over two weeks and I am really enjoying this game. I am strongly leaning towards gettting a memberership which is saying a lot for me.

I really like how the developers learned from other games' mistakes and keep the annoying aspects out of DR. Which is why I am a bit confused about the advertising concept. I understand the point about bringing in revenue and keeping the game afloat. I sure do not want to see DR go away because of lack of revenue. But, I also do not want to see annoying things put into DR just so it can stay around.

I think the advertising will be annoying and will hinder the "fun" factor. The banner ads will be annoying because it takes a chunk of the screen to show the banner ad. I like playing in full screen mode and the banner ad is going to reduce my game screen. I find it irritating to play in anything but full screen mode so the banner ads are constantly going to annoy me. While websites do have banner ads I can also scroll down to see the full website. The banner ads on websites don't affect my resoultion of the website per say but the banner ads on DR will affect my game resolution. So yeah I don't like the banner ad conscept on DR.

As for the 15 sec "commercials" I think that will be really annoying too. Having to be forced to watch an ad instead of playing the game is annoying. I am dying a bit which isn't so bad when I can just walk a little and jump right back into the action or sell some things and then jump back in. Being peanlized for dying and having to wait will throw off the whole "fun" of the game. I will be worrying that if I die I'll have to watch another commercial and that will not be fun at all.

While the added benefits of using better items may be appealing I don't think it's worth it. My last time playing I got my first RB (I'm level 17, taking it slow enjoying the game and learning the aspects of it). Being a nonmember I know I can't use the rainbow. I either have to sell it to the shop or give it away to a member. That is fine, in fact it's making me consider being a member. But, under the system where I am a nonmember and a RB drops and I have a chance at being able to use the RB but then I still can't use it because I didn't get the right roll will just piss me off.

The advertising concept on DR just seems to me to be annoying and is not in keeping with the "just plain fun" aspect of the game. Maybe I'm missing something in how I understand the concept but if I'm not then I think it will be frustrating and take the fun out of the nonmember game.

(Note: This is my first post. I created this board username so I could post on this topic because I feel strongly about it. Also sorry for the long post, but I did make it as concise as I could. Thanks for reading.)

The ads are coming. The code is already there and functioning, so I doubt that the devs are going to backtrack on it. Especially since many of the people posting here have been for it.

Keep in mind that the ads are supposed to drive people to pay for a membership, just like the other annoyances in the game. Non-stackable potions, no access to gear higher than blues, no bank pages. These are all supposed to make you think that $5/month is worth it. Of course, no one by you can answer that.

At least, with ads, they're giving as good as they're taking and adding benefits for those who still wish to be free members along with benefits to members. At this point, the only thing I think that will be tweaked is if rainbows will be allowed (they've stated they will, but I hope they backtrack on that) and what the final percentage chance of a non-member purple and rainbow calculated for drops.

Even with these added "benefits", the annoyance factor of chasing these non-member drops will be enough to drive more people to membership, which is what it's designed to do.

I'm glad you felt strongly enough to register on the forums to post your opinion. It takes cajones to go online and post a dissenting opinion and I hope we hear more from you on the forums. However, as for the ad topic, I think it's already bound for destination and the only thing that'll change is the speed at which we get there.

Of course, there's a very easy way around all of this, which you have already pointed out that you were leaning towards anyway.

I am much looking forward to the ads as I will be able to enjoy the game more without additional cost. I was just wondering, though, if there is an official date for ad implementation. I have looked, but cannot find one. Anyone know?

Thank you Elad_Baats. I am not going to join the PTS server, seeing as I do not actually benefit from the ads there, but it is good that extra content will come soon.
P.S. Might I suggest spell check?

I really dislike the advertising concept that will be coming out. I dislike it so much that I am not going to play DR anymore. It is a shame too because I really like the game as is. But, the advertising is just so insidious and potentially system crippling that it's not worth it for me play DR anymore.

(To be clear: I am quite aware that advertising will only be on the free game and there will be no advertising on the member game.)

As I already stated in my previous post I was playing the free game to see if I wanted to pay $5 a month. I think the game is very much worth $5 a month and I would be paying that right now and have bought the guide too IF I didn't know about the advertising concept.

But, instead of paying I decided to think about the free game with advertising and if after playing that would I want to pay to be a member. That's a simple answer for me and I wouldn't want to pay for membership after playing with advertising because I would think the advertising made the game unplayable and I would gladly NOT pay.

Well that’s my decision regarding this. Bye.

How about you actually wait and see what it's really like and if it really affects playability?

I understand that some people are strongly opposed to advertising in games. That's just how some folks are...

I'm one of those folks. I personally dislike advertising on TV, in games and on the radio. So much so that I happily pay for Sirius satellite radio to avoid the commercials and censorship! This is why we provide an opt out on the ads. For just $5 you'll never see another ad.

We've done a good job, in my opinion, to reduce the impact of this advertising on the free player. It's attractive and somewhat entertaining.

That being said, I don't believe that the advertising makes the game any better. It does allow us to offer more of the game for "free" because the advertisers are underwriting your free game time.

At the end of the day, we're trying out this ad-based model as an experiment. Well, that and we need to make more money. That's one of the things I love about working on Dungeon Runners... we get to try new stuff for the company.

Did you know that each free player costs us money? Advertisements will allow us to give you more game for "free".

I do make two predictions, however:

1. With ads, free players will avoid dying because the death penalty (after one hour of /played time) is a commercial.

2. With ads, our subscriber numbers will drop as folks revel in the wonder of mostly unfettered FREE access to Dungeon Runners.

It's gonna be a fun time!

You really think the subscriber numbers will drop, Stephen? I would make just the opposite prediction...that they will rise. (However, I understand that the advertisers would like to see the subscription numbers drop, just so more free players will see their adds, hehe).

Its a new model for generating MMO revenue no doubt, and Im sure the industry will be watching closely. But I suspect the distracting adds will drive more free players to subscribe.

Either way NC Soft wins. More free players = more advertising revenue, and more subscribers = more subscription revenue. Its a pretty darned good plan. Im cheering for anything that generates more revenue for you guys, because more revenue = more and better quality game content for us.

Btw, I deeply appreciate your open and frequent discussions with players on these boards. That alone is a major selling point for this game, to me. You guys listen....and thats a huge first step toward making a quality player friendly game.

I disagree with #2. I think there will be some shuffling-about, but at $5/month DR is already quite inexpensive ... and plenty of people will pay the fee JUST to get rid of the ads.

Seems to me, with half of the people here thinking subscriber numbers will drop and half thinking they'll go up, they can only stay the same. True, some people may cancel subscriptions when they realize that non-members are getting nearly as much as them, but also true is the fact that non-members may get a subsription to avoid ads.
All in all, it's a good scheme...
