How character stats are calculated Version 2
#26649 - 07/01/07 08:34 PM

This post arose from another thread in the player guides forum. I posted my ideas there but have since messed about with other characters and I think I have worked out how things like HP, MP and so on are calculated. This is a working hypothesis I cannot prove these or state that this is how it is done but this is how I think things are calculated. If you spot an error please tell me and if when using the formula's below come out with a different answer to me post here so I can modify things.

First a run through of what attributes affect what.

Strength(STR) - this affects melee damage and defence

Agility(AGI) - this affects ranged damage and attack rating

Endurance(END) - this affects your hit points(HP)

Intelligence(INT) - this affects your mana points(MP) and all offensive skill damage except for butcher and cleave from the fighter skill trainer

The Basic Equations:

HP = [(25*(1+health per END bonus as a decimal))*END]+[16*level]+extra HP

MP = [(17*(1+mana per INT bonus as a decimal))*INT]+[5*level]+extra MP

AR = [(14*AGI)*(1+percentage AR bonus as a decimal)]+extra AR

DEF= [(8.25*STR)*(1+percentage DEF bonus as a decimal)]+Armours DEF rating+extra DEF

Some terms explained:

health per END bonus as a decimal - this refers to bonuses from passives such as gym freak which would mean 0.75 is added or bookworm where -0.5 is added.

mana per INT bonus as a decimal - this refers to bonuses from passives such as bookworm with would mean 1.00 is added or average BMI where -0.1 is added

+extra X - some equipment gives +XXX HP, AR or Def this is where this is added

percentage AR bonus as a decimal- some equipment gives +1% AR this would mean that 0.01 is added here

percentage DEF bonus as a decimal - some equipment gives +5% Def this would mean that 0.05 is added here

The Damage Equations:

The above equations I am very happy with, the damage equations are where it gets tricky. The below damage equations are only estimates at the moment.

Min Melee Damage = [0.6*STR]+Min weapon damage
Max Melee Damage = [1.75*STR]+Max weapon damage

Min Ranged Damage = [0.75*AGI]+Min weapon damage
Max Ranged Damage = [1.5*AGI]+Max weapon damage

Skill damage is not included at the moment as there is no way to determine what the base damage of a skill is as it is not possible to go to 0 INT. I am currently requesting data to help refine the above damage equations and to try and solve the skill damage equation. If you wish to help with the data collection click the appropriate link below:

Melee Damage
Ranged Damage
Skill Damage

Critical Hit Equation

I have decided to add this in as lately there has been a lot of posts on the forums about the way critical hits are calculated. There is a base 3% chance to perform a critical hit bonuses to the critical hit chance effect this base value by the following equation:

Critical Chance(%) = 3 * (1 + (Total bonus Crit chance/100)

The total bonus crit chance is the number you get from adding up all the bonuses from equipment with things like +X% critical. Melee criticals stack with each other and ranged criticals stack with each other but melee and ranged don't stack together.

The Tohit Equations:

Currently I have not found a way to calculate the tohit equations The below equation is only supposition and may be wrong altogether (it most likely is) but it is the only way I can see it working.

0.05 < tohit < 0.95

tohit = base tohit * [(AR/target def) + ((your level – target level)/10)]

The above equations would mean that you can never have a worse than 5% chance tohit and a better than 95% chance tohit. I would assume that the base tohit value would be around 50%.

Well that is it, hope it makes sense and is useful. Questions and comments welcome.

Many Thanks

Flydd

I will look at all of the equations more tomorrow. Also if you look in the mage section there are a few threads about spell damage and how INT affects it. But 2 things:

1. AGI does not affect attack rate but attack rating (both ranged and melee). This is your chance to hit not the speed in which you attack. That is determined by the weapon + gear modifiers + speed buff.

2. INT affects spell damage not all skills. Fighter skills such as cleave and butcher, all resistances are not affected by INT.

Sorry I meant attack rating will change that. Will change spell damage as well. It was originally spell damage but I thought that may imply it affects only mage skills.

At level 1 you have 10 END so minimum HP you can get with no bonuses is 25*10+16*1= 266

500% crit bonus is 500% of 3% of 1 which is 15% of 1 plus the base of 3% = 18% of 1 right?

How I figure out Crit Hit is:

Critical Chance (%) = 3 + 3*(Total bonus/100)

For eldritchs example of +500% crit chance:

3 + 3*(500/100) = 18%

THe way the equation works if you have 500% then:

crit = 3 * (1 + 500/100) = 3 * (1+5) = 3*6 = 18%

Your program is wrong as it comes up with the wrong figure for lvl 1 HP so either there is something wrong with your equations or you have a bug in the program as the first equations are as far as I can tell correct.

So Im corrected in believing now that an item with a 74% crit chance will NOT make my crit chance 77%, but will add 74% of 3 to my original crit chance, making it 5.14 or some such number.

So I understand most of those, but how can I calculate DPS from min/max damage and speed? What does each speed rating mean in shots per second or shots per minute?

DPS is tricky as to do an accurate calculation you need to involve the tohit chance which we dont know.

The simple DPS equation is:

[min + max]/2*Attack Speed

A more complex DPS equation which is slightly more accurate is:

[[min + max]/2]*[1+[0.03*Bonus Crit Percent/100]]*[1/Attack Speed]

Speed on the character sheet is calculated as seconds per shot (which is the inverse of shots per second, as you would normally think of). So in order to calculate average Damage per Second, you need to average your min and max damage and factor in your firing rate:
[(Min Dmg + Max Dmg)/2]/Attack Speed

So how many seconds per shot for each speed rating? In other words how many seconds per shot for Very Fast, Fast, Normal and so forth?

Your attack speed is on your character sheet. The character sheet also includes the min and max damage to use in these equations.

Dont forget that +elemental damage to weapon attack is added last and not crittable (is that a word?) and doesnt show up in the character sheet. And mobs hold a certain degree of def/resist vs elemental attacks. Like my shoulds adding 88 poison dmg per attack, they only do 53 dmg per attack to the Queen...

My guess is that that is what ppl are looking for. Heck, everyone can see their hp/mana by just bringing up the char sheet. Total redundant information to be able to 'calculate' ones health. But DPS, now that is good to know

To start with there is no attack speed in there. Attack rating isnt important for DPS at the moment as there is no way to know the way the tohit equation works. I have posted a theory about the equation but that is all it is.

I have already posted some DPS equations on the previous page. Here they are again:

The simple DPS equation is:

[min + max]/2*Attack Speed

A more complex DPS equation which is slightly more accurate is:

[[min + max]/2]*[1+[0.03*Bonus Crit Percent/100]]*[1/Attack Speed]

Another even more complex equation includes the elemental damage I have not worked out as I havent tested how critical hits and elemental damage work together.

I have a question about chance to block; is your chance to block figured only from what your shield displays as the %chance to block, or does either Agi/Str or both play into the chance to block equation at all (not your Defense, but your chance to block.)???

This is wrong. I don't mean to be rude but let's think for a moment. Looking only at the first equation, we have (min+max)/2 So far so good. But *attack speed? seriously? Let me explain why this is wrong, since this has gone uncorrected this long.

Let's say we have an attack speed of .5, and our dmg is 10-100. (10+100)/2=55. This means our average damage per hit is 55. Now, let's multiply by our attack speed like the equation above tells us to. 55*.5=27.5. Wait... So, if I attack twice a second my DPS is LOWER than that of my average hit dmg, which happens to get applied twice a second. So, to correct an error, and I'm amazed has gone yet uncorrected. the equation is (min+max)/2/attack speed.

I do have a question however, though I worry for the accuracy of the response. I want to determine dual wield DPS, and can't seem to wrap my head around the exact order to do things in. I'm sure it's simple, but I'm missing it (much like I believe Flydd did). Now, figuring one weapons DPS is easy. even figuring both is easy, but my question is, do I average the 2 DPSs, or, do I do something different?

((min1+max1)/2/(atkspd))+((min2+max2)/2/(atkspd))/2
or maybe
(min1+min2+max1+max2)/4/(atkspd) though this just seems wrong.

Any input?

I have to say that the post before was not clear ... although I know there are other posts where it is written differently as you have done. I think that they forgot a set of parenthesis on that as in: (min+max)/(2*attack speed) which would be the same as (min+max)/2/attack speed.

As for dual wield I cant say there is an accurate way to calculate this. I know that dual wield is giving an additional attack speed bonus of 20% and I am pretty sure this is reflected on the character sheet.

((min1+max1)/2/(atkspd))+((min2+max2)/2/(atkspd))/2

This may be close but I would have check with numbers in game to see. I am not sure about the final division by 2. Also would need to calculate critical hits into that.

The formula for ~estimated~ Average DPS is:

((Min + Max) / 2) / AR = Avg DPS

For dual wield, I believe it's simply:

(Avg DPS1 + Avg DPS2) / 2

Nope, this would mean that you would be better off just using the weapon with the best dps. As adding a second weapon (with lower dps) would lower your overall dps.

The problem I see is that the avg dps of each individual weapon is higher when used in dual wield (due to the speed bonus) than it is when equipped alone. Not sure if this then makes it the average of the 2 weapons or not. By the time i played last night I forgot to test this out will try to tonight.

How do I find melee dps of my character with all items equip'd. regardless of DualWield or Single?
I've read through this thread and now I am more confused then when I started. So-and-so is wrong, so-and-so is right, does anyone have a correct formula to find this?

The reason for this is an exact answer for dual wield has not been found. So no we cant give you the formula. At least until the devs release how exactly dual wield is calculated.

For dual wield, I believe it's simply:
(Avg DPS1 + Avg DPS2) / 2
This statement is true. I did some testing to see how many swings my fighter does in 30 seconds with various weapons.
1. Equip 2 x 1H... speeds on character sheet are 0.44 and 0.47... swings in 30 seconds = 65 to 67 = average speed of 0.455 and that is the same as (0.44+0.47)/2.
2. Equip 1 x 1H... speed on character sheet is 0.53... swings in 30 seconds = 55 to 57 = average speed of 0.53.

So this statement is false:

Nope, this would mean that you would be better off just using the weapon with the best dps. As adding a second weapon (with lower dps) would lower your overall dps.
It seems there is a speed bonus for dual wield (0.44/0.47 vs. 0.53). The dps is always lower if you remove either of the 1H'ers.
It's even worse if you put the 1H in the Offhand and nothing in the Main because the Main can still do damage without a weapon, but only something like 50 dps on my lvl20. This 50 nevertheless gets taken into account for the average dps calculation as if it were dual wield and can actually cause the dps to be halved.

I did the 30 second swing test for various 2H'ers as well and the times on the character sheets were spot on every time.

No, that statement is not necessarily true. If the attack sequence is:

main hand, off hand, main hand, off hand, ...

Then the numbers could be:

damage 1, wait speed 1, damage 2, wait speed 2, damage 1, ...

This would give the same attack count you measured (2 attacks in 0.91 seconds, or about 66 attacks in 30 seconds), but would have a DPS formula of:

(damage1 + damage2)/(speed1 + speed2)

Going over my calculations again I see I did compare (avg.DPS1 + avg.DPS2)/2 to (avg.damage1 + avg.damage2)/(speed1 + speed2) and got a variance of 1 DPS which I dismissed as a rounding error.
The neglegible variance was actually due to the 2 speeds differing slightly (0.44 and 0.47).
If I halve the speed on one of the weapons, the 2 formulas give very different DPS.

I agree with Kiger that dual wield average DPS = (avg.damage1 + avg.damage2)/(speed1 + speed2).

(avg.DPS1 + avg.DPS2)/2 is only correct if speed1 = speed2.
