You can't use [] anymore in game (they were changed to {}, because of this very issue, long ago), so it looks like somebody's being creative with pipes (|) . BTW - the person doing this is the player one chat line above (who's name you've crossed out). Take a look at your unedited picture and report the idiot.

It's more than annoying, it's against the EULA. While it might seem like harmless fun, especially if the context isn't too severe, the reality is that it could cause irreparable harm to a player's reputation or cause adverse action to be taken against an innocent player if the false comments are bad enough.

Impersonating other players is bad, mmmkay?

I didn't think it was that big a deal, but, yes, I suppose it could get out of hand. It's a trend that has started in the pvp world.

Well its too late anyway, As of 10:51 10/6/08 pm Eastern KingofCarnage the lvl 100 Warrior
was officially deleted. It was by my doing. KoC is gone my new mage is lvl 34. To all my friends my in-game name is DeathsAccomplice and I usually hang out in world 7 and world 5.

That depends on how much damage to his reputation has already been done.

Another perspective is that he is choosing to cut any further risk of this copycat causing more damage to his reputation, before the damage becomes irrepairable.

Likewise... this is the sort of thing it would be really nice to see cracked down on before it gets any further out of hand.

The only way this type of thing gets resolved is if it gets reported. No report = no action. Most of the time, this type of impersonation is pretty tame, but sometimes it gets downright nasty, which is why it's not allowed at all.

How dumb can you be to believe this when it happens? Whoever believes this...I wouldn't care about what they thought of me, as I wouldn't need friends who are morons.

This issue isn't just about the gullibility of your friends or how thick your skin is, RMG. Frankly, it doesn't matter what you think, because this activity is prohibited by the EULA. If it wasn't so easy and effective, impersonators wouldn't do it. This is basically a form of social engineering accomplished by exploiting the existing chat system. It's pretty easy to see how players would be mislead into thinking somebody "said" something they didn't--especially if chat scrolls by quickly--unless they pay very close attention to the characters surrounding the name (| vs. [). If another player knows you well enough they may send you a tell asking what's up, but if they don't know you well they may just screen cap and report you for being offensive, blacklist you with their posse (tbd), etc...

It can be a pretty big deal. Imagine being suspended because there's a screen capped report of you 'saying' something racist/hateful - CS might completely miss the fact that there are pipes instead of brackets, just like players would, and you'd be screwed. It doesn't matter if CS was wrong, if they didn't adequately check the chat logs, if it's not "fair", or whatever. That's not the point. Most of these impersonations are just jokes, but some are maliciously designed to cause damage to a player's reputation, enjoyment of the game, ability to play the game, etc... That's wrong.

Also it's very unlikely that the average player will look twice at something just because it seems odd.
I did a triple-take when someone did it to me...
The trouble is that people used to do it with {} which are easier to see at a glance are fake, whereas pipes | are harder to see at a glance.
