How to ignore another forum poster
#47866 - 02/14/08 08:22 PM

Trolls thrive on being fed. Don't feed them, ignore them (unless their posts as so offensive that they need to be reported). Posters that feed trolls are nearly as bad as the trolls themselves, because they prolong and exacerbate the problem (I'm just as guilty of having done this as other posters are). Here are some simple instructions on how to ignore a fellow forum poster:

1) Make sure you're logged in. If you're not logged in, there's no way for you to ignore another poster (other than turning a blind eye to the other poster's posts).

2) Click an offending poster's name (to the left of his or her post):

Ignore 1

3) In the poster's profile, click "Ignore this user":

Ignore 2

4) Enjoy the silence! (/queue Depeche Mode)

Ignore 3

In the event that you feel a poster has violated the Message Board Rules and Guidelines , there is a handy little "Notify Moderator" button at the bottom of every posters message. Simply click this button to notify a forum moderator. It generates an email that is sent directly to the moderators. Please don't abuse this link, as it may result in actions against you. Personally, I have used this against posters who have been extremely offensive, against posters who shamelessly bump threads, against posters that are egregiously abusive and against character assassins.

Remember, there aren't any board rules against general idiocy, so just ignore the idiots and move on.

It's sad that Ripper had to post this, but I fear he is the wisest one of the bunch at this particular moment (and many others, don't get me wrong...). That being said, I feel that I must decist from further fanning of flames on already burning trolls, and further burying of their offspring (since we all know that dead troll-lings decompose quickly and actually sprout more through the spread of spores).

This has fastly become my favorite feature of this forum, however, it does not really solve the problem.

The solution to this problem is simple: ban the trolls.

Please help.

I like to stay on top of the forum comments and have previously used Active Topics to do so. However, recently, we get useless posts of one-lined sentences. What is the best sorting method to avoid these. Ignoring a user doesn't remove them from the sort. Any ideas.. as I only have so much time, and one user is making me waste a great deal of it.

Hi Everyone,

while ignoring someone does ahve a certain amount of satisfaction attached to it I ahve found that filing a complaint is a far better way to go. If someoen si delibertly breaking the rules and cpeople complain officially then the person stands a far better cahnce of being banned from the forums.

We ahve two now in the forums that are doing their best to get banned...shall we all help..sufficient complaints will accomplish that

I give my 110% for Ghad on this one, ignoring isnt the way, its stopping them. We indeed have 2 little spammers now, and Ill be happy when they're gone. One I already faced against the rules for the forums, which he was not keeping himself at, the other one will follow.

I want to say that I'm pretty sure which "one poster" you are talking about, so I'm not taking any offense at this post at all. I just wanted to say something about the whole "one-liner" and "useless post" thing in general. So this is NOT a stab...

Though I agree with you, Ghad, and LR about the spammers and actual "trolls," when discussing this "one line posting problem" that you feel is a problem - many of use post one line responses to things to make a joke and keep the overall tone of the forums as "light" as possible. Since many could not care less if it all just went off the deep end becames a snarling, nasty, flame-fest, the only way to combat this (I feel) is to have some sort of intellectual fun here interjected with all the seriousness.

I'm not sure what you're defining as "useless" posts to you(i.e. not giving the answer you wanted, or not posting what your opinion of content is, or etc.) however, I just like to have a chuckle or a smile, and help friends do the same, when going somewhere that they feel they have "friends" of some sort.

Now, I only post this because I am obviously guilty of one- liners that don't always have anything to do with the topic at hand. But they do have a purpose, and its not to up my post count or make myself feel as if I've interjected just for the sake of it, because I do also contribute very often.

I may be going off the edge a little bit if you weren't even thinking about the particular kind of poster that I am (and I guess that's why I got voted funniest poster) and I want to apologize if you weren't even hinting towards some of us that joke a lot.

I just wanted to be clear that I don't want the forums just to be some sort of serious, engineered "think tank" that is only to be used for the "serious" gaming concerns and issues of DR. I don't think the devs want that either. And as long as I don't break any rules, am not detracting from the overall goal of the forums, then I don't think that posting silly "one-liners" or "off-topic" posts are even close to being a problem. It's the people that just do it to get attention and purposefully annoy the others here to stir the proverbial pot.

Again - down with trolls and self-promoting spammers. Just don't group me with them please. (not directed at anyone in particular...) thanks. Cory

Carry on...

Does it matter whether or not you do it intentionally or not, when the fact is you are degrading the mood of the forums? Perhaps you should think of intentionally watching yourself so you would not post any more irritating messages, or messages that are not well thought out.

You know you just could ignore me like everyone else you know that? You should if I annoy you that much.
Also, why are you replying with the HYPOCRISY ALERTS and saying that I'm just trying to gain more posts when u r too? (by posting HYPOCRISY ALERTS). Now your suppose to reply that ur trying to make me stop.

In truth, you don't really annoy me that much. I must say that I am rather amused by your antics: which, obviously isn't very nice of me, since I know you are genuinely trying to help when you post incorrect advice and information, and your idiocy is mostly your attempts to be humourous. However, other aspects of you, such as your desire for attention (particularly the abuse of the XML Sheets), does indeed irritate me slightly.

My reason for not Ignoring you is because Ignoring will result in me losing track to most discussions that involves the Ignored. I'd rather have the full picture of things. Besides, you really aren't that big a troll: just slightly idiotic.

As for me, gaining posts... no, I am not trying to gain posts. Why would I? I certainly don't think post counts give respect, like many people evidently do. In fact, I think showing post counts is one of the most stupid things about forums: they should be hidden, because too many people set store by them and judge others using PCs, or try to horde them by spamming for this purpose.

I also noted you said "you're hording post counts too". You've as well as admitted you are hording post counts.

I am not trying to make you stop, because that is impossible. I suppose what I am doing will probably by what LegendRunner call "feeding the trolls", but really I don't mind... as I said, your antics amuse me, although I can assure you, I can make do without them. Really though, I try to be nice, but your consistent disruptive behaviour and attention seeking has really pushed it. However, if you really do see fit to change your ways, I'm quite really to drop the hostile tone.

PS: The "HYPOCRISY ALERT" part means that I acknowledge the fact that I myself often post irritating and not-well-thought-out messages, hence why I often heavily edit most my posts.

I'm in Ghad!

What do I need to do to file a complaint on the forums?

268 posts in 3 weeks!?!?! I would have less of a problem with it if the contributions were useful, entertaining or appeared to have some sort of thought put into them.

When your life is so empty that you feel the need to post..."anything" just to get a high count for a #$^&ing title; go stand on a high bridge and contemplate the view. Maybe, you'll have an epiphany and decide to contribute.

Maybe not.

If the later is the case, just jump because I, and probably a few others, have got absolutely no use for you.

Possibly not, but the majority of them are either incorrect information and advice, or idiotic. The first one can be solved by either making sure your information is relatively correct, or simply refrain from making advice. The second... well, just check your posts to make sure there aren't any incoherences or things that may sound (non-purposefully)distinctly stupid.

Necro - the real problem is:

Stupid people don't know that they are stupid. Even after being told by many people they are stupid, they don't believe it or do anything about it.

Having an illiterate moron proofread his writing is an exercise in futility. Also, the fact that he has no basis in actual knowledge means he will NEVER post anything worthwhile.

Actually, calling him a moron is an insult to morons.

I know it is not possible to cure stupidity... it's like insanity, they never believe they are suffering from the condition even if everyone in the world yells it at them. Instead, they feel misunderstood. The main reason I do it is... well, so people cannot say it is though lack of trying, so to speak.

Anger management worked for me....sorta...

It was probably more an effect of the little blue pills though, now that I think about it.

I have plenty to say (of course...) about my beliefs in the necessity of society-wide IQ and intellect screening, as well as pre-parent screening for people that want to have children...but this topic has gone way off course and I dont want to help it stay that way.

Sorry I wrote THAT much, but I'm having a bad day and the repurcussions have to end up somewhere besides a door in my house....

where are those damn pills?!

I was confusing stupidity and ignorance.

Ignorance can be cured with experience...
Stupidity can't be cured...

Right? You can't gain intellect... it's a function of birth.

Well, I don't think you can gain Intellect, but that's hard to determine, considering there isn't a truly viable way to measure or even define Intellect. But on the whole I agree: stupidity cannot be cured, though with willpower it can be controlled.

The problem is, stupid people often aren't intelligent enough to see the need to control their stupidity, because they do not have the intelligence to see that they are stupid. Kind of a degenerative loop, or whatever you call those things where they loop back into themselves in a perpetually negative cycle.

Its called a causality dilemma.

"Chicken and the egg" question.

"Time travel to sterilize your father, so how could you be born in order to grow up and do the time travelling"

etc. etc.

It's not a feedback loop, negative or positive.

Anyways I think we got our point across.
