XML feed questions
#45609 - 01/28/08 12:43 AM |
Is it deliberate that some of the icon names provided in the feed are mixed-case or all lowercase, when the corresponding icon file name is is all lowercase or mixed-case? I can see how that might be an encouragement for people to move the images to their own host, but otherwise it'd be nice if everything were consistent. e.g.: <Icon>butcher</Icon> <Icon>noxiousshot</Icon> The icon file names are actually "Butcher.png" and "NoxiousShot.png". <Icon>Weapon_Icon_crossbow_infantry</Icon> The icon is actually Weapon_Icon_Crossbow_Infantry.png Note there's not even a way to procedurally adjust the incorrect casing of the XML data, even if the files were consistently cased (but they aren't, as some are all lower-case and others are not). I'm moving the images to my own host and renaming them to all lower-case, and doing likewise with the icon names received in the XML, but it'd be nice if the icons and image filenames were just all lower case. Now, these two couldn't have been deliberate. They have spaces in the filenames rather than underscores: NCS_Brawn overlay.png weapon_icon_barbed sword.png My host won't even allow a filename like that, so if the XML correctly references those names, that'll actually be an obstacle to hosting the images myself. It's impossible to do a thorough test as no single character has all possible skills and items. We can only test for the icons referenced in whatever character XML we test with. So, three requests: One, put all the image filenames to lower case, and all the Icon names in the XML data likewise. Three, put underscores where the spaces are in those two filenames, and likewise for the XML reference to them. Two: Could we get a bogus character XML for God Almighty? A character with all the skills and all the equipment in the game? That'd reveal in 5 seconds where the icon names in the feed do not match the icon filenames. ![]() -------------------- Add MyDungeonRunner to your blog. |

Hey Jeff, This is a known bug, and is being fixed when XML Feed 2.0 is released. Its an oopsies because they came off some crazy host that isn't case sensitive (I believe it's name is whispered in dark corners as 'Windows'), not in a vain attempt to have people not hot-link. Actually, you can procedurally get the right file name, note my character viewer for an example. If you own the host you can even do it off of DR's servers since the misspellings happen in a few specific ways. If you're working in php, I can give you my function to 'guess' the correct name for an icon. So long as you host it yourself, this is quite simple. If you're using a different language, I'll still send ya my function so you can port it yourself *grin*. Hope this helps! |

Quote: To clarify what Snarky said, the icon names and their references in the XML are coming from the actual in-game data our designers and artists create; if they use different case in referring to the file and naming the file, Windows case-insensitivity masks the problem. For the upcoming patch, XML generation is being tweaked to provide all-lowercase icon references, and the icon set is going to be re-generated with all-lowercase names. http://boards.dungeonrunners.com/showflat.php?Number=42150&&fpart=8#Post44374 Quote: Hopefully you won't need to host the images yourself. That said, I'll look into fixing these (no promises for the upcoming heave, though). Quote: That shouldn't be necessary with the upcoming heave. Here are more details on what's coming in version 2 of the XML: http://boards.dungeonrunners.com/showflat.php?Number=42150&&fpart=8#Post44374 Around the time the heave hits PTS, I'll try to make some samples of the new XML available for everyone to examine and prepare for. |
