Character Sheet Viewer
#42150 - 12/22/07 11:07 PM

Hey there,
Long time player, first time poster (ok, not so long time player). I'm a gamer by nature, programmer by trade, and inevitably when I like a game I get caught up designing stuff for it as well. This happened once again with the nice XML they're now giving us for character's to view.

Without further ado for those who want to see it:
http://www.threeplanetssoftware.com/software/dr/

For those still reading this post, I'll point out this is the work of one day's hacking. Its by no means finished, and fairly rough around the edges. The front page is decidedly empty as well, I'll fix that soon with news. My eventual goal is to make this fairly close to the UI you see in the game, hence all the mouseover tooltips, and minimalist text.

For the other Devs out there, you'll notice I've fixed the icon bug, though we're still missing information on the items such as type of damage, and defense rating.

If you're STILL reading this, perhaps I can entice you to go over to the other site by pointing out the pretty URLs? Just add your character name after /software/dr/ and you'll get your character sheet, for instance:
http://www.threeplanetssoftware.com/software/dr/Segfault

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Any hate mail can be sent to [me via PM as I don't think email was supposed to be posted here], though fan mail is welcome as well.

I should hope not! For one that means they'll never get around to including more data in the XML for me to chew through (defense rating, weapon types, the in-game tooltip text on skills.... if a dev reads this, please give me a Christmas present with that info *grin*) and for two that would mean the death of one of the few MMO's I feel I can play casually!

More seriously (sometimes I live up to my name) I wasn't aware that DR was working on their own version... I figured they were just handing out XML for others to check out. I'm sure their version will be oh-so-much slicker. If I've learned one thing through my years of gaming, its to not annoy the admins, nor make them jealous. You get shrubbed, and hard. :P

"This kind of thing" is quite easy.

First off I'm giving the source out to "worthy" people, such as TheTownstons.com admin Legendrunner, who hopes to get it running on there. "Worthy" in this case is basically any who will respect Open Source, leave in the correct attribution and either pass the source along to their users, or direct those requests to me to handle. I do intend on upgrading my version in January when they upgrade the XML, so I'm trying to not let it get too widespread before that.

Secondly, only cool people code, so you're a cool person!

Third, here goes nothing:

This guide assumes some programming experience, and is in pseudo-code. If demand arises I'll do a better example in a real language, but for any coder out there, this should suffice.

First, we nab the XML feed. We'll store that as the variable $XML_FEED. My code uses wget to grab the web page, then simplexml to load the XML from it.

Next you need to display data from afore mentioned $XML_FEED. The easiest way it to display exactly what you want, though this is not the most robust example. But, for instance, lets just show the name, title, and stats (to try and figure out what states go to what titles). You'd want to display $XML_FEED->Name, $XML_FEED->Title, and then each of the children of $XML_FEED->Attributes.

At this point we need to note the structure of the $XML_FEED. $XML_FEED->Attributes has one child for each of Strength, Agility, Endurance, and Intellect. Each of those has two children, Innate and Effective. So to show all of it you'd have:

$XML_FEED->Attributes->[Strength|Agility|Endurance|Intellect]->Effective, since we only really care about what each is at right now.

That pseudo-code (if its even low enough to be called pseudo code instead of 'random gibberish') would give ya a page that displays someone's name, title, and the current status of each of their four stats. The reason I say this method is n't very good is it refuses change. If NCSoft puts in a fifth stat, Sexiness, you'll have to re-do your page (not by much, but you get the idea).

A more robust answer to the problem (and how I did it) is this:

Nab the $XML_FEED as before. Now we load everything into one giant array $XML_DATA. This should be recursive, and smart about naming. For instance mine would load the stats as:
$XML_DATA['attribute_strength_innate'] and so forth.

After you have it loaded, you work on displaying the data. Here you use regular expressions to grab just the specific values for each point. On my stat part, I grab everything that's attribute_([^_]*)_(.*), and then display each programatically.

Sure, you hard code certain things. I nab all of my attribute_ bits at once, the skills another place, etc. But this manner allows you to add/move certain sections around a lot easier, and small changes to the XML shouldn't break the overall page.

And that's about it. Like I said, if there's enough interest I'll do a more in-depth guide, but that should be a good starting place.

its actually alot easier if you just code a little PHP script to parse the XML, styled to show what you need.

I did a search to find a suitable place to post my question, so I may be a bit "off topic"... I began playing on 12/29/07, also the date I became a member. I tried the XML spread "Anson" posted in "Announcements", as well as this (very cool, jealous of coding skills) site. Both say that my character "does not exist. Is there a certain level or play time that needs to pass before one "exists"?

[My character name is the same as my forum, "Necromatrix".]

I felt so embarassed by how much better Snarky's viewer looked that I completely re-did mine:
Broken images are still there--I'm just going to wait for DR to patch their data since it would be a massive kludge to attempt to fix it in XSL. Either that or host the images locally and rename them to match the bad data....not worth it imho.

New features:
- a graphical character inventory showing equiped gear.
- combat stats all above the fold

nope the feed draws from DR info directly and isnt part of the DR program anyway - its however ppl program it, just uses the info from the game as data. It doesnt help you to make strategies against someone really, and if you were rlly worried about it, you could just put your gear in your inventory when you log, and take off your skills, lol. they would think you are a naked, monster chow lvl 100.

Just to be clear here, no one (that I've seen) is mining any of the data yet. These services just poll their service, and nothing is stored locally. In fact, due to how well the system is built (in terms of speed of updating) caching is fairly pointless, and will just run up the bandwidth when you update your data every 10 minutes.

If you really don't like this service, take advantage of how often its updated, and log out nekkid as the day you were born. Clear your skill bars, and not a whole lot of info can be gained, other than knowing where you put points.

After saying that.... thanks! I've got some changes coming to mine, and Demos really kicked his up a notch, and I know it always makes a developer feel good to know his code is appreciated. So, uh... now might be a good time to show some love to the DR devs as well, just saying!

Its sysadmin appreciation day today, have you grokked yours?

Demosthenez - I think you have something off with your new character viewer. I checked out my char and it showed his skills in the wrong slots. They all appear to be shifted over two spaces to the left and the ones on the left end have wrapped around to the right side. this aplies to all three of my characters. You can check them out below.

Ah, the problem - which I hadn't documented yet, I'm afraid - is that the skill associated with the left mouse button is given SlotID 106 and the skill associated with the right mouse button is SlotID 105. So ordering from 100 to 109 will slip your L/R mouse skills into the middle, instead of to each side. It goes back to the time before the classless system (before you could equip any passives you wanted) when the skill bar was smaller...

I mentioned this to Snarky at some point, but forgot to say it publicly here, for which I apologize.

I also noticed that t3 (lvl 102) items appear to be level "101".. which isnt correct for sure, does this affects all levels.. that a lvl 56 is instead a lvl 57?

Edit: Link I am very sure my ember gloves are t3, and so are my boots. and my wake is a t2 for sure, still appears as a lvl 100. Snarky's viewer doesnt have this problem, by the way.

what do u have to hide really. just what armour and stuff you have i find it very usefull when im in PvP to know your oppenent. its not like only certain people have the ability to use this everyone does just not everyone knows about it fully yet so the more people who find out about this and use it to their advantage they wont need to complain about it

There's a bug in the way the level of equipment is being reported, yes - the level currently showing up is slightly offset from the level you see in game. It looks like both Snarky and Demosthenez correct for this (look at the Level tag for your items in the raw XML - it is 5 levels higher), but in some cases Demosthenez corrects by 6 instead of 5.

The upcoming patch will see version 2 of the XML format, which will have the following fixes (at least):
- the defense rating of armor is included
- movement penalties on gear are included
- icon names in the XML will always match the provided icons
- the reported level of equipment should match what you see in game (no offset at all).

We're also talking about including the time played (what you get from /played).

Done and done...

And, uh, can't really think of anything real AJAXy to do. Unless it was loading each character without reloading the page... but is that really necessary?

Hmm... unless I hooked this up to a db... had a scrolling box to see who was being looked up... mayhaps showed basic stats...

Yea, is that REALLY necessary? *grin*

It seems that some items are not their proper level.
E.g. all my gear is lvl 100
The formula I was using was equipment level - quality (+ or -1 depending if rainbow). I'll try the -5 but there is still inconsistency where some level 100 rainbows are + or -1 xml levels of each other. I notice the same with some other items.
As a ref, all my stuff should be level 100.

Well, yes. This is because equipment really does go up to level 102, but level 100 players can equip it all (and it's displayed as being level 100). This is where the tiers of level 100 gear (tier 1, 2, and 3) came from. For instance, you could possibly find three "Sissirat's Brother's Cousin's Roommate's Staff of Something Really Awesome" all marked as level 100, and one could be slightly better than the one you have now, and one could be slightly worse.

nice work, i was hoping someone would develop one of these. Next, can you develop a damage tracking mod (like from wow)? That'd be nice, I have a hard time telling which setups do more dmg. on another note, check out my max dmg, 13160 ~

Alright, I've finally gotten around to doing some more work on the viewer. I've got a decent list of stuff I want to do, and tonight I got a fun one out. If you go check out the viewer, such as Segfault's (or LegendRunner's if you want to see lots of bonuses),
and scroll over some stats, you'll get a nice lil popup of which items contribute to the stat. Tomorrow I'll make it so clicking on the span also pops the info up into a div at the top, so you can copy/paste (that goes for the weapon tooltips as well).

I actually didn't realize ya couldn't do this from my version until I someone mentioned to me that only Demos' could... was a major face palm moment whereby I realized I went for looks... that killed functionality!

Anyways, that'll get polished up through this weekend, so let me know what you think!

After that I'll be putting in more table showing things such as movement speed, crit bonus, etc, so also post if there's a particular something I'm missing.

Currently doing:
Strength
Agility
Endurance
Intellect
Health
Mana
Resistance Bonus (+X TYPE Damage Resistance)
DPS Bonus (+X Damage per Second to TYPE Attacks)
Ranged/Melee DPS (+X TYPE Damage per Second)
Movement Speed
Damage Reflection (+X TYPE Damage Reflection)
Damage Bonus (+X% to all TYPE Damage)
Ranged/Melee Critical (+X% TYPE Critical Hit Chance)
Thanks!
