I don't get this "secret" PvP stuff
#43791 - 01/10/08 11:10 PM

I haven't PvPed in this game much at all. If you look at all my characters, I don't show a single PvP win. I have however PvPed in other MMOs. In fact, quite extensively.

I understand that PvP is a different meta game than PvE, it requires a different mind set and a fair amount of both skill (hand/eye) and game knowledge. Anyone who says otherwise haven't PvPed at a high level. It's not just mashing buttons.

With that said, I'm rather surprised with the PvP community in DR. And quite frankly, a little disappointed. There are a number of threads suggesting that the XML viewers allow someone to unfairly peek into someone's gear or skill set up; all this outcry that precious secrets are going to be revealed. Oh noes!!

Hoarding knowledge is inimical to a healthy PvP community. PvP requires a healthy amount of game knowledge to get in and do well. The barrier for entry can be quite steep. In every healthy PvP MMO I've ever been involved in, the PvP community goes out of their way to teach, instruct and reach out to those willing to give it a try. It's where the next generation of opponents and competitors come from. PvPers become respected as not only skilled combatants but also community builders.

Hoard the knowledge, and the PvP community becomes an afterthought. An inconsequential minority that the other players consider boorish, inconsiderate and unable to speak or write coherently without resorting to Internet l33t speak.

Another funny thing happens too when knowledge of PvP becomes more widespread. It begins to separate the really skilled from the folks that rely on gimmicks. It also fosters innovation. Last month's tactics don't work anymore and therefore players innovate and get better, really delving into the game to gain that edge. Such innovation *can* happen in isolation, but with wider knowledge, innovation is forced.

I see the PvP community in this game at somewhat of a crossroads. They can embrace innovation, the spread of knowledge and increased competition or they can continue to resist change and decry that their poor secrets are made available to the unwashed masses. I'll be curious to see what develops.

Cheers, F

Well said. One of the fun of PvP, IMO, is to learn other builds, think up a counter and apply it. Sharing PvP knowledge is good: I mean, if PvP is always the same with people running around with the same builds and the same tactics, what's the fun in that?

And all this fuss about the Character Viewer is stupid. It isn't like this is the only way to learn PvP skills: in fact, not being able to see how people actually use their build, I find it a stupid way to learn how to PvP. The easiest and best way, really, is to fight other people and see how they play.

Normally, learning of a successful build/gear combo = less innovation imo. Yes, people will then try to counter it but bottomline, when cat is out of bag it then becomes the standard...this happens even without the xml sheets but those sheets help that process occur at a much faster rate.

Having to learn and gear up on your own is part of the true pvp process.

The XML sheets barely speeds up the process, really; since one fight is worth hundreds of XML sheet look-ups. You're saying its a bad thing to share knowledge... that it actually inhibits innovation by making things standard? Well, in Human history, progress is made by the sharing of knowledge, not by isolating it.

I think the XML viewer is a good thing although I do see where the other people are coming from -being a privacy advocate myself- however it's easily fixed by simply putting your non-PvP (farming) gear on when you log out or when your not in a fight.

like wreker said, all the good pvpers have a whole inventory full of gear to swap out.

My mage has gear for all 3 and all the gear looks the same. Only thing that looks difference is my weapons when i switch to another build.

Bitburger also plays ranger/fighter/mage.... And changes before gate is down, so i cant really see this affecting him much.

I have to agree with the origonal poster on one important point. This pvp community is very different than anything I have encountered on a game before. Usually if someone kicks your [censored] at a pvp match, they are still human, and willing to chit chat with you, give you advice, or take you under their wing etc.

This game is totally different. I don't remember the exact name, but this ranger totally smoked me in pvp, so I sent him a /tell saying good job, and asked if he had any advice. He just kept replying with 'haha' and 'loser' over and over. He pretty much filled my entire chat window.

Then there are some very sore people. I ran into a different ranger who kept trying to stand inside of me and shoot me. Well I use pbaoe spells, so I kept beating him. When the match was over, he started harassing me, and using foul language, etc.

Then there are others who just ignore you when you ask them for help. (Wreker)

Seriously, you people who have this epeen mentality, who think you are sooo much better than everyone, or won't tell people your secerets, etc. I just don't get you.

Or even in /w when you ask for advice, people are just so rude.

Eventually you will run out of competition and people will steer away from the game. The only reason I still play it is because it is a fairly simple game so my 7 year old son can play it.

I think you are overrating the PvP community of other games. Almost every other game I've played with a PvP aspect have a much, much worse community than DR. In DR, 90% of PvPers are courteous and are always friendly regardless of the outcome of a battle. In a few other games I've played, 90% of PvPers call you "noob", "LOL noob" and its variations before the battle, during the battle, and after the battle. IMO, DR's PvP community is better than many.

I agree, for example I drew a lvl 6 mage the other day (under 10s are nerfed if you didnt know) after the match I /t 'd the player told them they really should get to lvl 10 before trying to pvp and even gave them a low level Sissirat's staff that I had.. I dont really see that happening in other games.

This is probably true. Unfortunately, the 10% stick out like a sore thumb. Posts like this doesn't exactly give off the best impression.

True. It's better than say WoW's, but poorer than say the system in Dark Age of Camelot or even City of Heroes. Heck in CoH, the PvP community is so paranoid of scaring new players and ostracizing everyone else, they go out of their way to be nice. At least the PvP folks that are on the forum boards are like that...I haven't been in game for a while so I can't tell what it's like there now.

Well, most of the sore losers and idiots in DR PvP are usually new to PvP anyway, so I don't see them ever again. No big loss, personally; if they feel obliged to insult my parents when they get skunked.

I think the problem stems from the DR main pvp "community" containing 40 people... half of which are younger than 18.

Crass, maybe? Sure. True? entirely.

Also, like Ive said in 2 other posts, and no matter what anyone else says to the contrary, unless there is some sort of pvp "tournament" occuring, then at any given time there are between 3 and 12 pvpers online in pwnston. Its sad we have so much angst over pvp in this game.

As per my DR new years resolution, I made a new toon just to pvp - leveled it to 15 before I started using it in pvp so as not to be as much of a "twink" and got good gear from farming. When I played (the 10-15 times that I did over two weeks) the people that I played with/against either never responded when I asked ?s , were nasty or sarcastic with their responses, or rubbed victories in my face and told me I should practice more in pve or with "friends" before I came back to pvp since I had obviously never pvped before.

I think dephyler is right, the pvp community here on DR is sverely lacking in decency and good sportmanship. And if what fseries said is true, about the 10% of the pvp community being the culprits, then that 10% plays more than the other 90% for sure. If those who play pvp know who this 10% is, then my suggestion to you would be to ostracize them for their bad conduct and personal "gaming" issues. Until then, I doubt I'll be pvping again or giving any credit to the "considerations and concerns" of the pvp community/part of the game.

I don't think you have a clear picture of the pvp community. I spend most of my time in DR on the pvp server and I'm married in my 20s and i team alot with others that are from 20 to 50 years of age. We play there because we bore of AI encounters and like to play against real thinking opponents. It seems that you get your impressions from a vocal part of this community and frankly you can find a similar vocal group on any server at any given time.
When i started to PVP i made several friends that helped me along, taught me to compete there and enjoy teaming.

Now to your point on secrets, Is it wrong to try to preserve your edge if you have one? To the experienced player we enjoy trying to counter whats happening and we quickly learn to recognize those things. We learned that skill. Thats what pvp is all about. You learn from every loss from and every win. That knowledge took time to gather. To cry about secrets is like those that complain that it takes to long to get to 100.

I think you'll find out that PvP will be better when general PvP knowledge is more widespread. Sure, there will always be secrets but in a healthy PvP environment, those secrets don't stay secret for long which forces skillful players to innovate and change. I think you'll find that constantly using the same tricks over and over again against inexperienced opponents is no more challenging than going against computer AI. For me, I don't enjoy constantly beating up on the less knowledgeable or the new...seriously, what's the point? What you're telling me is that since you got this kernel of knowledge that you're afraid to let it out of the bag for fear that you'll have to get a new kernel.

Heck, in other MMOs, I've given my opponents entire builds, strategies, hints, etc. It still doesn't mean that they could beat me. I was confident that I had other skills that they had not yet mastered. Eventually, some did get better but that meant that I recruited one more avid PvPer. I saw it as a win-win all the way around.

my point is gain the skills to learn the tricks yourself. learn what someone does and figure a counter. don't be lazy. put effort into your own game. good players will counter anything you try and your no better off having known a trick someone gave you. Its like buying a new game and immediately running to a website to get hints without playing. Whats the point? Your not entitled to free knowledge. And for the most part if your part of the community you wont be denied help. just put an effort first.

My position is neither lazy nor am I advocating that all PvPers give everything up for the "good of the community". This isn't about a free lunch rather it's about that more information = stronger community. Clearly, you understand the difference between those positions, right?

It seems however that most people's impression of DR's PvP community is not that of a group that helps others. Just read the responses to this thread. And this isn't directed at you or the few other helpful folks that frequent the boards here. I have no idea who you are or your conduct in game. I will take at face value that you are a helpful player that will help out a newbie in PvP if they ask.

On the "entitlement to free knowledge" point...

Everyone is entitled to "free" knowledge, at any point. That's why they make player's guides and make millions of dollars doing so - there's one for this game in fact that you can download. My brother picks a game off the shelf, turns around to the spinning rack at the appropriate store and picks the matching strategy/players guide off the rack to buy with it.

People just want to know how to/ where to/ what to/ and the best way to/ anything in a game that they're playing. Most people like to win, or would at least like an idea of how to start helping themselves learn how, better. The only reason I ask people anything is if I really don't have any prior knowledge or the best way to go about following the right track so I dont waste my time.

PvP isnt this "secret" skill that you need to learn, anymore than playing PvE, and people ask questions there a LOT - and I usually do my best to help them out so they enjoy themselves and can become a good player. When that happens we're all rewarded in a way. In general anyway, each class has 2 basic ways to pvp - its not anything special that can't be figured out necessarily, just the way in which the information/suggestions are prompted.

I can only guess as to why someone of the "upstanding" pvp community hasn't made a "PvPer's guide" to post on the forums here, since there has been an influx of (uhh...how to say this nicely) mediocre "noob", "build" and "look at how I play" guides.

I agree. Builds are easy to work out yourself through experimentation. There is only a few viable builds, so generally people who strive to develop their build will arrive at more or less the same points.

I think the XML viewers are great, but it would be nice if players had an option to remain anonymous if they so desired. I fully understand why PvP and PvErs alike would want to maintain some autonomy from the general community. If someone elects to share select information that is on them, but no one is entitled to the information.

I know level 100s that don't game basics or how to play their class because they never put in any effort. Whether it is begging to be power leveled, copying strats and/or builds it all comes down to sheer laziness. Players need to go (l)earn something and not constantly look for shortcuts to give themselves an unearned advantage.

I am so split on this whole discussion. I can understand the whole privacy angle, but at the same time it's not like the viewer is showing our credit card numbers. While it is a point of privacy somewhat, in the grand scheme of things, it's simply a way to check out what other people are wearing when the save happens to happen. Which we all now know is not constantly occuring.

I really don't think it has any relevance towards PvP at all. It's simply another obstacle to work around and improve the game. I would think of it as just another challenge, if you in fact should choose to take PvP that seriously that even the idea of someone possibly (because just because they can look, doesn't mean they will) looking at your last saved set up is so troubling, perhaps you should sit back and not take it all so seriously. Because you aren't really enjoying the game, you are worrying about what everyone else is doing instead. PvP isn't all just one set up (build) or one set of skills and that constantly changes while in a match. Ones ability in doing that is what makes or breaks you, not whether someone is wearing the same stuff as you. Besides just because someone may use the same things you do doesn't mean that they will be better or worse than you at it.

In the long run I think whether or not there is a way to shut this feature on or off should be decided on the basis of it's long term effects (whether it hampers or helps) on the game itself. Personally, I think like with other changes the game has gone through, people learn to adapt or move on to something else. It's truly not something to stress over so completely.

One last thing, if one is going to complain about how much of a pain it is to use a mouse and click to take gear on or off for the purpose of a save, then one should not complain about the laziness of others who look at or even decide to duplicate your PvP build. They do say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery after all.

The problem is that you get people who are fairly new to the game, they get to lvl 20ish, have all 'ok' gear. A few purples, some yellows, maybe a rainbo (if they are lucky). They go out to pvp and get faced up with LuvHurts, Rainger, BrokenArrow, etc who are twinks, have almost all rainbo gear the same level as they are, and have no mercy.

Or they get the 'uber' archers who all they do is kite and cast fear shot.

So they try over and over, rangers and mages run, if they get them low, people go hide to get back to full health, the overall experience just seems unfair.

Then you have those like Falkow, who are between 93-99 and have like 500k hitpoints.

Finally after several times of getting 'skunked' they ask people who seemed good such as Wreker, and they ignore them, are 'buisy', or are just short and curt and just say something like, 'level up more' or 'I am lvl 100, you can't beat me' etc.

So they will either give up on PvP, find the most cheapest [censored] way to beat people, or leave the game.

I understand that the twinks worked hard to get their gear. Trust me, I would do the same if I knew how, but the point is, don't be a jackass just because you know something that other people don't.

...and have no mercy.

Please get your terms correct. Anyone over level 10 are not Twinks, but rather are striving to be Pure.

I'm not sure what you mean by having no mercy, so perhaps you can explain yourself.

Maybe you mean that we remain silent when we're called names, like Twink, Cheet, Jackass, and others much worse. If someone is in world chat and talking down to others or talking smack, I deem them as not needing any help. If I've been insulted by someone, why should I do anything for them? (Treat others as you would like to be treated.)

Is it no mercy when my opponent asks me in the match to let them win, and I say no? People ask to group with me all the time. Is it no mercy when I say no? Newcomers ask for free equipment from me. Is it no mercy when I don't help them like that? Others want me to help them farm. I've tried that, felt used, and won't do that again with someone I just met. Is that what you mean by no mercy?

Help can come from many places. Interestingly, I've noticed that it's the low levs that are often the most willing to share usable information when asked. (There are exceptions to this, of course, and to prevent those people from being spammed while playing, I'm not posting their names.) Personally, I have gone out of my way to help many that are new to the pvp game, and provided much advice, even if it was in the middle of a match.

in a direct responce to raingers post i know that she will go out of her way to help people who are not quiet as good at pvp or PvE as others. I my self being one of those who people who rainger has helped.

and calling somebody a twink is a bad excuse for losing. let me explain the diference between twink and pure.

Twink :

an character easily created with the minimal amount of time put into it and still winning games. possible mostly purples with a few yellows could be an example.

pure:

a character with alot of time and effort put into it with time taken to find the correct gear needed to win games. For example mostly RB outit with the rest atleast purples the correct level and giving the correct bonuses.

So for those who get angry at twinks im sure theres several post on the forums explainin how "twinks" at at no more an advantage than anyone else in pvp.

And people who go into PvP on matter what level with no experience can not melrey expect to win there 1st game.

the new twinks are lvl 10s. There is balance issue and still needs to be fixed. Any lvl 10 could gather up some KCs get gear for their character and be very strong in pvp. This takes very little time to do and anyone can do it if they have a semi higher lvl character.

And if those 10s look hard enough on server 1 i am sure they could get their paws on some rbws too.

Twink in my book means, someone who takes their high lvl and outfits a low level with all the best gear they can find, thust giving them an unfair advantage against others of that same lower level.

Wiki:

"A Twink is somebody who, within the confines and restrictions that a game provides, finds and takes advantage of a balancing flaw (whether it be in statistic, social features, skills etc.) to make a character that will be more powerful than a character made by one unaware of such flaws. A character made in this fashion is considered twinked."

"In computer role-playing games and MMORPGs, twinking refers to outfitting a new character or player with items or other resources that are not normally available to new or low-level characters. A twink in this usage is a type of powergamer and munchkin. The term can also refer to the twinked character itself (e.g., "My twink has all the best gear.") In its most basic definition, a twink is a character with better gear than they could have easily gotten on their own."

Call it what you want, call yourselves good. We all know what you are. The only person you are fooling is yourselves.

You are not good at pvp, you are only good at playing unfair. You are good at getting rainbo and purple gear. If you get a new character to lvl 12 and level him the same way as any other person could, you would get your [censored] handed to you in a match. Why don't you just go play a lvl 93-99? I am sure they are just as good of a player as you are...

This is why you do what you do.

Wow wow wow Dephyler, not so quick.
You think its a crime, and you think its a bug, but its obviously not.
In afct its getting gear at the same level you are yourself, so what a level 10 does getting lvl 10 rainbows, does a level 100 too because they cant level anymore. Why everyone has a problem against it? There are NO given advantages, its just that they got gear of the same level as they are themselves. Whenever its a level 10 char, a level 64 or a level 100, or anything in between. All and the same.

Twinked? No. Smart? Yes.

Well not to start a fight or anything, but the reason everyone plays lvl 10s-12s is cause there is a balance issue. And for the record if you played your 45 against your lvl 10, your 45 would lose.

One that isnt made up out of a fact, as within that area there is no evidence that theres still a bug.

A level 45 with level 45 gear, and a lvl 10 with all level 10 gear are TOTALLY equal. People that say that level 10 got unfair advantages are incorrectly informed or just try to make an excuse, either of the 2.

The fact is that people get beat by a level 10 and then say its a bug is that that people dont got their gear at the same level, and even if they have that not all gear, and if they got all that gear got no skill or tactics.

I get mad of the excuses being made all around the forum these 3 days, and if you people feel like level 10's got an unfair advantage, then report it as a bug and see the response of a dev for yourself.

We know that those under lev 10 got nerfed; what does it say about those new players when I bring my lev 5 into the arena and still beat them.. To me, that says that they have come into pvp ill prepared. It amazes me that a player comes into pvp and expects to win, even though their equipment is 5,10, or more levels beneath them. I saw one player last night that was wearing rainbows that were over 20 levels lower than his level!

LegendRunner im so glad that you are here.

To hear someone that is respected in both PvE and PvP defeding twinks when he him self isnt one people actually listen to him but when me and rainger and well i dont see anyother twinks around the forums but i still feel we are un listend to and most of the time when im helping people out in PvP i normally get clamm or jaysherman saying shut up u twink ur opinion doesnt count. LMFAO not that is bothers me personally its just the fact they are sore losers and for who ever said my 45 would lose i did a test and where my m8 used my 45 i used RR then we switched after both using each account it was a draw and which ever account i was in control of at the time won. PvP does take some skill "twinking" has been called a tactic like anyother i my sel do not agree with this but in the same sense why are kiting mages not being flamed or enduring warriors?

IF YOU GOT A PROBLEM GO MAKE A LVL 10 AND COME KICK MY [censored] ON IT THEN TELL ME IM A TWINK. BUT AS MY ACCOUNT HAS TAKEN WORK I THINK THAT UNLESS IM WAITING FOR ABOUT A MONTH UR NOT GOING TO BEAT ME.

IM NOT BEING BIG HEADED ALTHOUGH IT MAY SOUND IT AS THERE ARE PEOPL OUT THERE THAT I KNOW BEAT ME IM PROVING MY POINT THAT AN ACCOUNT LIKE THIS TAKES TIME...

ill see you in pvp haters...

The reason why I am so against the way people think and judge about twinks (pures) is that they dont even know what they talk about, they dont know how the whole system works, and if you ask them, they dont know how exactly Pures like you can be so good. The only response you get is:"Because you are twinked" or "Because you exploit a bug" and both are nonsense

I defend people not for the people themselves, but for the reason behind it. I would even defend my worst enemys when I still agree with them, not because of them but because of the opinion.
And ehh Ranged.. can you stop playing Captain Capslock.. it doesnt helps much I think.

Legendrunner I might be dreaming but i seen you farming lvl 10-15 rbws. If there is no balance issue then explain to me why ALL those people who have higher characters choose to play lvl 10-12s. None of them have 100s except Lov. Case closed.

Is your identity C---m? BWAH You sound just like her!

Interestingly enough, that individual has a lev 100 and farms for her lev 30 with a full group of mules, exactly the way others seem to think that those low lev 'twinks' do. Since you're so close to that individual, as mentioned in other posts, please tell us what the advantage is of that.

For myself, I don't care to pve. I find it boring. I would rather compete against someone else, as the most creative tactics sometimes emerge. (It's taken me 3 weeks to figure out how to counter one tactic that a player put into action.. and now I'll have a slim chance against it.)

So why should I put in a month of time not enjoying myself getting to lev 100 and another month not enjoying myself getting equipment? The only way to compete with lev 100s (who have the best skills, bonuses, and buffs), is play some of their game: having all of their equipment in the same level or level range.

Oh the fuss....PvP is just for fun people...no need for names and insults. If someone uses a "Bug" or an "Exploit", it just feels all the better when you whomp them in PvP. Have fun in PvP, send me a tell and we can team sometime.
