Righteous Stomp, why?
#25517 - 06/23/07 02:16 PM

For all us fighters out there, why should we use this? It doesn't do much damage. There is also no strategical value for a fighter to knockback all the enemies at once. It just doesn't make sense. A lvl 5 righteous stomp does 34 to 78 with a mana cost of 56. Thats not enough to even wound fodder npcs. It's just not worth the hotkey slot.

We can easily grab Gaseous Blast from the ranger trainer. As such we gain an AoE that does 395 to 730 damage with a mana cost of 53. I just don't understand why this ability is here. Gaseous blast we get to keep our enemies next to us. Deal them a lot more damage to them. On top of the fact that Gaseous blast has a faster recharge timer which makes it far more effective in combat.

So my question to all my fellow fighters is there any reason to use this skill anymore? It just doesn't make sense to me.

If you have no need to kick everyone away from you for a few seconds...

Personally I found it very handy for my fighter. It gave him a chance to regen a little health while the mobs recovered.

You don't regen in that short of a time, especially if there are archers/magic users. If the mobs were stunned for longer than 2 seconds maybe it would be useful. Or maybe if it added a divine effect that lower their movement speed by 20% for 5 seconds even. I dunno, it just doesn't seem useful at all. I generally like the fighter skills, but this one just seems completely replacable.

One area i find it comes in handy is Hdol, when you have dual healers and they keep healing eachother i use it to seperate them.

Well i'm not saying knockdown isn't useful. Just Righteous stomp. You could easily use Holy Roller or Butcher. Which do significantly more damage. Although thats probably the best use of righteous stomp there is though.

I dunno, I use gaseous blast, followed by ring of fire, followed by righteous stomp. Maybe it has something to do with my level compared to the dungeons I'm in (I'm higher than recommended) but this formula seems to kill a lot of easier pest adds in battles.

Well, in my opinion, this is what they should do. Put it to do knockback as of today, but with a CHANCE (maybe 20%) of knockdown. That way, it would be a bit useful.

I just feel this skill COULD be more useful and wanted to see what others thought about it. I mean we have 10 skill slots total, including the L,R. But is this skill really hotbar worthy? I don't think so. With so many fighter abilities that are better and if we choose to hybrid and use things like gaseous blast and ring of fire, we no longer need this skill. If it had some other effect to it, I could accept the small damage. But when we have other knockdowns that do far more damage, why bother? Maybe even if the stomp could generate aggro to help fighters keep it I would be willing to use it. Just wanted to get some debate going on it. Glad we got a lot of feedback.

Hey all...

I'm a brand new player (only level 8) and just signed up over the weekend to be a member. Anyhow I was running around with a ranger who was using Gaseous Blast.

My understanding is that G.B is a DoT correct? Anyhow the ranger character would hit gaseous blast and I would smack Righteous Stomp immediatly after. My thoughts on it were that it let the DoT do it's work while the monsters had to regroup and come back after us.

i'd also say that it has more uses for a ranger or other ranged damage build than for fighters.

its not totally useless, but for me its also not worth using a spot on the quickbar for it, there are better and more important skills out there.

Exactly right. It's really only worth it for a ranged build. But why as a fighter do I need to send everyone away from me, just to run after them and hit them? There are only a couple situations that this is really useful for a fighter. It's definately not a hotbar worthy skill for a fighter build.

It would be so much better if it did knockdown instead of knockback. That way the enemies would stay where they are just get knocked on their butts which prevents them from attacking.

I agree with that, I took Righteous Stomp off my skill bar because I was a tad tired of chasing down the baddies :/ (when they don't run on their own at least - bloody ranged mobs ). The way the skill is now it is much better for ranged base builds - Ranger or Mage [or hybrids focusing on range].

I agree that for higher level fighters stomp would be practically useless, but for lower levels, like me, who haven't even got enough skills to fill the hot bar, it does have its uses, however minor.
For instance, if im being attacked by a reasonably large mob, i need to focus my attacks on one enemy at a time, to eliminate damage done to me the fastest. If there are alot of them surrounding me, it can be hard to target the one i want, using stomp spreads them out and allows me to get a bead on the little bugger im trying to kill.
Its not a life saving, "[censored] look at all that damage!" skill, but it can help.

But since it's only knockback, and not knockdown, you get what? Like 0.9 seconds breating time and then a cooldown of, dunno, 15 seconds?

They should swap places on acidic blast and righteous stomp. Give acidic to fighter trainer, and stomp to ranger trainer. But then again, it's a classless system today. The 'class' trainers are just a remnant from the past.

I agree. As it is, its not worth it. It should either do a lot more damage, or knock enemies away a bit further and slow their movement by 60% for the next few seconds.

This will buy your party more breathing room.

How I use it, and I think this is rather clever... I righteous stomp, while everything is recovering I use toxic talent and all the fodder come back to me in one large group if they arent ranged and then I use gaseous blast. Have you ever seen 30 mobs taking damage? THE NUMBERS MAN! THE NUMBERS!!!!!!!!

Try pulling 4-5 groups and doing this. It is insane when your entire screen is white with numbers from the 100+ mobs taking damage at once.

In the hands of a fighter, the stomp is an escape move. use it to clear enemies away and then run to regenerate or pot. At least as a non-member, it's great to use when I need to run and regen thanks to low pot count.

stomp is great for me as i use it to get out of the middle of a mob. heres a breakdown of a basic fight for me:

H. roller(R), butcher(L), gas blast, cleave, stomp, repeat

i have the 2 warrior passives and 1h or 2h swivel action (depending on weapon) and retribution as my buffs.

everything is usually dead when im done and only will have to chase a couple of things down.

I'm puzzled as to why this hasnt been mentioned before, perhaps i missed it in the replies.. but what about teamplay value? This skill is immensely useful for doing goto > mage character and bam, area clear, they can take safe cover, especially if you're in town and your friend suddenly starts to take a lot of damage. Oftentimes monsters will aggro others based only on proximity. With stomp I can run towards a teammate and hit stomp, then take a few steps back to position myself between the monsters and my buddy.

This skill helps me very little solo, which is what you all are getting at, but in a group this skill is a lifesaver for others who get swarmed. Not to mention that using stomp scatters everyone allowing me to immediately follow it up with aoe shouts and the like. The result is my teammate gets out of trouble and I've got a horde of cursed monsters surrounding me instead. Also, don't forget this skill can be treated as a stun effect.

I will say though, that investing any more ranks into it is most likely a waste.

yeah I've been playing around w/ Righteous Stomp and I agree that it is underpowered even after training several levels of it. Does the damage ever grow to appreciable levels? When I'm in groups w/ my friends they don't like it because they cast a lot of AOE spells and spreading all of the enemies out screws it up a bit.

I still find the spell useful occasionally but in terms of practicality I will probably move on to better more hard hitting things.

I use RS in three main ways: Slam everyone I can into a wall or corner so AOE is more effective, to get mobs off of a mage or ranger, or to loosen up the mob so I can retarget.

Stomp is good when you are way to overwhelmed and your parteners are not being attacked (only you). You can lay off some mobs and balance the situation a lil' bit. I personally stopped using it at lvls 30-35 cuz I rather more AOE skills to pawn faster instead of run away from the enemies. But well, my stratergy works for me! maybe if you find a nice strat for RS then maybe youw wanna share it with us so we can use it too

Using RS solo:
Obviously, a move for keeping swarms off you that does almost no damage. But, if your fighting a party that has someone like a boss or mage, or someones doing too much damage to you, use RS, then charge the boss/mage and attack unhindered for a few seconds.
And it is useful for healing if you use potions. Potions can heal you even while your being damaged, even better if you can RS them before using it.

Using RS in Group:
A god-send for your pal. When hes being swarmed, run up an RS em' away. He can hopefully retreat and position himself better, and they should be focused on you.

I find Stomp useful for negating those mobs that stun for their initial attack. As they get close, triger stomp, and they lose the stun.

i think the biggest problem with RS is that Divine Ascendancy does NOT affect it. isnt it supposed to add to all divine attack damage? WTH is righteous stomp if not a divine attack? and for that matter, why do the items that add divine damage to divine attacks (not weapon attacks) not add to it? i understand that pure fighters are not supposed to be AoE monsters, but it would be more useful. and given the way these abilities are worded, it sounds like it's SUPPOSED to work that way)

I think I can give a good reason why it Divine Ascendancy does not add to it. Notice that DA adds +divine damage per second. Now if you were at my level, you would add 190 divine damage per second. The way the game calculates things, this would add 2850 divine damage to Righteous Stomp. See, RS recharges over 15 seconds, that means DA would need to add 15 seconds worth of damage right up from. 190 * 15 = 2850. Anyone that does the math can see how that would make Stomp a tad bit too much. Yes it takes 15 seconds to recharge...but that means over the 60 seconds of DA you could obliterate 4 groups....stomp one, run to the next, group them up, stomp them, repeat. Now add insult to injury by adding all the other divine bonuses.

that's its use NOW. however, since it has a damage component, it should do enough damage to bother with. i would REALLY like to be a paladin. however, given the stuff i actually USE, i cant be. they should either make it so the damage is useful OR remove the damage component, but (slightly) enhance the stun. (say increase either the chance of stun, or it's duration by 2 seconde). i'd prefer enhance the damage (so i can drop cleave). if they made it so DA affected it (using the one second idea above) then it would be useful, but still do much less damage than poison cloud or RoF. (since those ARE meant to be AoE king skills).

either would work.

at the moment, it appears DA still doesnt affect it, but mental prowess does. (unless im missing something. damage went from 69 cap to 117 which fits the MP tooltip, and activating DA doesnt change that).

Pretty worthless skill for a fighter. Since PvP has been added to the game the only good use for this skill is by mages and rangers in that it helps them kill fighters by knocking us around and away from them.

Pretty annoying that a supposed 'fighter skill' does this for them while if I was to use it on them myself I would just be doing them a favor ><

I think its prollably most usefull to a mage, as a mage i can feel free to level it up and use it as damage while its main prupose is knock back after ring of fire and gaseuos blast which by the way does up to 3k dmg on a 37 mage =D

its comes in handy quit a bit to get a mage out of a sticky situation.

as a side note holy roller is awsome on a mage, intlegence affects this as well making it a nice little 1.6k hit that allows you to move in fast/ aoe stomp and run/ rinse repeat.

I've found Righteous Stomp to be completely worthless. Its damage is laughable and a majority of mobs (and all bosses) will completely resist it at higher levels. I took it off my hot-key bar at level 50 when i realized " Hey, Righteous Stomp sucks and I haven't used it in 30 levels!"

I replaced it with Awesome Cleavage and i've never been happier. Now i welcome the swarming mobs. All the more to hit with Cleave/Awesome Cleavage combo.

The best use I've found so far for Righteous Stomp has been while killing Widow Maker. I want to Acidic Blast her to keep her Defense down but it seems that the swarms always take the Blast instead of her. So I RS, send her minions flying and hit Acidic Blast while she's one of the closest targets, guaranteeing she gets it.

A very situtational use but it's been helpful. I suppose I could have done it on Algor as well but I didn't think of it until Widow Maker (and haven't fought a boss past her).
