Fast dual wield or slow 2H? Numbers Stephen, pls!!
#19708 - 04/15/07 02:34 PM

I can't figure this out for the life of me. I'm a lvl 33 fighter. When I have dual wield my max damage is about 1000 now and both weapons are very fast. I was told last night that 2H weapons are MUCH better. Someone was giving me numbers in world chat but I thought it would be better here. I do enjoy number crunching in MMO's. I feel it's a fun part of the game (for me).

There are a few things I need.
*What are the speeds of the weapons (swings per second)
*Percentages of misses and hits (depending on color and lvl of critter)based on agility numbers.
*Percent of crits
*DPS (weapon and actual)
*What does agility really do? 1 agi = how much more accuracy (%)
*How does Strength effect (or is it affect) damage in DPS

We can speculate for the next year, but unless we can get some numbers (hint hint nudge nudge) there's not much we can do.

Stephen, I'm not sure about others, but I positive I'm not the only one out there that likes this type of stuff. It adds a whole other facet to the game other then the "normal" things. I also think if we're given this info it would prevent others from trying to make add-ons that do it.

Love the game,

I, and other long-time players, tend to get irritated over posts like yours because we've seen seem them all before. In general, I'd recommend you do a search before you post, but a search on DPS would turn up nothing because the search engine requires 4 or more characters upon which to search.

Here are links to threads in which this has been discussed post beta board-wipe:

DPS Dummy

DPS Stats

DPS Rating on Character Sheet

Weapon speed and str numbers

The developers haven't replied to any of the above links. I believe I read (pre board wipe) in one of Stephen's posts that he doesn't want the exact DPS calculations of the weapons known. I personally don't want them as I feel that the exact calculations aren't in keeping with the humor, irreverence and theme of the game. I like Hazelwood's idea specifically because it does fit the theme of the game. Also, I've posted in the suggestions forum an idea for an alternative to DPS counters:

Combat Counters

I personally don't want the damage calculations to be known, all this will do is result in cookie cutter setups and people farming until they get the equipment needed to get these "ideal" setups.

I prefer having to use my intelligence, perception and charisma to determine a good setup. Ever since I have played this game I have been told that 2H is better than 1H. Yet I only use 1H weapons. Cause I feel I get on better with 1H weapons. I cant give you figures, but anytime I have teamed with someone their comments (after "my eyes, my eyes are bleeding") seem to indicate that they are impressed by my damage output and tanking ability.

So, no, don't publish the damage calculations, keep them sekret and let idiots like myself just potter around in ignorance.

Ignorance is bliss I guess. Since there are no numbers out I think I'll go barehanded and play my fighter like a Monk. Sound rediculous? Well using anything other than a 2h warhammer is pretty much the same thing only to a lesser extent.

Some people want to know the DPS they deal.
Some people don't.

The best compromise would be a combat log or something that can be turned on by those who care to know.

In practice they appear to be about the same. A big 2H is better for things like cleave and the fast 1H is better for the knockdown skill.

While I would agree that 'best' type of weapon is both subjective and situational, I find this comment of yours interesting:

I agree with the cleave comment as you will get better damage out of it, but what do you mean regarding the 1H and knockdown? It's not like the cooldown duration for butcher is shortened because you're using a faster weapon...

I think it is. It has weapon based cooldown, so a quicker weapon will cause the skill to recharge faster than a slow one. Rank 1 Butcher and a Ludicrous weapon has a 3 second cooldown, but that jumps up to 9.4 seconds with a Grandma.

From the 0.49 patch notes:

Quote:

A new cool down mechanic has been added to the game. This mechanic is called "Weapon Based Cool Down" and has been applied to several skills that depend on your wielded weapon for their damage. The cool down for such skills is based on the speed of the weapon wielded. Slower weapons will increase the cool down and faster weapons will decrease the cool down. Skills affected are: Butcher, Cleave, Fear Shot, Poison Shot, Noxious Shot, Fear of Gosh and Soul Rend.

We're currently in the process of reworking the character sheet... It seems highly likely that a new "Nerd" tab will be added to that screen that will provide all kinds of interesting numbers for those inclined...

Oh, and an attribute respec system is being added to the character sheet also.

Will the attribute respec feature be free and infinite?

It will cost you gold, based on your level, to respec your attributes. You will be given about 15 minutes of playtime to spend your attributes and make adjustments (i.e. adding and subtracting from your attributes). Once the 15 minutes is up, you can only add unspent points and must pay again to get them all back.

I'm not sure what you mean by "infinite"

I meant a system like this one where you can respec attributes if you have xp, cash etc.

Thanks for the answer.

Will there be some way of seeing how much we've actually spent on each attribute, without having to take off all our gear and look?

Hi guys, noob here, guess we all like to play with this issue when we are new to the game, from what ive seen,(could be wrong)

Skills that involve hitting a foe - how many can be chained quickly with fast Vs slow weapons before first skill used is available again? A fast weapon lets you chain striking skills at a faster rate, though mana costs and lack of these skills makes it a moot point. with a striking skill you have to wait for last swing to finish before using it.

The bigger the numbers, the more effective % based skills are, so these skills are biased, even speed buffs produce significantly bigger increases on slow weapons.
The addition of weapon buffs would give a couple of skills that are biased towards faster weapons.
eg. add X damage to weapon stikes for 3 seconds, cooldown 5 would give minor damage to a slow wep but many more hits with a fast wep, slow wep users would still prefer one of the current skills.

I think all 3 setups work well if you pick the right weapons! if you use your noggin you should be able to work out what to dual wield and what to use with a shield, I think people have been testing dual wield with the wrong weapons.
The only issue I see here is with skills that are biased towards heavy weps.

Why use fast weapons currently?
much easier time chasing down fleeing attackers.
much faster killing of minor mobs that may only need a tap.
