Beta status?
#16297 - 02/27/07 07:18 PM

There have been a slew of newbies in the game (welcome! btw) who insist that their email invitations say 'beta'. What's going on? Are they getting legitimate beta invitationss, is this a mistake or are they pranking us. Some seemed quite irate when us older beta players insisted that they were wrong, because the game "isn't in beta".

Would one of you newbies please post the content of the invitation here (minus personal info)?

It is still in beta. The NDA is down. Membership payment is up/active. But it is still not a released product.

Stephen told us, pre-wipe, that the game has been out of beta since December. Since he's the lead dev, he makes the rules.

Regardless of peoples opinions on whether the game 'should' be out of beta or is 'complete', I'm just looking for a straight answer. Hopefully, from a red name or from a newbie posting their 'beta' invitation text from the last few days.

well the software itself says -final-

much like the current version of eq/wow/swg etc is -final-

but most online games continue to grow and evolve

so i would say the game version is final current
-but still in limited release

just a guess

I looked at my invitation again. It doesn't mention beta anywhere. I guess I just assumed it was still in beta because it doesn't seem finished really, and it's not really open to the public. So... is it in Gamma?

The game's not in beta. I'd be shocked and horrified if anyone was getting "beta" invites.

The game is still by invite or referral only. It will remain that way for a few months still. We'll open it up when the time's right.

Why is it limited to referrals and invites only? So that we can control growth and validate our free / pay business model. This is new territory for us and we're being careful.

Thanks for the verification, Steve. That was my reaction when, in world chat, new players argued vehemently that their invitation specifically said 'beta'. I'd love for one of them to post it, if it were true.

Well, this is what I received on the 21st

Quote:

WELCOME TO THE DUNGEON!

Greetings,

We would like to take this opportunity to officially invite you into the Dungeon Runners(TM) Community!

Should you accept this invitation, you will be among many exclusive individuals from the online community to experience this new game! You were chosen to participate because of your keen interest in Dungeon Runners and we are thrilled to offer you the opportunity to play at this time.

Nothing about beta in it. I think there is confusion about the status because even though it is out of beta, it is still invite only like a closed beta.

Right-on brother... I've said before elsewhere... take the time to do things right... or at least as right as you figure you can.

Mine MMORPG.com invite says nothing about beta either. Here's what I got from MMORPG:

"MMORPG.com has partnered with NCSoft to give our members access to Dungeon Runners, the free MMORPG that is currently invite-only!"

However, I "ass"u"me"d because it was invite only and the current release version is less than 1.0 that it wasn't fully released. My bad. Thanks for the clarificaiton.

P.S. Even if it was beta, I am still glad to pay $5 per month to support it's development and growth. I was impressed in the first 15 minutes.

FYI: I found this today.. when looking at the patch update note. There is link that says, "Register Now for Closed Beta!"

Not trying to pick a fight.. just sharing what I found.

One thing you'll find is that dev companies can be a bit squeezed for time on updates and small things like patch notes and their tags can fail to be updated properly. I remember one game in particular where 2 weeks after launch the Website still said the game was in beta, lol.

To be honest, they could come out right now and say "You are paying to play the Beta version of this game" and I would reply "I don't care, it's heaps of fun and worth every red cent!".

Thank you for pointing it out. Now that I know about it I can work on getting it fixed

That is simply outdated information...sorry about that.

I feel the same way. This is more fun than many games I've paid for. For $5, who cares if it is still in beta? It's less buggy than, say, Titan Quest and that's been out for nearly a year and now with an expansion pack that's also bugged. At least DR has an excuse for being slightly unpredictable..LOL. I think it's a lot of fun, and hopefully, it will get even better (especially when I can use more than one character !)

What? People having fun playing a game that isn't perfect?! Don't say such things! Before you know it, the devs will start thinking people actually appreciate the work they do. And who knows what mayhem and irresponsibility that would lead to. </sarcasm>

Think more quests - and more silliness. The special titles for the classless system (which will depend on your character's build) should be a lot of fun in itself.

A lot more is in the works.

I'm hoping one of those titles is "Combat Chef"

I don't see the quests being that valuable, even if they are a fun way to add more depth and 'silliness' to the game.

Gold can be easily farmed, and there's not much to spend it on once you're lv 40 and have 3-4 million from farming Chieftain. There's no XP reward, and KCs aren't worth it considering you can only get yellows and rarely purples.. the Sam proc at 10% is just not worth it for purples that can be easily farmed from bosses.

If they allowed you pick which item type Sam offered wherever you find him, then I would consider it worth the trouble.
