Opinions on the patch
#18180 - 03/25/07 12:51 AM

Ok.. I don't mean this to turn into a whine/flame war but I wanted to register my opinion on what I think are some of the negative aspects of the patch that should probably be looked at by the devs... and no, I have no intention of touching on character class nerfs.. that's a fact of life in a MMO.. what I want to look at is serious balance problems within the mechanics of the game itself.

1. Ranged critters fleeing from melee characters. Realistic, yes.. needs to be tweaked? YES! They just won't stop.. playing in HDoL tonight, we were chasing Orok healers the _length of the map_ before they turned around and trucked all the way back. It's nearly impossible to kill them before they wander into another group, and another group, and another group, and another group.. this applies to all the ranged critters. The fact that they flee your character isn't the problem. The fact that they have no limit to how far they'll flee is.

2. I feel very sorry for any new players coming through the game right now.. after 2 hours of trying to solo I scraped together a group of 4 (3 fighters, 1 mage) and we went and paid Abbadon a visit.. As far as we can tell he is completely unkillable. Killing his healer guard causes him to instantly rez it, and there doesn't seem to be a limit on how often he can do it... same for his warrior guards. If you just attack him, his healer will jump in when he hits 90% health and pump him back to full.. If you somehow manage to deal more than 90% he'll rip out Rain of Fire and that _does_ heal him back to full. With three warriors attempting interrupts with butcher and righteous stomp, we didn't once manage to land a stun, so I can safely say if he isn't immune to stun, he's 99.9% resistant to it. I managed to crit hit three times in a row for 9850, 6407, 7701, and he healed it in less than 5 seconds. Adding more players simply ups his hit points, so what are we supposed to do here? Get a level 10 to generate the instance then flood him with level 60's? This one desperately needed to be tested before it was released. As it stands now, people who do not have the obelisk past abbadon will likely never get to see it.

3. Quality of purple drops. I'm a level 41 Fighter right? I got a purple helmet this afternoon.. level 39, few resists, some strength, bit of intellect.. it had 26 defense on it. I've gotten whites of a comparable level that are better than this.. most of my gear is back to being yellow again because there simply aren't any purple drops that can even compare with it.. and don't get me started on mythics... the 2 that I've managed to get are just plain terrible. The only reason I still have them is they're the only 2 I've ever managed to get.

4. Rate of purple drops. In 6 hours in HDoL today I got 5 purples. In 20 minutes at Sissirat today I got 14 purples. This is a problem guys. The point of this game is not really supposed to be endless boss farming. HDoL is supposed to be a fun, challenging and rewarding area. Not somewhere to kill a bit of time because you've just finished farming Rotgut for 5 hours straight. If the intention is to force players to farm the bosses repeatedly to get decent gear so be it.. Put some bosses randomly scattered through each floor of HDoL then so we have somewhere else to farm them then. Better yet, give the gatekeeper on the first floor some decent drops! Not 3200 gold and 3 greens (this afternoon, yet again).

Again, I don't intend this to turn into a flame session, but I'm starting to get a bit frustrated. I'm mid level in the game now and rapidly running out of anything to do.. I can't get past Abbadon... I can't get any sort of decent drop in HDoL, the ranged healers in there are just pure frustration, and I'm sick of farming out lower level boss monsters in an effort to get slightly better gear. Is this the intent of the game? Have someone play for a month, pay $5 then leave because it's become Ragnarok Online all over again.. endless grind for no real reason?

I sincerely hope the developers read this with an open mind because as it stands now the game is in trouble.. just looking at the player balance is enough to show that.. of a hundred people on the server at any given point, less than 10 are over level 40.. so where are all your high level players going?

leaving, just like me. but they dont seem to care, because they keep flooding the game with new players who are shelling over their cash, often in 6 month hits, so they're getting their money right?

and just use the transporter past abby. not worth anyone's time right now. i guess the devs used a full team of 4 maxxed chars grouped with a lvl 40 to kill him in their testing (he will still spawn at a certain minimum lvl, so a lvl 10 leader wont help)

as for seeing changes.. i wouldnt get your hopes up. this game is not known for devs who do updates often, who listen to their player base, or who inform their playerbase

I thought you left yesterday?

I do hope you find something you can be totally satisfied with Laurana, though I can't help but think you will be just another gamer who takes a fun recreation soooo seriously it will always cause you angst.

Peace

Oh, almost forgot..

5. Dual Wield.. ok.. I went into HDoL today with a pair of 1 handed axes that outclass my 2 hander in every way.. more str, more agi, more end, more DPS added, more damage overall.. and tried killing a pair of identical heroes.. the long and short is that dual wield is still broken.. I was dropping hero class monsters in 5-7 seconds with my 2 hander, and the stronger dual wield pair was taking 12-14... not sure what is going on here, but IMO dual wield is still broken and needs to be looked at

Assuming people are actually paying the monthly fee. We have no way of knowing one way or the other unless/until they release some actual numbers. Until then, we can only make assumptions.

Don't you think that's a little harsh, Laurana? We complained about only getting one character per account, they said they'd work on a way to give us more. We complained about the old map system, they gave us a much better map system. Yes, there are times when they don't always do what we want... but that's not the same thing as not listening.

And while I agree that it would be nice to get much more communication from the Dev's, the problem is that it comes with a price: The more time they spend HERE, the less time they have to work on the game and fix things. It's a double edged sword.

There is also the problem that if they *do* tell us about stuff that's really cool, but it ends up changing at the last minute, then people tend to scream bloody murder. (See Skills, Weapon Customization, and just about every issue update for City of Heroes/Villains as an example)

Now, I understand your upset. Heck, I don't blame you, either. But I think your letting your desire to see the game become the kind of game we all want to play get the better of you.

Erm.. im sure you work with NCsoft somehow. Anyway, NCsoft will keep numbers on how many paying members they have. And I agree that there are so few with intrest of moving past level 50+..including me. So there you have it, another one who are canceling the account.

WOW, they actually listened to one or two thing we said! And the rest will come next year. Its easy to see how unserious this game will turn out to be if changes wont be made faster.. its not beta anymore you know! Ill make a big review on mmorpg.com about how I experienced the game and the support. So far I didnt get any help to my problems with the game.. They deleted my posts on the forum.

If the game makers does not have time to answer serious and well thought posts and feedback which ofcourse would be of great value to a serious gaming company, then im glad I figured that out now, and not in 1 year.

What about just listening or even asking the playerbase what needs to be changed.. I have read most posts on this forum now, and I can see the lack of feedback already. Waiting 1 month or 2 months for a change you dont even know are a good one for the playerbase as a whole, is just plain making me feel bad

NCsoft, you made me cancel my membership. You lost months of my money right there. Bye all

I fail to see how saying that there might not actually be a large influx of new people coming in and paying for the monthly subscription suddendly means I somehow work for NCSoft. Especially considering how I've pointed people who arn't happy with DR to other free games that they might want to try.

But apparently giving the Dev's the benefit of the doubt and NOT treating them like lying, cheating weasels intent on destroying a game I want to see succeed means I must be in their pocket.

Have you tried PM'ing Crickette and asking why your posts were deleted? Because they should have at least told you why.

And believe me, I want to see fixes and changes as much as you do. But I also realise that it's not something they can do in a day. And I believe them when they say that the patch wasn't intended to take this long, and got held up due to unforseen reasons. Now, if in a month or two nothings changed? Then yeah, I'll be with you. But until then, I believe in giving people a fair chance to fix mistakes, and I'm going to do that here, too.

They actually do take the time to read posts and do respond on occasion. Hell, if they are anything like the CoH/V Dev's, then they do it on their lunch breaks or at home. But there comes a time when they simply can't due to being busy working on trying to fix the stuff people are bitching about.

And at least they DO communicate with us. Some Dev's on other games don't. (Or, in the case of Derek Smart, he reads it and then flames the hell out of you.)

They DO communicate with us. They've actually communicated with us more then some Dev's do. Heck, some don't even communicated except through go-betweens. If you feel like they are not listening ENOUGH, then that's your opinion, and I wont fault you for that. But I do disagree with it.

I have the right to tell how I experienced them, dont I? Even tho many would disagree.

Actually I dont expect to be a ping pong ball in between to fix their mistakes. Event tho I expect Crickette to read my posts on the forum. I already posted it before. I am a customers, and if you heard the saying: Customers are always right. I would not like to be threated like a slave which have to stress more than what I already did

I didnt say a day did I? Anyway I am not expecting a day or two, but I would like to get some feedback atleast on how long I can expect to wait? If I knew it would take only 2 weeks +-, I would have thought maby I should wait. Previously they shown thats not the case, and everyone should be considering atleast 1 month for changes (money goes tick tack).

You sounds abit naive in this case. What happend last patch? It took too long, and how did they do the patch? Weak communication with the playerbase. So I guess we should expect the same thing to happend again, until they prove else.

Yes, they try to communicate, still they dont see the value of their playerbase experience (just look at the last patch, how it turned out).

Naive and a bit misguided maybe. Still going for that free month I see.

Actually, this is a very good and valid point. I have found that in most cases, past performance is an accurate predictor of future performance. At this point, we can only assume that the next patch may take every bit as long as this one. We have been given no reason to think otherwise. All I can say is, "lets wait and see".
