Asked not to use knockback!?!
#16860 - 03/08/07 10:58 AM |
The other day, I was logged in as my new, secret fighter alt and was teaching newbies how to farm Sissirat. All three of the players I was grouped with were mages. After the first battle, one of the mages asked me to stop using knockback attacks, because I kept knocking mobs out of his spell path. I responded that using butcher was an integral part of being a fighter and that I wasn't going to stop using it. As far as I'm concerned, keeping a boss knocked down is part of a fighter's job. I can understand (a little) being irritated about having to re-target a mob, but mages normally have enough mana that it should only be a very minor inconvenience (at most). I say this having played two mages into the 30's. What do you all think? Was I inconsiderate or right? |

I don't think it's inconsiderate. It's more one of those things that you should discuss if you're grouping with some people regularly, and it's getting in the way; for one-time groups, everyone should really just deal with their differences in strategy. I can understand how they feel. I used to group with a fighter friend of mine, and he would, without fail, stomp just as I was using my cleave. We solved the problem by splitting up larger mobs so that we didn't get in each other's way. -------------------- Swordgleam - Level 40-something Arcane Fighter Vanishing into the wilderness from May 25 to late August. |

Hmmmmm...you are right. Using butcher is an integral part of being a fighter. I dont group much, and I've never played a mage, so I cant relate on that end. As a fighter, I've never had a problem soloing Sissirat's Lair. Like most everything else, communication seems to be the key. |

i guess it only affects mages.. because as a ranger.. if im holding down my mouse button to attack.. my shots will follow the target wherever they are, knocked back or not. ive never played as a mage, so i oculdn't say. what annoys me however, is when people insist on running around and having them chase them. no ranger can keep up with the movement, and it does more damage than good. -------------------- The FAQ-Read it! Speaking for the mage char, it is irritating when you're trying to kill mob members and having to retarget all the time because the fighter in your group keeps knocking the opponent back. But that's just me... |

Quote: I can see that if you're already at max range for your spells and the mob gets knocked back just out of reach because your character does not automatically run closer to get in range again. And I know retargetting gets tough even as a fighter. After I cleave I have a hard time retargetting anythign around me and I end up running back and forth just to lay down another target... or letting go of the mouse button to drink a potion and having to retarget. But for boss mobs like sissirat, butcher is key to stop him from damaging everyone if even for a few seconds. When he gets knocked down thats a good time to drink a potion or reposition yourself because you have a few seconds to do so. |

well as a mage myself (one of those three grouped with you i believe) a warrior doing knockback doesn't bother me a bit. mages die easy as hell so any damage a tank prevents me from getting is fine by me. besides i'd rather you knockback than me get stunned while re-buffing or something |

Quote: The comment "you can leave the group if you don't like it" was the inconsiderate part actually. So much for communication. -------------------- Tytalus - Ranger Octavian - Mage Vorenus - Fighter |

Quote:Quote: Although that is essentially what I said, I thought I was more civil than that and only stated that after a few comments from you, which--I felt--were telling me how to play my fighter. Since I was the group leader and was teaching other players (some obviously new) how to farm, I felt it wasn't worth discussing any further and offered you the opportunity to leave or continue playing with us. I'm sorry if I offended you. |

No you were pretty much snarky about it but apology accepted. The problem I had with knockback (though I understand the purpose of it as described above), was that the best damage output spell I have is fire and I had a long string of bolts lined up but then the target would get knocked out of the way. My feeling was that killing things as quickly as possible was the best defense! Anyway, I see the advantage of using knockback and will consider what spells to use instead... -------------------- Tytalus - Ranger Octavian - Mage Vorenus - Fighter |

Firstly, it's just mana, not costing you anything for wasted spells. Secondly, if this bothers you, try line yourself up directly behind the fighter where possible, then if he knocks back a mob, your spells simply travel a little further to hit it. |

Quote:You need to stand closer. If the fighter is using knockback effectively you won't be as subject to damage. So stand closer and kite a bit if you're targeted. Standing at the edge of spell range is your problem, not his. A ranger faces the same dilemma and must compensate. A melee character has the problem of having to run up to and after mobs. It would be just as silly for him to ask you not to kill stuff he's running up to before he gets there. Ripper might have been a bit more diplomatic, but I actually think it's snarky to tell someone how to play their character. If it was that important to you, then you should have discussed it with him before you went out for the hunt. |

somethings i learned from another game. it helps if each class has a specific job. and each class to know what the jobs are of the other classes. I could go into detail about what the jobs were there how they would be related to here...but won't. its a good idea to have a general idea of what the jobs would be, teach the newbies the same basic guidlines. when starting a group...the one leading the group give the general guidelines to follow before actually heading into the dungeon. it will definitely stop things like this that happens. and when everyone is on the same page going through the dungeons will be quicker safer and more effective....haveing a general guidline for each class will just make it easier to adapt your soloing skills to each group joined, if not you'll have to keep track of several tactics using a different one depending on the group your with...which can be a pain. |

They should deal with it and get better. |

I think knockback is an integral part of being a mage. Especially if you're trying to solo. Example, I spam lightning on a mob, but they're still alive. They start eating me alive... answer? Posion Gas, Righteous Stomp their face, slam a potion, spam some more lightning. |

Haven't grouped with a mage yet. Fighters can solo this game easy. |

I used righteous unti i got to like lvl30 or so. Haven't been using much lately because I want them as close to me as possible. But until a warrior get's far enough along knock-back is a must. I do still use holy roller and cleave sometimes. Gary |

If I remember correctly, the following mage spells follow the target once targeted: -shadow bolt -shadow lightning -shadow word: SMACKDOWN and the following spells continue to damage a target after they are knocked down: -Ring of Fire -Gaseous Blast If you're having trouble hitting things that are getting knocked back, I highly reccomend using those spells. The three-prong missiles may also be a good idea, as even if something gets knocked back you have a chance to hit it with one of the auxilary bolts. |

My personal feeling is that every build is set for a certain style and it will have conflicts with every other build out there. Nobody will always the have the perfect fit for group mates unless they are built from lvl 1 for the soul purpose of grouping with the other. The only thing we can do is learn what is being used and build off of that to find a way to make it work. Group mates and bosses are all the same. What works with one may not work with the next. To wokkawokka: No need to let go of the fire button to drink a potion. Just slap space for a heal and "M" for some blue juice. If your health is dropping too fast for your liking, just double tap space, you will slam 2 (or more if needed) poitions quickly and will allow you to keep fighting on with out any interuptions. Unless of course you were slow to the space bar. |

Well, each time someone sends a boss flying at least 6 of my fireballs miss just from that. Then there are the other fireballs that miss from him running back to the fighter so yeah... It's not as big a deal if you're using shadow spells, but for fire and water it can really really suck. You have to think in terms of what will give you less damage. Will 3 mages hitting the boss and killing him faster prevent more damage than him being knocked down will? Unless he's pretty much constantly on the ground i'm guessing the mages being able to hit him will. That said, i don't think many fighters are ever going to stop spamming knockdown for the good of the other 90% of their group, so i just use shadow spells and don't have to worry about it. |
