Dungeon Runner Shorthand Guide
vB post 33233 - 03/04/07 01:43 PM

Some of these definitions are detailed on GuildHelper.com

General Terms

Aggro
–(verb) To aggro means to obtain the attention of the enemy by any means. Sometimes this is done
intentionally (taunting, tanking, shooting) and sometimes unintentionally (stumbling accidentally into
aggro range of the enemy)
-(noun) To have aggro means you have now obtain the attention of the enemy and are now their
primary target.

AoE (Area of Effect)
-(noun) AoE refers to the powers and spells that affect a given area. Usually there is a designated
target and a certain radius of affect. Some AoE effects are instant and some are timed. For timed AoE
effects, an anchor is needed. A common MMORPG AoE powers is fireball where everyone
surrounding the target of the fireball will also get damage.

Anchor
-(noun) The target chosen for AoE timed effect. The AoE effect can be either buffing or debuffing.
Often debuffing powers lasting a period of time are cast on a particular enemy affecting all enemies
around him. That target or the anchor is often kept alive to keep the effect on going. Whereas,
buffing effects are placed on the group’s anchor so that all members surrounding the anchor will
receive the benefits of the buff.

Buff
-(verb) To buff means to cast a spell or power granting the target improved stats temporarily.
Common buffs include increased damage, defense, health, speed and/or other effects.
-(noun) A buff refers to the spell or power that can temporarily increase stats of a target.

DoT
_(noun) DoT or Damage over time refers to an effect, spell or power that will damage a target over
time. A common DoT example would be the power poison which will damage 10 points each second
over 20 second.

DPS
-(noun) DPS or Damage Per Second. Used as an easily way to calculate the amount of damage a
certain character, power, sword can do. Because each power, weapon or other spells have different
action speeds, using DPS allow players to determine the relative damage per second. DPS characters
are those who can do a lot of damage per second.

Farm
-(Verb) To repeatedly gathering resources and killing enemies on a particular area. Once an area is
cleared, new enemies re-spawn and are killed off again to obtain rare loot, money, items, experience
and etc. This is similar to the analogy of farmers growing crop, harvesting them and growing more to
repeat the cycle.

Mob
-(noun) A group of enemy or monsters

Newbie/Noobs/Newb/n00b
-(verb) A derogatory term used on a player who is annoying, inexperienced, lack teamwork, or with
little skills.

Ninja
-(verb) The act of stealing loot unfairly out of greed, without giving other party members a chance to
loot or a fair way to decide on the loot. An exposed ninja will often be blacklisted among the
MMORPG community.

Pull
-(verb) A tactic used to draw a single enemy out of a mob so that the engagement in battle does not
draw the attention of the remaining mob.

PuG
-(noun) PuG or Pick Up Group refers to the party of players who have never worked together
before, cooperating now to perform a mission or task. Because no one is familiar with another, PuG
are notoriously known for deaths, ninjas, arguments and failures.

Tank
-(verb) The act of attracting aggro intentionally from mobs and taking the damage from the mob.
Tanking usually requires high defense, a lot of health, and primarily melee abilities.

Train
-(noun/verb) The event or the act of a player who intentionally or unintentionally aggro a group of
enemy and is being chased by a line of that mob much like a train of cars. Generally, this is done in
an attempt to flee the enemy. However, there are times when this is done maliciously to bring nasty
mobs to a group of low level characters camping. Training intentionally is frowned upon and can lead
to expulsion in some MMORPGs.

okay i have to say this. newbie and newb are NOT derogatory terms. they are simply used to describe a new player. noob/noobie/nub are derogatory. please don't get them confused.

I think this is generally a good type of guide to post, but it probably needs to be re-written to the specifics of this game. Some of the definitions in this list do not apply to Dungeon Runners or are derogatory.

1) Laurana's dead-on about newb Vs. n00b. They are completely different

2) Anchors do not apply to this game, for now. Anchors are very common in some other games like CoH, however.

3) Trains do not exist in this game.

4) I take exception to the negative comments regarding PuGs, especially since this game's group play is entirely based on PuGs (for now). Also, everybody starts with a PuG. That's how one makes friends in online games.

5) Thus far, I've never seen anybody abbreviate any of the dungeons except HDoL. The only one I've ever abbrevieated (other than HDoL) is Mutantous Malaise as MM. Personally, I like that players actually spell out the Dungeon names.

I've seen Vergrim's as VV, but yeah, I've yet to see any other abbreviations for dungeons beyond that and HDoL. Let's not force this game into unintelligible slang before it degrades there naturally, shall we?

There are a couple of minor typos and grammar errors, too. Under "DoT," the last word should have an "s" added. Under "Farm," the first word, "To," should be deleted.

I have always used "PBAoE" rather than "PBAE."

Yes they do. Train doesnt always have to mean someone pulling a group of mobs to dump on someone else, or someone running from the mobs. It could be someone pulling the mobs to get them close so they can spam an AoE to kill them.

I always called that 'herding'.
<shrug>
But I have always used 'train' to mean 'lvl up skills'.
<shrug again>

And I'm in the group that says 'newb' and 'noob' are VERY different.

I am also in the newb vers noob group.
Newb is acceptable and used by people to simply state they are new to a game.
Noob is used to describe someone who is obnoxious, full of themselves and generally not a nice person.
