We need skeletons. And vikings! (Dungeon suggestion)
vB post 143257 - 10/18/08 10:20 AM

It occurred to me a little while back that this might be one of the first MMO's that I've played who doesn't have any skeletons in the game. There fore I hereby formally suggest there to be a new dungeon where these evil creatures roam. It will be When The Raven Flies meets Dungeon Runners.

So, here's what I though. Since we don't have any skeletons today and vikings and their old religion would be totally fun to make a parody of, let's do it! And since no one follows this religion anymore, there's no one who'll take offense either. ^^

Dungeon theme:
Doesn't really matter. Winter and fall preferably.

Monsters:
New skins on old monsters is well enough. Skeleton Fighters and Archers are a must. And Norse Priests.

Boss Dungeon:
I'll leave this to your imagination. It could be to defeat Thor (Tor), Odin (Oden) or the evil Balder. Or why not battle one of the greater Vikings such as Erik the Red.

Inhabitants
Ah, this is where the fun starts. During the viking age there where loads of well known characters and Gods to make fun of. Some examples are:

Normal persons
- Leif Erikson - The viking that discovered Vinland (Amerika)
- Erik the Red – Famous ”hero” who slayed his neighbor for not returning a shovel, but also avenged on another neighbor who slayed his slaves in a cruel way.
- Harald Hårfager (Harald Fairhair) – The norwegian king who were the first king to unite all of Norway though years of war, this only to impress a girl.
- Harald Blåtand (Harald Bluetooth Gormson) – NOT the inventor of the technology Bluetooth but named after it. The symbol for Bluetooth is made up by the rune letters H and B. Anyways, Harald is a famous danish king who brought christianity to scandinavia, thus starting the end of the viking era.
- Egil Skallagrimson – The main person in Egil's Saga who is said to be a warewolf.

Gods - The more famous ones are:
- Oden (Odin) – The king of the Gods. Has lost one eye and has 2 ravens (Hugin and Munin) who tells him everything that happens and rides a 8-legged horse (makes it the fastest in the world I guess) named Sleipner.
- Tor (Thor) – God of Thunder and oldest son of Odin. Has a hammer called Mjölner. Brings order out of chaos. Has a hell of a temper. :P
- Loke (Loki) – The 'beautiful' but evil god. Son of two giants but looks normal since he's a shapeshifter. Once tricked another god of killing Balder.
- Balder (Baldr) – Son of Oden and the god of all that's good. It were impossible to dislike him, he were beutiful, light, bright and wize. Killed by his blind brother Höder by a trick by the evil Loke.
- Heimdall – Son of all the nine worlds of the Norse mythology (humans, gods, giants, dwars and more). His teeths are of gold and he has excellent hearing and sight as he's the guardian of the bridge Bifrost to the gods world Asgård (Valhalla is just a house btw). Over his shoulder he carries the giant Gjallarhorn (yelling horn in old norse) in which he'll blow to warn about Ragnarök coming, who is the end of the world.

Quests:
All depends of how you twist it. You could make the goal to find Vinland (America) and have quests based on that. Or a quest to stop the evil god Balder and Ragnarök (end of the world) and therefor help the gods gather important artifacts for that.

If anyone have any thought and ideas of this, just add to this thread and I will gather them all up before i take it to IdeaRunners.

I like the theme idea. Vikings FTW!

Perhaps the one of the side dungeons could be Hel's realm? Lots and lots of ice, and a nasty side dungeon boss to slay.

Also, Fenrisulven and Midgårdsormen have to be there. I can't believe you left them out!

And Tyr, the one handed god of war who lost his hand to the Fenriswolf when he was distracting the great monster by scritching its ears, giving the other gods time to sneak a magic leash around its neck.

Personally, I think that the final boss of the dungeon should be a god, not a human hero... perhaps Odin with his wife Frigg and his sons around him?

Dang, I had them in my notes but forgot them in my post

Animal type monsters

Fenrisulven (The Fenris Wolf) - Son of the evil Loke and Angerboda from the Giant kindom. He is chained in Jotumheim (The Giants Kingdom) by a rope made by the dwars of the mountains roots, the noice of a cat, the tendon of a bear, breath of a fish, womens beards and birds spit (quest-idea: Gather these). It is said that he will get loose upon judgement day and destroy the world side by side with Loke and Midgårdsormen.

Midgårdsormen (Jörmundandr or the World Serpent) - Brother of the Fenris Wolf. It is said that Thor and the World Serpent will battle on the Judgement Day and just before Thor kills him, he'll bite Thor who'll die of his venom.

Hel - Sister of the two above and the ruler of Nifelheim, the underworld. Where the brave fighters go to Valhalla after they die, the less brave end up in Nifelheim. She's half beautiful young girl and half old hag.
In norse mythology, Hel is a frozen place where fear and cold and a harch stench rules.

Now you soon should have enough to base a new dungeon on, but still: More ideas is more than welcome.

Vikings! Nice....
Already have skeletons.....sort of... Those devestators and such...
....
ok,ok, robo-skeletons! Far more original then normal ones!

But vikings are a very good idea!
Ahh.... i remember the days with Knights of Honor and Norway. I didnt con... conq.... sorry, lack of english. Anyway, plundered half the Europe, won millions (and gave it all to Serbia, thus making it the strongest kingdom in Europe ) Those were the days....

Oh, and put in viking gear and weapons, only found in that dungeon!

Like that Hammer of Thor thingy.

BTW, i find Valhalla the funest of heavens, if what i heard of it was really part of the myth...

I love the idea, its great, but I must burst your bubble, there are tons of skeletons in this game, particularly in Widowers nest, Verigrims, Upper Balzacks. Probably more places. There a tons in the boss encounter for widowers nest, and one plays as the boss in HDoL.

Don't bursting bubble.

But the dungeon idea is great.

I had tons on my mind upon posting, I meant to say "skeletons with helmets" and also give examples of skeletons with batwings, robes and scythes and so forth, but it seems I forgot that too. Glad you all like the idea though! I'm gonna let it sizzle here for a few days before I take it to IdeaRunners

Mjölnir is the official name of Thor's hammer.

And according to myth Valhalla is the place where the bravest warriors go... they are fetched and escorted there by female warriors (the valkyries) who care for them in Valhalla. The dead warriors pass their time training every day for Rangarok on a large battlefield. At the end of the day, they are revived and pieced back together and have a big party where the meat and beer never ends.

Sounds okay to me.

I told you! Fun! Fight, and dont care if you die, cause you are already dead!
No need to explain the fun in meat and *BEER* that never ends, hehe.
