For free I'd vote for Avast!, it's free, all you have to so is apply with your email for a key. The makers of Avast also make this tool that you might want to run first. Another free anti-virus is AVG, although Avast makes a far better product if you ask me. -------------------- DarthNinja lvl 100 Arch Ninja ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Webmaster of DarthNinja.com Darth's Ninja Shoppe " Your source for the best Dungeon Runners items " "The Thread Necromancer!" |

I hate it when computer companies try and insist that you need to subscribe/buy anti-virus software like norton or macafee. I can understand in some situations (businesses/kids/idiots), but I haven't gotten a computer virus since the 90's that I know of |

An antivirus program isn't going to get rid of the infection. They're designed for preventing infection, not cleaning up after them. You need to clean your computer first, then install a good AV program and Firewall program to help ensure your computer stays clean. You might also want to consider an anti-malware application. Unfortunately, in your case, Antivirus 2009 isn't a virus, per se, but malware. This is going to be a multi-step process: 1) Remove Antivirus 2009 malware and anything else that doesn't belong there. Here's a good start. 2) Install a good Antivirus program. Check out AV-Comparatives.org for scorecard reviews of various AV products. The best one, per their testing, is Avira AntiVir PE Premium. I use NOD32 and it's excellent and highly rated, too. 3) Install a good firewall - personally, I use Comodo, which is both excellent and free! It also has an anti-malware defense component. Fair warning, though - Comodo's rootkit defense is excellent, but can conflict with certain versions of Gameguard (which is essentially a rootkit). This can make playing some Gameguard protected games impossible (I can't play Exteel, for example). 4) Teach your brother not to install every stupid piece of crap that pops up on the screen, which is how stuff like this happens. Every time I see a system tray full of useless and/or potentially harmful applications, I cringe... Edited by Ripper_McGee (10/17/08 08:41 PM) |

Agreed. And comodo is vista only, im running MalwareBytes scan right now seems its working well. And Avast did detect the problem but only after it already installed the program. You see when my brother is on the PC (ever since the SYSRESTORE incident) I run FRAPS in the back so I can check what he did. Plus I have parental filter on but apparently the little bugger is watching me when I type the password. No worries Ill simply change the pass. -------------------- http://demosthenez.100webspace.net/d...=KingofCarnage |

Comodo is not Vista only. I use it on XP (don't have a single system with Vista - I use NOD32 and Comodo on all of them). In fact the file you download is CFP_Setup_3.0.25.378_XP_Vista_x32.exe. |

AntiVir is one of the better again with a awesome 99.2% of found threats. Nod32 only have 92% on normal settings. Source To get rid of the spywares, I'd suggest SuperAntiSpyware. -------------------- __________________________________________________ "May The Rainbows Drop As Cows From The Sky" HDoL.eu - Horrific Domain of Legend - Your source to Dungeon Runners |

After that, follow their advice and suggestions on how to keep their computer secure. Unless you can beat some serious sense into your brother, you need to learn how to keep your computer safe from him, and if you don't even have an antivirus installed you will need to start from scratch. The basics, the bare minimum is an antivirus, a firewall, a spyware blocker and a spyware real time protector that also can scan for it. Given your brother's complete ignorance about how computers work, you may need more. Ask the Malware fighting people in that forum I linked you to. -------------------- Khaz: W4 Laker Girl Khaz of Shadow and Flame Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult. And a blog. |

spyware doctor, free version from google pack http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_...=google%20pack is a good tool to remove malware. I had a stuburn malware program on this machine and of all the programs i tried spyware doctor was the only one to completely remove it. I agree also avast is very good but wont help with malware. |
