Product Placements
vB post 140971 - 10/02/08 09:43 AM

I am really enjoying this game and am surprised by how few people are playing it. Since this game doesn't take itself too seriously, how about seeking out cross-promotion deals with advertisers to get in more members? Have items in the game look and name them after real-life products. In exchange, have those companies promote this game on their products, if not give a "free" six-month subscription inside "every box". I think there are a lot of products that could get into this. Pop-Tarts currently has a wacky ad campaign. Same goes for Slim Jim. And then there is "Monster" energy drink. Could a better match be found?

Done and ongoing already. Ten Ton Hammer went in first, for tentonhammer.com, after that the Stiki Wiki Gun for TheTownstons.com.

um... I think he's referring to more of a 'Corporate Sponsorship' sort of thing, not promoting other websites...

I would think that would be an awesome way to:

a) increase income
b) add to the humor of the game
c) have other companies assist with the promotion of the game via their own products (hehehe, sneaky marketing 101 tactic)

Of course, the best thing they could do is to simply 'buy' their own name of a sports arena - like "Comerica Park" in Detroit or the "DTE Energy Music Theater" (formerly known (and still known to us locals in Michigan) as Pine Knob). Others include (and YES, these REALLY exist!):

  • The Save Mart Center (Fresno, California)
  • Value City Arena (Columbus, Ohio)
  • Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium (Troy, Alabama)
  • Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium (Louisville, KY)
  • This spot is reserved for any stadium that includes what it does into the stadium’s name as well as their name. Such examples are Lincoln Financial Field, Citizens Bank Park, Continental Airlines Arena, American Airlines Arena, Canadian Airlines Saddledome, and many more.
  • The BankAtlantic Center (Miami, FL)
  • The St. Pete’s Times Forum (Tampa, FL)
  • Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Complex (Kitchener, Ontario)
  • Pizza Hut Park (Frisco, Texas)
  • Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, TX

I think the "Dungeon Runners Palace of Auburn Hills" would be pretty spiffy...

That's correct. But more than just corporate sponsorships but actual product placements. For example, instead of a bottle of health potion, it could be a Slim Jim or a breakfast bar. Instead of a bottle of mana potion, it could be a can of Monster energy drink.

I think it would be hilarious if Audrey the Alchemist (potions gal in Townston) ran a Starbucks. We could then order different coffees that give you different bonuses. Sure, there's the standard health and mana bottles, but some drinks could have slight bonuses, such as "a double shot of espresso" giving the player a slight increase in attack speed for ten minutes. I'd even put the potions gal in a Starbucks apron.

No no no, haven't you done any quests? It's "Karlbucks" in Dungeon Runners.

I'll preface this by saying I am pretty cynical with regards to marketing and how pervasive it is in our lives, therefore:

I am categorically opposed to this idea! Seeing real world brands in Dungeon Runners (other than as parodies) would make me sick to my stomach.

But... but... but... what's the fun of escaping from reality into a hilarious parody of videogames, if reality haunts me there as well?

Well, I *sort of* agree with that--but, if it came down to maybe seeing product placements as a source of revenue for DR, or DR going down the tubes because of financial issues related to corporate accounting wankers only caring about the 'bottom line', I'd definitely rather see the glut of products blatantly emblazoned across the game.
