Build 145 - First Impressions
vB post 138273 - 09/14/08 03:01 AM

I haven't had a chance to test everything, but here are my thoughts on what I've tested so far:

Wishing Well:

Very cool concept. I've heard players complain about the garbage loot they get, but hey - it only costs 1 coin. While there appears to be some cool loot specific to it (Pirate armor, for example), I wouldn't count on attempting to get a full set from the well. Instead, I see that as an opportunity to open up trade.

As others have mentioned, the timer appears to be bugged.

New Dungeon:

While I haven't tested every level, I have run through MM1, the first subdungeon and the boss lair. Overall, it's a nice dungeon with a good mix of strong groups of mobs and the quests are funny, as usual. I love the wrestling theme! I'll test further. I did find what appears to be a bug, which I'll post separately. I'll also discuss the boss battle separately.

New Boss Battle:

Epic is a good word for it. On normal in a full group, I got one-shotted pretty regularly, but I didn't mind. It's truly a fun lair and extremely challenging. That being said, the loot appears to be pretty weak in the lair, but my filter is borked (as others have mentioned), so I don't really know what I'm missing.

While I appreciate the sponsor announcements, the text could be smaller - even at a high resolution, it can take over the screen.

Graphics Engine Update:

Holy shnikes! I'm going to post some "before-and-after" pics externally, but the new shader effects/specular lighting are great! Here are some examples I snapped (FYI, they're .pgn files, which better represent what you'll see in game, but are larger in terms of file size):

Login Before vs. Login After
Angel Before vs. Angel After
Suit1 Before vs. Suit1 After
Splint Before Vs. Splint After
! Before vs. ! After
Mobs look especially nice, too!

Not all of the textures have shine (my plate piercer, for example), so I hope it's added to more art in the future, but so far it looks fantastic and should go a long way towards silencing critics of DR's graphics, overall.

Regarding performance - I've tested this build on two machines. It runs flawlessly on my primary system (NVidia GO 7900 GS 256MB, 2GB 667 GHz RAM at 1920x1200 with all options set to highest values, including 8X AA, Core2 Duo 2.16 GHz) . On my lowest quality machine (Radeon X300 128MB [basically a PCI-E version of a Radeon 9250], 1GB RAM, P4 3 GHz), I was still able to see all the cool new effects, but with the added bonus of performing better than it did before, even in a big boss battle with a full group! Granted, I was playing at lower settings (2x AA and 1152x864), but that's better than I was playing it on the live server for that machine!

Quest Interface:

It's sweet. 'nuff said...

Minimap upgrade:

Both the minimap and the overlap map got some serious love. I really, really like these changes and also appreciate the updated art in the overlay map, especially since I gave you grief over the 8-bit graphics from the last chunk!

Potion Counters:

Yes! Now if only they were color coded when you got low...hmm, sounds like something for idearunners...

Townston Changes:

HDoL Entrance Moved - check!
KC Vendor's new looks - check!
Tad the Posse Magnate (I had to explain to my wife why I thought that was sooooo funny) - check!
Wishing Well - see above
Water - check!
Blocking objects - woohooo! no longer will I be hung up on an invisible outcropping on my way up to the bank!
Geometry - everything seems very, very nice, performance-wise

Tileset Changes:

All good, including the new Autumn Forest. Love being able to squeeze through narrow gaps.

New chests and objects:

Dig the new chests and thought the weapon racks I found were cool, too!

Thanks for the screenshots. My gaming laptop is down so I haven't been able to see how it looks now. Seems really great.

Regarding the boss fight, I still haven't done it extensively, but fighting solo can be a little overwhelming. Thankfully, the overall amount of loot appears to make it worthwhile.

As a Ranger I was able to solo it on normal, right up until the last room where the Rotgut lookalikes started coming out in droves and kicked my behind all the way back to townston. It seemed like every time I stepped into the room a new one generated. But the loot is good there. The 2 times I did it on insane in a large group I got 3 rbs and some purples and plenty of cash.

I liked the idea of the wishing well, but after getting the "free" try and then the following 1kc try I have yet to ever get to use it again. I don't even care what I get from it, just want it to work. It's been a couple days now and I've even made sure to stay online a full hour and go back and check again--still a no go. =/

The spirit in the last room does seem excessively strong.

I agree, especially since you've technically already beaten the "boss."
