Dual wield speed?
vB post 136661 - 09/03/08 02:05 PM

Game mechanics question: If I dual wield one slow and one fast weapon, do they keep their respective attack speed, do they average out to a "middle speed", or do they both slow down to the speed of the slowest?

From the little bit of messing around with dual-wielding I have done, it appears to average out a little bit. Most the time my main and off hand weapon end up a slight bit faster then they would be by themselves with a one handed build.

I'm sorry, but you are just wrong on this one. They keep their respective speeds. Been doing this for months now. Go ahead boyo, equip an Ancient Blade and a Chainsaw Sword and see the difference. If the Chainsaw Sword is your main weapon, than skills such as Holy Roller and Soul Rend will have a longer cooldown, due to that weapon's slower attack speed, and vice versa in case of the Ancient Sword being the main hand weapon.

It's also pretty visible when you're attacking.

Thought something was improving it. I knew the numbers on my character screen wasn't lying when I equipped and unequip the second wepaon and watch the speeds drop.

..........I never said it didn't. I just said that when dual-wielding weapons of different attack speeds, their speeds DON'T scale down to a same attack speed, the difference between their speeds is still visible.

If the game gives an automatic speed buff of 20% when dual wielding, it makes sense you'd get faster speeds. I haven't paid attention to the attack animations (I usually watch the blue and red bars in the upper right corner when I'm in fights), so I appreciate all these answers. Thanks! Now I know that if I want shorter cool-down on my Cleave and Soul Rend I should always put the faster weapon in my main hand.

You said they "average out"...as in "they both scale up to one speed", was that what you were thinking? If so, then you were wrong.

And I'm glad this helped you out Khaz, have fun dual-wielding.

It USED to be good 'till the "PvP fix" "rebalanced" it to something completely not needed, mediocre to bad, basically screwed. Dual wield pays off better.

Agrees, I loved Dark Conniption before they changed it. More or less useless in PvE now.
