Guidence! or something :P
vB post 135093 - 08/24/08 03:35 AM

So, finally my work week is comming to a close and im looking at a nice 4 days off.... Downloaded the free DR a few days back after seeing the box in a local store.. and have decided its worth the 20$ im gonna spend on my way home picking it up... Just wondering from the Vets out there.. I get the idea that from a skillpoint side of things character development and builds are quite open... But for someone looking at probably soloing most of his time away... or running in 2's with my roomie... Any suggestion on class for ease of learning the game vs sucess in a solo enviroment?

Well if your going to focus on leveling (killing lots of small mobs quickly) you'd do best to go with mage and AoEs.

For farming bosses on insane at low(er) levels you'd want something with higher hit points... fighter or maybe ranger.

for stats mages need mostly Intel (+mana +spell damage) and some endurance for health. At lower levels when BSoL (Mage shield spell) is weak you'll want higher end then at later levels.

Rangers need Agility (+attack rating +damage) and endurance, also a little intel for spells.

Fighters need a mix of Strength for damage, agility for rating so you don't miss all the time and end so you don't die all the time.

I would play something other then mage for the first few levels until you get BSoL.

Good luck,
Darth

It is also dependant upon play style. DR was my first MMO and I learned very quickly that a mage or ranger type was not for me. The running and firing etc was just not fun... To me. Others obviously enjoy it. Fortunately, you can change your stats at any point (as long as you have the gold) and you can have skills from any trainer. Thus, if you try a fighter and it is not for you, simply change it to something else.

Oh, and welcome to DR!

I suppose this is also a good place to ask, with the ability to buy from any trainer, and respec at any time.... is there any diffrence to the 3 toons at the start of the game? when you create a new char.. other then starting equipment and your 2 starting skills?

I guess what im trying to say is lets say i started as a mage, with a little gold i could essentially go be a fighter should i choose at no disadvantage to someone who had picked fighter to start?

No, it's only the starting-gear and 3 skills or so that differ when you start a new char. Skills can be expensive so if you wanted to change early on, it would probably be faster to just make a new char rather than run around and farm.

Edit: Think it's 4 skills. 2 passive and 2 active.

It doesn't cost much to re-spec so yes, you can just change whenever you like if you've collected good gear for another class. But then you gotta learn what skills is good and so on for that class but it's just to play around just as you like.

An interesting choice can be to put 100% into end, and build sets of gear with the primary attributes for each class. Throw on your + agility gear and go be a ranger...etc. buying all the skills may eat the gold, and your not gonna have the 'perfect' build, but it makes it easy to switch classes, and is a fun way to casually enjoy the climb to 100.

I honestly couldn't imagine my life being like that. Writing game reviews. You go through so many games, all the content starts to blend in your mind. I prefer casual gaming, usually sticking to one or two games at a time

First and foremost, welcome to Dungeon Runners; it's always good to hear from new members, especially ones who seem pretty excited to play. I hope you learn to love it like us diehard fans do.

As for which class to choose, well, it's entirely dependent on what you decide you like. At lower levels (actually at pretty much any level), it's reasonably cheap to respec, if you decide to change to a different class. Since you have the option of making 3 characters, you could make one in each class and level each to around level 10-15. This would not take very long and would give you an idea about which fighting style you like the best. Since, as most of us would agree, getting to the end is not a race and while one class might get you to the "end" faster, it's more enjoyable to get there with a class you really enjoy; rather then spend your time playing as something you don't enjoy as much just to get to the end faster. Plus, once you reach level 100, you'll have probably bought all the skills and have ample opportunity to switch around or combine all three of the classes.

As for getting paid to play, I think my husband would be very jealous of your job.

I used to be paid to surf Tom's Hardware, AnandTech, and similar sites, and to go to LAN parties... good times, good times.

I miss my internship sometimes.

IMO, you can level quickly with any of the classes, it's more a matter of style and the game does play differently with each class. Someone once gave the advice to stay in the little dew valley and just keep running it over and over until you can't get any more xp out of it (I think L10) and then run algernon until you can't get any more xp out of it.

I did it and took me all of about 3 hours of game play to get to L10 and I don't remember how quickly but I got to L25 shortly thereafter. It was boring but good advice to level quickly. It's fun trying something harder, of course, but it's also fun having a powerful character!

In the low to mid teens in level, I almost never did a dungeon, just joined groups farming sissirat and snow chieftain. I didn't get xp as quickly but I really needed money and better equipment. I still did a few dungeons but when I was more powerful, it was a heck of a lot easier.

Congrats on buying the damn box! Major potions rock because they stack in 10s and the gnome makes farming so much easier and less of a pain to members when you farm with them. And, of course, member items are everywhere!

Have fun!

May eat. I don't have any extra gold yet. I not very good at the game though. I have heard of others that have bean able to take out Balzack easily with a Endurance build. I have yet to take him out more then once and it took me a ton of tries and potions even then. I have finally managed to get an Endurance character to level 60 in my test runs though. Finally stopped deleting them for the fun of it. They do great in everything except Balzack runs from my experience. though others may say differently.
