It isn't my first one either, and spelling it really isn't that hard, especially since both IE7 and Firefox have spellcheckers

Plus, he threw a hissy-fit over it. That means leniency would reduce his entertainment value, and we just can't have that, now can we?

Heh. yes, point made.

Some of our members on the forums write English well enough that I didn't know it wasn't there first language. This means you, Khaz, for example. But, yeah, I think some breathing room is well-justified for people who aren't native speakers.

The attitude that really gets to me, though, is Americans (or other native speakers) who assert that, because we're on the internet, they don't have to bother trying. I admit I'm overly picky about it, but it gets really annoying seeing those 'oh so common' mistakes over and over again- to, too, two; your, you're; there, their, they're...etc.

For many many years I had an email/forum signature that read,

"Spelling and grammar are to the internet world as tooth-brushing and hair-washing are to the real world. No matter how nice of a person you are, people are still going to form a bad opinion of you based on your outward presentation and hygiene."

Basically, what gets to me is similar to your complaint, AlienEighter. Just because we're on the internet doesn't mean you won't be judged on appearances and first impressions more than anything else.

Hehe, nope.

About the "common mistakes", I definitely do some myself all the time too. Always get confused whether it's "wich" or "which" since I've spelled it "wich" for soooo many years now. I do know it's suppose to be "which" but... you know... old dog, new tricks.
I've hired Joolie (Jynxed in the forums, Jooniperbug and some others in-game) to be my personal spell-checker and corrector whenever I'm on W7 visiting.

There's also a spellchecker in Safari as well (not that I'm a Mac user, I'm just equal opportunity browser user).

I don't care much about incorrectly spelled words...I really hate that lazy "shorthand" or SMS stuff, leaving letters out on purpose, substituting other letters for 'cooler' ones, etc. Ur 2 crzy wut u do tht 4?!!!

I pretty much ignore any message that comes to me in game like that..."Can u hlp me?" I don't put them on my ignore list, I just don't respond. Typos are one thing, they happen and not everyone is a perfect speller, that stuff I can deal with...it's the "1337" speak and shorthand that kills me. Is it so difficult to type the way you speak? Communication is communication, spoken or written it doesn't matter. Great example is Warcraft "ROFLMAO" animation (YouTube it if you've not seen it).

Sounds to me like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed KoC i thought that joke was cute and funny. All the time we americans go somewhere else and expect everyone to speak our language. But how many stores/resteraunts do you walk into here that can speak to you in 7 different Languages just to make sure all the tourists are happy.

America maybe a complete Melting pot when it comes to Religion, Food, Color, Race, and all that good stuff. But when it comes to Language "Speak our or GTFO" is the general consensus.

Indeed...
Hardly anyone over 18 didnt learn that one (some even under that age, word!), but rare are people who actually mastered it. Mastering it requieres full concentration, sacrafice in both mental and phisical (it is kinda hard to walk when speaking drunk, specially if you speak it good ) shapes.

Sorry, but I tend to agree with KOC to some extent on this. I am American and have studied several languages. When I travel, I try to learn at least enough of another language for basic communication. I do not expect everyone to speak English, but am grateful when I need help and some is available.

Granted that there are more multi-lingual Europeans than Americans and granted that some American's are unwilling to learn another language, but Europeans do not have an ocean separating them from one another. It's harder to become fluent in a language when you don't hear it and can't practice it.

If I were to live an work in a country whose language was different from my own, I would most certainly learn that language. I expect the same from anyone coming to live and work in my nation.

Like Lyllia, I understand, but do not communicate in Internet shorthand since I don't like sloppy speech in any lanuage.

As for sign language, it is most certainly considered a language and is taught as a credit course in many colleges and universities.
