Elemental Weapons and Skill Shots
vB post 130903 - 07/29/08 12:01 AM

I should be able to figure this out, but I must admit I haven't as yet.

Suppose I am using a bow/gun with elemental damage and I also have a skill shot, such as noxious shot, in left or right mouse button position. Will the elemental damage that is tied to the weapon apply on top of the poison damage from my skill shot. Or, will the elemental weapon damage apply only if I am using a normal shot?

Thanks to anyone who can answer.

That depends.

If the weapon gives you a bonus to your overall Poison DPS, you can open up your character sheet and see your Poison DMG has been increased and thus it applies to all Poison elemental spells you have.

If the weapon gives an elemental bonus to weapon DMG it does NOT apply to skills of the same element, only to the weapon. You can determine that easily; suppose you have a bow that gives +X Ice Bonus to weapon DMG, if you're using it to kill an Ice Creature it will still recieve normal DMG, but resist some of the Ice DMG you deal with your normal shot (The "resist" pointer floats above their head every time their natural resistance blocks elemental DMG).

The elemental damage tied to your weapon will flavor every shot of your weapon with that element. Regardless of various skill shots.

For example, the Demon Sniper adds shadow damage, which means every shot will do shadow damage on top of normal physical damage and any skill shot you use.

Heh, are you sure? If it adds elemental DMG bonus to weapon attack doesn't that mean his NORMAL ATTACKS benefit from an elemental boost? I honestly doubt elemental bonuses that apply to normal weapon DMG stack on top of the elemental DMG of skill shots. Like, yeah...I dunno, I play a ranger but I've never seen a Poison-Shadow shot. After all, that's why you also have bonuses to elemental DMG, that is to skills only, right?

Seriously, you're confusing me.

There are two types of elemental buffs for rangers:

1) + Elemental DPS to weapon attack (Demon Sniper is a good example - it adds + shadow DPS to the weapon attack)

* This bonus elemental DPS is not included in character sheet min/max damage - it's essentially "hidden" DPS

2) + DPS to Elemental Attacks (+30 DPS to Poison Attacks, for example )

* Can come from gear or from skills (Toxic Talent, for example)

* Buffs skills like Gaseous Blast and + Elemental DPS to weapon attack. Per Anson:

Quote:
Anyway, here's how it actually works: if a weapon does elemental damage, that bonus is adjusted by any percent modifiers active on the character (like "+3% Damage per Second to Fire Attacks"), and then it is finally boosted by any generic elemental bonuses ("+10 Damage per Second to Fire Attacks"). This is magical damage that is only applied when the weapon attack hits, and even if the weapon hits it can be resisted like any other magical damage (like damage from Fire Bolts).

I apologize for spreading confusion on this point, but there was some miscommunication internally regarding this. I hope this clarifies the whole thing once and for all...
One of Ulrich's pieces gives + poison dps to weaspon attack and some of my other items give + dPS to poison attacks - I buff all this during boss fights with Toxic Talent, which makes a noticeable difference, since it adds quite a bit of DPS to poison attacks.

Thanks to all for your answers. I do frequently check my character sheet to see my bonuses and resistances. So, if I understand correctly:

If a have a bow that does ice damage and I use a skill shot such as poison shot, IF the weapon hits, it will do physical damage and some poison and some ice damage, according to what was and was not resisted. If that's right, again thanks. If it's wrong, please let me know.

I'm really just trying to clarify as to whether I need to keep an offensive skill out of the left click box in order to take advantage of weapon's elemental damage.

It occurs to me that this really applies to all character types and I probably should have placed it in the Player Questions category. If someone in charge wants to move it there, please do.

The best example of this I can think of is fighting Abby using the Demon Sniper. I would hit for normal damage, but since Abby has good resist to shadow damage, most of my hit numbers would be accompanied by "resists."

I already know that. You're missing my point; where did you get the idea a random elemental bonus to normal weapon attacks stacks with your skill elemental DMG?

I don't know what you're aiming at TBH; DPS to normal attacks and DPS from skills work separately, never mixed up. Basically, you have two elemental DMG dealing factors (that work separately); your weapon and your skills.

That's where the confusion is coming from. I'm not saying the DS's shadow damage, for exmaple, stacks with the damage from skill shots; I'm saying (like you are sort of saying) that with a DS, if you use poison shot (or whatever) you will have 3 separate damage dealing components: physical damage, shadow damage, and poison damage.

EDIT: OK, after rereading my statement, I can see how you might think that's what I was saying, but that's not what I meant.

Does intellect increase the + elemental DPS to weapon attack? So if a bow had a +20 shadow bonus on weapon attack,if you added 5 intellect would that extra shadow damage increase to say,25?

I'm afraid I seem to be having an ongoing blonde moment over this. I do understand the answers and I do understand resistances, but my question is less complex.

Please suppose for a moment that I have equipped a bow that does x amt of fire DMG. Also assume that I have Poison Shot in my left button. An enemy appears and I shoot using the left mouse button.

We will further assume that my shot is not a miss and the enemy does not have fire or poison resistance.

Will this shot, having hit, do a certain amount of physical damage, fire damage from the weapon's bonus, and poison damage from the skill shot? Or, will the fire damage and physical damage be negated by the poison shot skill?

If I have a weapon with an amt of elemental DMG, must I keep an elemental skill shot out of either the left or right mouse button to get the benefit of the weapon's element damage? Thanks.

With an elemental bow/gun you do the base physical damage and the elemental damage, and if you skill shot you get the skill shot damage and the elemental damage from the weapon, along with the physical damage(50% sure).

If you add intel, you wont get a damage boost to the elemental weapon damage, but will get a boost to the poisonshot damage, or if you are a fighter soul rend works the same way.

Now if you use an elemental buff, or an armor or jewelry piece not only would that add to skill damage, i'm 99% sure that it adds to elemental damage from a weapon. For example you can use a Demon Sniper which adds shadow damage to weapon attack, if you use dark wizardy, it would add to that shadow damage.

Kind of a hard thing to test now, since we no longer see all the damage happening as its going on, the game lumps it up over time to mage total damage visible. Me thinks we needs a developer to come in and shed some light on this so we can be sure.

To BMF: yes, int increases all elemental damage, but the damage per point of intellect isn't 1 to 1, thankfully.

EDIT: Hmm...then again, now I'm not completely sure on the above.

and BB: that jambalaya is appreciated for each of its individual flavors by your enemy. So in your scenario, you would be dealing 3 separate types of damage, and each would be taken into account.

Int only increases skill damage. At a ratio of 1.5 points of damage per point of intellect(i think, maybe thats something else, i forget)

ah,I see now,thanks.
So adding intellect stats/items wouldnt increase a weapons extra elemental damage, but buffs and +damage stats on items do,as long as the damage stat matches the weapons elemental type.

Thank you, Cysira and Alienfighter. Your answers matched my question and I feel I have a better understanding of how it works now. It was hard to figure out because all damage to monsters shows in one color as a total.
