I've just seen...

Doomsday (2008)
Rating: 10
Genre: Action | Drama | Sci-Fi | Thriller
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0483607/
Director: Neil Marshall
Actors: Rhona Mitra, Bob Hoskins, Malcolm McDowell

IMDb info: A futuristic action thriller where a team of people work to prevent a disaster threatening the future of the human race.

I gotta say this is one of the cooler movies I've seen lately. First, as they talked about viruses affecting people, I thought it was another lame zombie-movie, but there were no zombies. It's a awesome mix of Mad Max and the Escape from New York which is a mix I've been waiting for something good as this for a long time to happen. Neil Marshall is one of those directors who does a movie every now and then, but when he does he makes sure it'll be a great one. The Descent (2005) and Dog Soldiers (2002) is both great movies and, as with this, he also wrote the script himself.
It's not often I give a movie 10 outta 10 but Doomsday really deserves it. If you like Mad Max or Escape from New York, you gotta grab a copy of this. You'll love it.

I wasn't a big fan of Descent, but I remember seeing the trailers for Doomsday and thinking it looked pretty good. If nothing else, I'll watch it just to look at Rhona Mitra!

Here's my pick: Children of Men

Director:Alfonso Cuarón

Writers (WGA):Alfonso Cuarón (screenplay) &
Timothy J. Sexton (screenplay)
Release Date:5 January 2007 (USA) more view trailer

Tagline:No children. No future. No hope. more

Plot:In 2027, in a chaotic world in which humans can no longer procreate, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea, where her child's birth may help scientists save the future of humankind.

It's set in England, stars Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, and an all around great cast (including Michael Caine). Fair warning: it's not a happy-time sunshine movie, but it's very powerful and the cinematography is captivating, Cuaron uses long takes and free-moving camera work to really immerse the audience. I higly recommend it!

Cool, been meaning to see that soon. Also, we're gonna watch Lost Boys 2 soon too, because I'm a great fan of the first one (dang I love the soundtrack) and I'm taking movies seriously and usually hate sequels, but I'm ready to give it a chance seeing as people on IMDb has given it 7.1/10.

Same with Donnie Darko 2. I can't believe they're going to make a sequel to that. As I said in another thread: "New actors, new director, new scriptwriter... Can it be good? NO! It's a single-type of movie, not a dang series."

Thanks LM, Doomsday is now on my list to see, really loved NM's Dog Soldiers,in the micro genre of werewolf movies it's one of the best.

Children of Men was fantastic too. I'll second that recommendation. A thoughtful and visually beautiful film.

Iv'e just seen...

In the theater, Hellboy 2 and Wanted. Loved the first HB and Del Toro does not disappoint in the sequel. If you are not into the comic book thing I highly recommend Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth. Visually stunning and a compelling story set during the Spanish Civil War. If you saw either of Timur Bekmembatov's brilliant films Nightwatch or Daywatch then Wanted is right up your alley. Once Wanted gets into high gear it is relentless, a perfect summer action movie.

But the one I'll recommend is just now out on dvd...

The Tracey Fragments (2008)
Rating: 10
Genre: Drama
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0801526/
Director: Bruce McDonald
Actors: Ellen Page

"One day, you fall for this boy.
And he touches you with his fingers,
and he burns holes in your skin with his mouth.
And it hurts when you look at him,
and it hurts when you don't.
And it feels like someone's cut you open with a jagged piece of glass.
Then you realize you've always felt this way." -Tracey Berkowitz

The Tracey Fragments is the new film from Canadian indie auteur Bruce McDonald(Highway 61, Hard Core Logo). It tells the story of fifteen year old Tracey Berkowitz. Tracey narrates her story while sitting at the back of a bus wearing nothing but a tattered shower curtain. She is looking for her nine year old brother Sonny who she has hypnotized into thinking he is a dog. Sonny has been missing for two days and a blizzard is coming. McDonald presents this narrative in a very non linear way. As a metaphor for the chaos going on in Tracey's head, he also fragments the screen into multiple and often repeating small images. This multi frame technique has been used before but not for the full length of the film. TTF was shot in 14 days on DV and then took 3 editors 5 months to complete. The non-liner story and the fragmented images make for a tough watch if you are not very cinematically adventurous. The real reason to see this though is the tiny juggernaut that is Ellen Page. She is one of the most skillful and brave young actors working in films. She dives right in to Tracey's often bleak world and builds an honest and three dimensional character. So if you are looking for a break from the summer popcorn flicks, try this brilliantly crafted and thought provoking indie.

Sounds interesting. Reading about the editing makes me think of Memento or 21 grams, although the non-linear structures of those films were not chaotic, by any means.

I've been impressed by Ellen Page in Hard Candy and Juno, so I'm not surprised to hear more praise.

I enjoyed the first Hellboy movie and the second one as well. Wanted was really good too; I always enjoy a good summer action flick and some of those stunts were just amazing.

I've just seen... The Dark Knight. I'm a huge fan of Christian Bale and would probably watch anything he has done at least once and when he did Batman Begins I added it to my list of his movies I like. The Dark Knight will join that list as well. Christian was wonderful, as always, but the scene stealer was of course Heath Ledger. He became the Joker, one of my favorite villains. While Batman is not my favorite comic hero, I still enjoy watching the films (well, most of them) and the cartoons dedicated to the caped crusader. I would definitely recommend this movie to those who enjoy the action/comic hero genre.

Lost Boys 2 : The Tribe (2008)
Rating: 3
Genre: Comedy | Horror | Thriller
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1031254/
Director: P.J. Pesce
Actors: Tad Hilgenbrink, Angus Sutherland, Autumn Reeser, Corey Feldman

IMDb tagline: Never grow old. Never die. Never know fear again.

No, no, no, no, noooo! I really tried to watch this movie with an open heart but it didn't help. This movie just plain sucked. It does NOT earn up to the honorable name of Lost Boys 2 just because they snatched one of the Sutherland kids (dang that Angus is a bad actor), made a cover on the awesome "Cry Little Sister"-song, and Corey Feldman should have stopped trying to act a long time ago. He were cool as a kid, that were a long time ago. In this movie he looks like he's 22 but acts like he's a 45-50 year old hardened vampireslayer... Or trying to I mean. Just because he's trying to sound like Kris Kristofferson doesn't make the role more believable at all.
And were did they get the "comedy" from as one of the genres? There weren't one single joke or funny thing in the whole movie. Having their first nudity just 10 minutes into the movie (only nudity) and vampires acting like adrenalin-junkie'd Triple-X (Vin Diesel) copies felt just like a cheep trick trying to get the audience from leaving.

Whatever you do: Don't watch this movie... There's only disappointments coming your way. This is the kinda movie you take your boy/girlfriend too if you're to much of a coward to dump them but want them to feel you have such a bad taste they'll never call you again.

Ninja Cheerleaders (2008)

Rating: 1
Genre: Comedy
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0972857/
Director: David Presley
Actors: Trishelle Cannatella, Ginny Weirick, Maitland McConnell, George Takei

IMDb plot: 3 college cheerleaders use their martial arts know-how to save their Sensei from mafia kidnappers, but must keep their extra curricular activities a secret in order to make it into an Ivy League school

Ok, this must be the worst movie I've ever seen... I friend dared me to try and watch it all and after viewing it I feel the obligation to warn you all not to watch it.
First off, it's really easy to see that they're trying to copy Charlie's Angels with their cut-scenes, but it just gets annoying just a couple of minutes in. And the movie is made up by cliché after cliché after cliché. Normally this can be fun if the movie is deliberately made bad as a parody, or fun low-budget version of another movie. But in this case it didn't work at all. I honestly almost lost the bet falling asleep several times during the movie and had to rewind it a bit.
Whatever you do: Don't watch this movie if you don't have a thing for anorexic bad actors who couldn't even fool a girl-scout they can't afford afford their cookies when they don't want to buy any.
And please... George Takei... How low have you sunk?

Kung Foo Panda

LOL, okay not the most intense movie out there. Nor is it a real conversation centerpiece. BUT both my 16yo sister and 9yo daughter were bouncing around like idiots just coming off of a serious sugar high afterwards, so... I have to admit for a childrens show it wasn't bad. There is enough there so that the parents who are stuck taking the offspring are in for a pleasant surprise.

No time for a full report but...

I just saw:
Wargames: The Dead Code (2008)

Ok, anyone remember the robotic voice saying "How about a nice game of chess?" Well, that's Joshua from the classic movie Wargames from 1983. This is the sequel (mostly independent, but not completely) to it and even though it's rated some 4,4 only on IMDb, I gotta say I think I give closer to a 6. It really weren't that bad as I thought it would be. Not sure your the kids of today will think though. This one's for us 'oldies' who remembers the original.

I've just (recently) seen...

1. The Dark Knight 10/10

It exceeded all my expectations, a whole new vision of the entire Batman concept put in the frame of reality...and it fits so perfectly. No silly gadgets or kiddie super hero action or wacky villains. Heath Ledger was just...amazing. I mean, his part was so extremely well played, to the point where everyone in the movies (me and my friends included) just waited for the Joker to make his appearance. He contradicts the old Joker who was basically just some bank-robbing clown. But this guy...just wants to spread chaos.

2. Hancock 9/10

It's an original super hero story. Will Smith is this drunk failure of a super hero. His powers resemble those of Superman, save for the X-ray/laser vision and ice breath. He's completely wreckless and irresponsible and the visual and sound effects are great. IMO, for such a great movie it was too short and there weren't any stereotypical super villain showdowns, but that actually contributes to the originality of the concept.

Yes i saw Hancock, it really is good. And it is original. Its not about a super hero who saves like everyone and everyonne loves him, ho does stop the villains, but destroys half of the city while doing it . Police chiefs comment on him is: we dont want your help! Stop it!"
And the people call him a**hole.
Didnt watch the black knight yet, but if you say its good, i guess i will.

Animated Star Wars Clone Wars.... it did not suck, however, the theatre did. Between the projectionist being 40 minutes late (resulting in free passes), no lights in the theatre and then, 90 seconds before the credits the projector turning off prompting folk to go yell at the manager (which did result in seeing the last 90 seconds and a refund), it was pretty okay Good matinee, but not worth a regular showing at $10+
