Server Downtime and Patch Notes 12/5 (ver .42)
#9103 - 12/01/06 07:39 PM

The server will be brought down on Tuesday, December 5th @ 9:00am CDT to apply this update. Expected downtime is approximately 2 hours.

Version 42 is a major update to the game. As such, it requires that we erase all characters. Sorry about that!

UI Changes

The map has been totally revamped. There is now a mini-map that is always visible in the upper-right corner of the screen. This new map no longer rotates. The mini-map includes two buttons for controlling zoom.

A new help system has been added to the game. Until a player reaches level 5, the game will show the help menu automatically when logging in. Press F1 to open the help menu at any time. Click on the help menu entries to read more about how to play the game.

The experience bar has been given an overhaul. You will now notice a red monster named Karl in the lower-left corner of the screen. He’s holding a sign that tells you how many points you have left to gain a level. His sign also fills up with color as you make progress.

When your character levels up, a new “+” icon will be displayed to the right of Karl. It will blink for about 30 seconds from time to time. Click on this icon to open your character sheet and spend your attribute points.

A new status text display has been added above the skill bar. This currently tells you to “Press F1 for help!” We will be adding more information to this location later.

The old grouping dialog has been replaced with a more useful social window. A button has been added to the lower-right corner of the screen that allows you to access this new screen. There are three tabs on this new screen: Friends, Ignore and Who. A friends list has been added to the game. Right-click on another player’s name and select “Add As Friend” to add them to your friends list. You can easily see your friends from the “Friends” tab on the social window. You can also ignore other players in the game through the same right-click interface. The “Who” tab of this new dialog shows all of the players on the server, including level and location. Use this to help find people that you want to play with.

The group management interface has been moved to the right-click context menu on your character status found in the upper-left corner of the screen.

Quest status text and zone change display information has been moved to the right side of the screen, just below the mini-map. This should clear your view when lots of quest progress is being made.

A new item color for quest-related items has been added to the game. This is a light blue color.

You can now left-click on someone’s name in the chat window to send a private message to them.

Potions will no longer be drinkable via hotkey when your health or mana is full.

Zoom controls have been improved for the game. You can now zoom in closer. You can also zoom out further. The default zoom has been brought in a bit closer than before.

All windows in the game have been given an overhaul for font use and readability.

Obelisks are now accessible with a single click.

When selecting a player, you can now right-click on the selection indicator in the upper-middle of the screen. This will provide a context menu for you to perform actions on the selected player.

The key mapping system has been improved. This improvement is mostly internal. However, you will notice that any custom key mapping you have will be erased with this version. Please remap your keys again.

Point and click movement has been improved to detect situations where clicking near a wall would cause your character to run in the wrong direction.

A full screen map has been added to the game. Press TAB to view this map.

Divine damage resistance display has been added to the character screen.

Tooltips for monsters have been changed to better reflect the difficulty of a monster. Monsters that give no points will have a gray name. Monsters have also been given more rankings based on their difficulty. Very easy monsters are shown as "(Fodder)". Normal monsters are shown as "(Normal)". The remaining ranks, in increasing difficulty, are: "(Champion)", "(Hero)" and "(Boss)".

The highlight behind items in your inventory will now be colored red only when they cannot be used by your character.

Minor potions are now used before major potions when clicking on the hot bar or using hotkeys.

Quest Changes

Roughly 50 quests have been added to the game. The majority of these quests are found in the tutorial area, town and the first two dungeons off of town.

Quest-related interactive objects on the ground are no longer clickable if you are not on the quest.

Quests no longer grant experience.

Quest cash rewards have been given an overhaul. They are much more rewarding now than before.

A new quest token system has been added to the game. You will notice that some quests show “X King’s Coins” in their reward text. When you complete these quests, you will receive King’s Coins. You can redeem these coins in town to receive random loot of your choice.

Quest drops are now Soulbound and Not Sellable by default.

Quests can now give the player an item when they are accepted.

Repeatable quests are now supported.

Quests may be limited to particular character classes now.

Members-Only Features

A bank has been added to the game. This bank is accessible to members only. You can find this bank near the entrance to the Horrific Dungeon of Legend. Feel free to store your extra equipment in this bank as long as you like.

Major Potions have been reclassified as members-only. They also stack up to five at a time and have been given a new icon.

Game Balance Changes

The resistance mechanics have been given an overhaul. Resistance is no longer expressed as a flat percentage. Instead, it is a numerical value more related to Attack and Defense Rating. The higher your resistance, the better your chance to resist damage. The higher your level, the higher your resistance needs to be to remain competitive. When someone resists damage, all the damage is avoided and a yellow “Resist” shows above their head. Enemies that are more than five levels above you get a significant bonus to all resistances.

The hit/miss mechanics have been modified to take level difference into account. Attacking something that is higher level will be much harder to hit. Attacking something that is lower level will be much easier to hit.

All loot in the game has been rebalanced and reworked to improve playability. The full description of these changes is beyond the scope of this list. However, let it be known that every single item in the game has been reworked.

Skills and skill books are now limited based on level. That is, you must achieve an appropriate level in the game before you can learn new skills. The required level is shown in the tooltip for the skills and skill books.

The Summon Wolf skill has been removed from the game until we can give more appropriate support skills for it. Our goal is to making summoning a more viable skill set for the game.

The aggro mechanics have been reworked to make it less likely that multiple monster groups will attack you at the same time.

The way potions are bought and sold has been changed. All potions increase their purchase price as you level up. Also, all potions may be sold back to any merchant for 25 gold.

A soul binding mechanic has been added to the game. Soulbound items may be dropped, but are always tagged as belonging to their owner. As such, these items may not be given away to other players.

Creature balance has been revisited to improve the playability of the game.

Loot drops have been increased in many instances. This will improve the chances that you can find rare loot that suits your play style.

All new characters start with basic equipment.

The experience required to gain levels has been totally revamped. The number of points required to gain a level is shown in the sign that Karl is holding. Each “normal” monster is worth 5 points (i.e. a monster at your level that isn’t too weak or strong). Grouping with high level players will no longer provide a tremendous amount of experience. The time to level should be much more stable now.

All resistance skills have been reworked to provide better resistances for your level.

All mastery skills have been changed to provide bonuses to damage instead of modifiers.

All boss monsters have been rebalanced to provide more of a challenge.

The amount of time it takes to get from level one to five has been reduced.

Major potions now drop more frequently.

Loot drops in the Horrific Dungeon of Legend have been improved.

World Design Changes

Some side dungeons have had appropriate boss creatures placed within.

A new teleport object has been added to the end of each major dungeon. This object, when clicked on, teleports your character to the next dungeon.

Special loot rooms have been added to many boss encounters. After killing the boss, the loot room will open up and give you access to some neat stuff.

Audio Changes

More music has been added to the game.

More NPCs have been given voiceovers.

Positional audio playback has been improved. It no longer plays based on the facing of the camera, but the facing of your character.

Many spells and creatures have had their sound effects improved.

New sounds have been added for accepting, abandoning and completing quests.

Graphics Changes

The graphics engine has been enhanced to support lower-end hardware. The game should be playable on DirectX 8 cards as well as DirectX 9 cards. There is a known issue with certain graphics cards that cause the game to act improperly. If this issue is encountered, you can add "Pipeline = VFPF" to your User.cfg file under the [Display] section.

Proper graphics card capabilities are detected on startup. The game will tell you if your card does not meet the minimum requirements for play.

Artwork Additions

Several new hairstyles and faces have been added to the game.

A few new armor pieces have also been added.
