Please dispel these myths
#72875 - 08/07/08 11:09 AM

I have heard the following myths while farming in groups and wasn't sure if they were true. Just to throw in a literary reference: "Call it a lie if you like. But a lie is a sort of a myth, and a myth is a sort of a truth..." Cyrano De Bergerac by Edmond Rostand.

1) You should gather all of the mobs and champions into one place, kill them all and THEN have your bling gnome convert treasure into gold. The myth part: There is a higher chance of the gnome dropping a rainbow based on the total value of the treasure they are converting.

2) The 'highest level' player in a group should open the treasure chests (told to me to be at the end of a boss' gate) because the loot will be greater.

3) The faster you kill the boss, the greater the likelihood of getting a rainbow (told to me to ignore everyone else and kill the boss first).

I'm pretty sure (and told all three players who reported this to me at the time) that they are full of it but was hoping some developer could just give their astonished chuckle of dismay at these rumors...

False. For each item the Bling Gnome consumes, you get one roll. Whether the Bling Gnome consumes all of them at once, or over the course of five meals, it's still one roll per item.

False. The leader's level, not the level of the person opening the chest, is used to determine loot.

False. We don't track that at all. The faster you kill everything you intend to kill and reset the instance (assuming you're farming), the more times you can do a run in the same amount of time, thus increasing your overall chances of getting a rainbow in the given time... but it doesn't improve your chances on any given run.

Hope that helps.

Woops I thought that the gnome did have more of a chance when more was down could have swore that was in patch notes or stephen notes something liek that******

Myth two) Heard this as well. I have never seen it proved the lvl of the chests should be relative to the leader of the group not to who opens it.

Myth three) Completly false the game could care less if the boss falls in 5 seconds or in 30 seconds. it only cares that it falls. Now to give that myth a little help you kill boss X every 5 seconds vs someone who kills him ever 30 seconds you will get more rbs because of more kills not because of the speed of your kills.

Great info Anson, especially about the Bling Gnome. I think most players had that one wrong.

I was wrong, I misremembered the code in question. Each time the Bling Gnome converts items, there is one roll based on the number of items, and the chances for that roll do indeed go up the more items there are. If you convert five items at once, your chances are indeed better than if you convert one item five times. However, the total gold value of the converted items plays no part in this - it's just the number of items.

That would lead me to another area that I've heard conflicting things about...just in the conversion, no other factors, does the Bling Gnome give the same value for items that a merchant does?

lol, just as I thought then.

Lyllia, no, he gives a little less. Not sure how much % less though but it's really not that much. You have to take in consideration that you'll get money for loot you'd never pick up and sell otherwise too.

That's why I added the part about no other factors. Before my gnome I picked up everything and would die or scroll back to town to sell my stuff then come back...thus wasting way more time that could be spent beating monsters up

Hahaha, yeah. You're actually the first I've heard of picking up every little thing to sell. Didn't see that "no other factor"-thing, been a loooong day.

So.. if any Dev wanna jump in: About how much % difference is there from the gold you'll get from the Gnome and the gold you'll get in Town?
