Picking a neat name
vB post 132479 - 08/05/08 09:34 PM

So, picking a name in Dungeon Runners is... baffling, to say the least. There are a number of things limiting my options-

1) Name can't be serious. I mean, come on! Serious? This game? Not happening.
2) Name can't relate to your class. Well, it could, but not if you wanted to use the other skills. I'm not willing to end up as SwordGirl, the Bright Squeaky Obsidian Mage Who Picked Her Name Poorly.
3) Not much encouraging of alts. So I'd better like the name a lot- it's not like I'll be making lots of different characters. Of course, this applies to everyone, and so it should mean that there are plenty of choices for names. But..
4) All the names are.. taken? This is weird- My standard army of Online Fantasy Game Names I Like are all taken. All of them. Which is rather weird, because it's not like each account has ten characters on it. And the game hasn't been out for a particularly long time. The main things contributing to Name Shortage are that accounts aren't deleted (as far as I know), and that it's.. free? That wouldn't even have a big impact on name availability.

So anyway, Even with going through most easily pronouncable names made by mashing four or five nice letters together, I got nothing. I'm using TockTock at the moment for some reason. After an eternity of seeing "Name Already In Use", even that sounded good.
Little help? XD

Two ideas that have worked for me, uh... for better or worse...

1. Pick a name in another language; or
2. Let your small child pick a name for you.

I can't believe I didn't think of that. That's how I named my cats, after all... (Tache and Plouf- French for Spot and Splash)

And you always have the "funny spelling" method to fall back on. You want Gangrel but it is taken? Try Gangrele, Gyngrel, Gaingrel, etc.

And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,
And the lamplight o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted — nevermore!

I usually use that, and over time I've come to like my funny-spelled names.. but those are taken too. >_<

Well, failing any other ideas, I'm picking Souci for now. Roughly translates into "Trouble".
No, wait, I'm looking for synonyms and funky-spellings of blue.
No, wait, I'm indecisive.

*head explodes*

I got really lucky that no one had thought about using my In-Game name before I got it as I have not been around since day 1 (close to it but not really THAT close)and it should have been taken up with a quickness like all the good names usually are..

Guess there's not THAT MANY HP Lovecraft fans in da house...

Yeah, I tried Blue, Bleu, Bloo, Blou, and a couple other variations that pronounce the same way. All taken. Still scratching head. @_@
I'm sure I'll think a something nifty.

Have you considered that having a "serious" name in Dungeon Runners just makes it funnier? Everyone needs a straight man, after all. And having a mismatched name is just as funny. Like, having a huge muscle bound guy named "Bubbles". Or a tiny little girl named "Bloodbath McDeathsalot".

Thats genious! Specially the litle girl part!
Noticed someone mentioned onther languiges, well, i did that!
Also try making something that looks like something: if you cant do something with "l" try it with "I", works in some games, doesnt in other. Not sure for DR....

--------------------
There's a thin line between genious, and crazy. I'm nowhere near that line, i'm way in the crazy zone!

There are of course also the various shades of blue. Try alternate spellings of Azure, Teal, Indigo, for example. Or try words for blue things, such as Sky or Ocean (or Eyes?).

I must have been lucky, I guess. I have Khazandra as my in-game name, and a level 1 Ranger and a Mage that I have never played yet, I just created them to grab the names. They also have Kh in stead of K or C in the name, and z instead of s, and I didn't have any problems with names already taken at all.

Khaz: W4 Laker Girl
Khaz of Shadow and Flame
An earthquake's sound, to a girl's guitar, is just another good vibration.

Which reminds me of my main Guild Wars character- An Eyeball

Anyway, I ended up succumbing to putting three vowels in a row, so I am now Bloue, the mildly retarded Level 9 who can't focus on one playstyle.
Thanks for the feedback, all!

I often take a really normal word in my native tongue, swedish, and use that since those sound exotic for others. Like Kranvatten who means Tapwater, Bokhylla - bookshelves. Tomburk - empty can, and so on.

Ah, the "Never ending story"-method.

The Childlike Empress: Bastian. Why don't you do what you dream, Bastian?
Bastian: But I can't, I have to keep my feet on the ground!
The Childlike Empress: Call my name. Bastian, please! Save us!
Bastian: All right! I'll do it! I'll save you! I will do what I dream!
[Climbs to the window and yells out in the storm]
Bastian: MOONCHILD!
