Official Thread: Installation Confusion?
vB post 132411 - 08/05/08 12:16 PM

Hello everyone,

Now for some of you this may be awhile back. For others, this may have been a semi-recent event. Thinking back....did you have any installation problems?
Was the process confusing, and if so, at what stage?
Is there anything we could clarify to make the DR installation process a tad bit easier?
Did you experience some problems? Did you require assistance?
At any point in the DR installation process did you tell yourself 'maybe this isn't worth the hassle?'

We want to make getting the game (and getting an account) as easy as possible. Keep in mind there's a lot of legal stuff we gotta keep, but we want to know what YOU guys think.

This is not a complaint, just a quick thanks: When my first connection attempt ran head-first into my router's firewall, the NC Launcher gave me a link to a support article that told me exactly which router ports to open.

Nearly every other MMO I have tried has forced me to email tech support, wait around 24 hours, and then I received an email that inevitably was lacking in information and I ended up spending a few hours on Google trying to find port numbers and protocols anyway.

Whatever other changes you make, please don't remove that feature.

I get surprised every time I hear about people who had problems installing. We've installed in several different ways:
1. From the DVD directly.
2. On Vista behind both a router and switch (yes, 2 hardwares).
3. As above, but XP.
4. On Vista behind only a router.

What I haven't tried though is to download from the PlayNC Launcher where I've heard some had problems with.

I didn't have any trouble installing it on my computer. i downloaded it a few days before I decided to purchase it from BestBuy. I installed it while using Vista, and behind like 900 firewalls (not really that many, but running Norton 360, SpySweeper, SpyBot, Defender and using a Linksys router...and yeah, i know I have some slight redundancies going on, but it's all good ). I didn't change any settings/permissions either. i wish more things installed as painlessly.

I've never had issues installing the software. I've installed it from scratch on at least 3 machines and have performed a clean copy installation with zero problems, too.

That being said, I think there are impediments for some people:

1) Vista users with default non-admin accounts - perhaps there could be a splash screen that detects permissions prior to an installation that will ultimately fail?

2) People without the correct version of .net Framework isntalled (2.0 is required by the launcher).

3) Some other combination of permissions and .net problems...

Also, I would love to see an install for DR using something like MojoPac! I think it would a fantastic promotional item to be able to give away a fully installed version of DR (or any other NCSoft game) on a USB 2.0 device. Talk about plug-and-play! As long as the user is logged in with adminstrator rights on the host XP machine, he or she can instantly play from MojoPac with nothing to install...

And don't forget:

4. Pirated/cracked copy of OS that as a result either is missing vital updates, registry entries, or just general functionality

Oh, didn't even see that myself. Thanks! ^^

Btw, added to my above mentioned installations: We've installed the PTS a couple of times here too without any problems.

I never had any problems actually installing, but downloading was somewhat redundant, for the regular link on the web page you down load a downloader thingy. Small file downloads 3 megs or so i think, and then that in turn downloads the actual exe file, which i thought was a little silly. But that could be some legal thing, because a couple other free mmo's i downloaded and played did similar things.

No problems here, that I can recall. Quick and uneventful is all I can remember about it.

For whatever its worth, I realized just how painless the DR install was when a friend recommended I try Perfect World. What a nightmare that was. 2+ gigs of dl, presumably from another continent, because it took the better part of a full day. And so not worth the effort. The uninstall took longer than the amount of time I was willing to play.

Installation went very smoothly for me (using the PlayNC launcher), but once I closed the launcher, I couldn't get back- Trying to start DR or the NCLauncher made a really big error window pop up, and the original Setup application from the Secure NC dealie refused to do anything. After deleting it from program files and everywhere else I could find, and re-downloading the Setup app, I was able to install and play again successfully.

Why? I don't know. I'll screenshot the error when I get it again- shutting down the computer will probably cause it.

Using Vista, on an Admin login, making sure to run everything as Administrator (because nothing ever works otherwise. Hate.. Vista.. ). System requirements just fine, disk space- plenty. Little processes that might mess with data after closing it- Less than Vista even comes installed with.

*shrugs*
