Shields, am I wasting my time?
#69843 - 07/23/08 06:22 PM

My warrior is lvl 27 and I've been using a shield as soon as one had dropped for me in dew valley. I am beginning to question the usefulness of a shield, however. I do have the passive I'm rubber you're screwed, but it doesn't seem to help that much as block chance is at 7% for shields of my level. I understand that shields in later levels are as high as 20% I believe, but even that seems somewhat low to me.

I tend to think that besides missing out on extra defense and resistance there is not much else that would be missed as far as stats when using another weapon instead of the shield. Another thing that makes me wonder is that I usually see dual wield and two hand fighters and a very small amount of shield users...mostly I see the mages with shields anyhow. Are there any shield users out there that can answer some of the doubts I'm having on whether or not to switch?

I use a shield on my mage, but not on my warrior.

warriors have a lot of def. rating from everything else, you might as well use the two weapon slots for weapons.

I alternate between dual wield and 1-hander with shield. For boss runs, I equip the shield, for dungeons I go for all-out damage. The shield seems to keep me alive a lot longer, especially when the boss has a gazillion of henchmen attacking me. Yes Algor, I'm looking at you!

Khaz has the right idea if the bosses are slamming you.

But I think most fighters eventually end up with a higher defense rating than is really needed (but still need to worry about elemental damage, mind you). At that point, you don't want to waste a hand on any more mundane defense -- use it for a weapon (that hopefully offers some additional elemental protection).

Then the only question becomes dual wield or a 2 hander...

I agree with what's been posted here previously. If I'm running through a dungeon I use my 2-handed weapon. If I'm boss smooshing I usually grab some friends and use my shield.

I have been experimenting with various setups, one handed with shield, dual wield and two handed wearing warrior armour, ranger armour, mage armour and nakkid.

The difference between the setups was meh. But my favourite was one handed with shield using Dark Contraption and It's Rubber and I'm Screwed.

I am glad of this cause now I will use equipment that matches my eyes from now on.

I went with that until PvP'ers ranted on about the advantage fighters got with that and the Devs lowered the effects. I think it's rather useless in PvE now. Better to use 2 1-handers or a 2-hander IMO.

I find them all to be pretty much of a muchness. I like using Dark Contraption cause of the nice glowly effect on the sword when it is active and I like the sound made when a knock back occurs.

I experimented with that for awhile. Dual wield had better results against Abby. And a two hander (with awesome cleavage) worked best for dense mobs.

If you use 1h and shield you have to use DC, or you're wasting your time.

I looked into it, and noticed that with DC shields rule! You go berserk killing with crazy attack speed!
But without DC, it isnt verry good.... I think people already wrote this, did they?
Aniway, i wrote my opinion.
