How to keep DR from lagging?
#69353 - 07/22/08 01:43 PM

Hi, I'm new to DR and I love it so far when it actually plays for me. I have the graphics on all the lowest settings, but the game still lags for me. Is there anything I can do to make the game run smoothly?

It's lagging like you are running in place? casting/attacking and nothing happens? Then all of a sudden you are moving again or have unleashed a bunch of spells/attacks?

If you answered 'yes', it's more than likely not your computer/video card/settings and it's the game server lagging.

yeah, I run in place and the game just locks up for a bit when I run into a mob, then it unfreezes and I'm dead. This is making the game a little bit unplayable.

Make sure AntiAlias is at the lowest in your graphics-settings

Please list your system specs:

  • Operating System (XP and Vista are the two most common)
  • Amount of memory (2GB, for example)
  • HD space avaialble (3GB free on a 20GB drive, for example)
  • Graphics card (Nvidia 7900 GS, for example

Also, how do you connect to the internet and at what speeds?

  • Dial Up
  • Cable Modem
  • DSL
  • FIOS
  • Satellite
  • Wireless Air Card (from cell companies like Verizon)
  • High speed line-of-sight radio antenna (ISPs like Digis)

There's also several things you can do to ensure your system is as optimized for gaming as you can:

* Defrag your hard drive - try Auslogics Disk Defrag (free)

* Make sure as few process and applications are running in your system tray and in the background as possible. Hands down, this is the biggest problem I see with peoples machines. Every thing running in your system tray takes resources (some, quite a bit) and if they load during system startup, they cause your computer to boot that much slower. Personally, I use a tool called Ace Utilities. It's a commercial utility with a free 30 day trial (~$30 for a lifetime license good for 2 computers), but it has one of the best and easiest to use start up managers I've ever seen (that's a screen shot of what I disabled from running on a machine for which I didn't do a clean install of the OS - look at all those processes I stopped from running!). It'll also remove junk files, temp files, clean your registry (it does this very well, btw - I've never had problems with it). A good free junk file cleaner is CCleaner (stands for crap cleaner).

* Do a thorough virus scan and make sure you have good AV and firewall software (personally, I use a combo of NOD32 Antivirus (commercial product with a free 30 day trial, one of the best AV solutions there is, per AV-Comparatives and Comodo Firewall Pro (free for life).

* Make sure your system is thoroughly updated with all the latest Microsoft patches/services packs (XP is up to SP3 now).

* Make sure you have the best drivers for your graphics solution - these aren't always the newest, so google will be your friend.

Just for because...

Vista Business SP1 (with everything disabled when playing games)
4GB (4 x 1GB)
18GB left on a 16GB 10K RPM drive
EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB

Cable connection

Running nothing but the game, all non-essential background programs have been disabled, not even running music through my PC and I still get lag a couple times during the course of playing for a few hours. So...server issues :P

Occasional lag spikes do happen and I believe the devs have identified an issue since the last patch (other than the influx of new players). Also, Vista isn't officially supported. It does seem to work better in Windowed Mode, however, so you could try that to see if it helps.

That still doesn't necessarily mean that there are server issues. The reality is there are a ton of places between you and the servers that might cause trouble, starting with your pc, your router, your network, your isp, the nodes and infrastructure between your isp and the servers, etc.. There is, of course, the distinct possibility that there is a problem with the servers, but if the issue was more global, I think there'd be more outcry. I seem to suffer from more lags pikes than I did before, but I don't think I could really quantify them since they still aren't often enough to disrupt my play.

Also, arguments like "I can still access the internet" are relatively moot. If you're suffering occasional packet loss (which would cause lag spikes in game or even disconnects), you wouldn't necessarily notice this while surfing the internet. You could still connect, but a page might load a little more slowly or, if you're simply scrolling up and down a page to read it, you wouldn't notice it at all. Packet loss can be very difficult to identify.

That being said, the OP seems to be suffering from pervasive issues which indicate something other than server problems, at least for him.

Oh yeah, I play windowed mode, forgot to mention that as an idea...or just comment on it. Mainly because the game crashed after about 3 seconds while in full screen. I have a 22" Samsung so having a 1/4" bar on the left and right that my desktop shows on is no big deal.

I'm guessing that if the 'lag' issue on the server end was resolved with the last patch that it was a lot worse?

The last patch was just to fix a crash associated to the bling gnome. Per Crickette,

Quote:

Thanks for the support tickets, guys - please keep sending them in if you haven't already. We do have at least one outstanding issue that is causing problems, but note that we don't know who is affected by what. It's always possible that your issue may really be related something else. So if you haven't submitted a ticket please continue to do so.

Also know that our tech guys will always try to fix other issues as they go. It is their job to make sure everyone has updated drivers so we can help avoid any other issues that may hit you later. I hope everyone finds them to be as courteous and as helpful as I have.

The gnome crash issue was huge (players using the gnome at the same time would get unhandled exceptions - it forced me to hard boot my system every time it happened). I'm glad it's fixed.

There's an outstanding synch issue that causes instances to reset and group members to be disconnected. They're still tracking that down, I believe. I don't know if that's the issue Crickette refers to or something else.

If it's not, they should not have listed it under the system requirements on the retail box.

No offense to any devs reading this post, but since you listed Vista on the game packaging, I really hope you're officially supporting it by now, and if not, I strongly suggest you start doing so.

No, I've never had problems running DR in Vista.

I'm looking at this post going...Newegg sells them. Then I realized my mistake...I have 18GB on a 36GB drive, not 16GB lol. I'd blame it on my blondeness, but I dyed my hair medium brown. It's the chemicals leeching into my brain!!!!!!!!

I want to get another one (also want to try one of the SSD, but read that they don't work well with Vista currently...oh and they are wicked expensive) and thinking of the Raptor X...the one with the clear piece in the case. Are you using that one or the regular one? Just curious if you noticed any difference with noise. I've read a bunch about them saying they are noisy which I find weird because everyone said that about the 10000 RPM drives to begin with and I don't hear mine at all.

Way to burst my bubble! It's always a dangerous assumption to make, but, since I didn't know the connection, I thought the "mama" made it a safe bet.

Well, now I know, anyway.

That's why my "storage" drive is a 7200 RPM drive. It's for storing things that don't need a speed boost. I think that SSDs will come down in price sooner than later. Look at other media of the same nature and how rapidly the price has come down. The price will come down even further when optical media goes away and everything is sold on flash memory (music, movies, games, etc.).

So if someone refers to another someone as their B***h, do you automatically assume that the other someone is a female or a dog?

Depends , but if my forum name were "Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam," I wouldn't blame someone if they assumed I were female instead of realizing that it is a character name from a novel.

LOL!!

And when they do drop in price my system will be uber-sweet. SSD boot drive, and a terabyte storage drive. Oh, the joy and glory....

Pardon me while I drool dreamily.
