Whoa! are the Technically-Challneged
#68531 - 07/18/08 04:13 AM

So I've been working on this friggin video...

All of the video was captured using Fraps in .avi format.
I used Presto! Videoworks6 for editing/producing.
I have tried divX, Xvid, and newsoft codecs, none of which were accpeted by Youtube.

I then used MPEG4 direct maker to convert the video, which finally was downloaded AND processed in about 5 minutes, as opposed to the hours and hours I wasted trying to get it through Youtube's processing with the other formats.

The problem is that the video quality sucks ace through a straw and is hardly worth broadcasting, although the video before conversion looks great.

*throws an imaginary bundle of papers dramatically into the air*

I'd most likely be better off posting this later when I'm in a better mood, but I'm pissed at the moment.

YouTube accepts a wide range of video file formats such as .WMV, .AVI, .MOV, and .MPG. Here are a few things that may work well for you:

* MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format
* MP3 audio
* Video resolution: 480x360 or higher
* Frame Rate: 24fps or higher

(From the YouTube Help Center)

Also, there's usually a "watch in high quality" link directly below the movie.

Yeah, I've been through their help center and the forums, and it seems, from reading forum posts, that the requirements for getting the "watch in high quality" button are indeterminate.

I'm not sure how I encoded mine (long ago and first try) but it's a 680x496px .divx at 25fps. I got the higher quality thing on mine.

Well, Hypercam is only e screen-capturer and for that Fraps is way better. It's wich format and such he'll make it after editing he has a problem with. As had I, must I add.

I've uploaded 2 different Abaddon videos to YouTube. The first I took with GameCam (free version). The quality sucked before conversion and upload and its even worse afterwards. Btw the uploaded file was 640x480 at a 1012kbps bitrate.

My second video, however, was much more successful. I took it with FRAPS (free version) and saved the movie file (after playing with it in Windows Movie Maker) as 856 X 480 at a 3898kbps bitrate (called "High Quality(Large) in Windows Movie Maker). It looks great in youtube and lets viewers select between normal and high quality. Just remember to delete the original .avi file, once you've edited and compressed a copy, since the original will be freakin' huge.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get the original .avi file over to WMovie maker from Presto!, but I 'produced a produced' version of the video in WMM using the highest settings (you weren't lying about the resulting file size) and compressed it again with the MP4(DivX) codec.

The video still lost some quality and it picked up a little popping in the audio, but it's not bad...now to see if it clears Youtube's processing.

Thanks for the help.

EDIT: in the future I think I'll start with WMM. That Presto! v.6 is pretty buggy, at least with Vista- kept crashing.
