Cowbell complaint
#68467 - 07/17/08 09:39 PM |
I amassed 15 minutes of cowbell, and was looking forward to earning some xp while I ran for Sam... first mob out, I had lagdeath and lost all that cowbell. What's up with that? Why cancel cowbell upon death, especially these days when lag is as likely as not to cause death? That torques my balzack, is what I'm saying, and the dev who thought it would be a good idea should have to wear Balzack's Insipid Festering Tea Bag of Taint for a month in penance. |

Don't think of losing it as a penalty for dying. Think of keeping it as a bonus for surviving! |

I think there should be some penalty for death. At this point, there is nothing worse than Summoning Sickness from HDoL. However, there is no way for the system to recognize whether one dies from lag or lack of potions or overwhelmed in combat. It is easy enough to earn back the lost cowbell. -------------------- And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming, And the lamplight o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor; And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor Shall be lifted — nevermore! |

Ya know, instead of building up the time while trying to hold onto a somewhat insignificant 15% bonus...I always thought it would be better to keep the duration static (reasonably 10-15 minutes) and boost the bonus by 5% each time. I'd rather make a mad rush with a 35% bonus than to be carefully creeping along with the standard 15% for 30+ minutes. -Mastese |

Quote: I always hated the loss of exp (that might drop you a level by the way, and now half your gear won't work), the reduced stats, the corpse runs to get back to where my toon and equipment is, whenever I got killed. Granted, death should perhaps be a bitof a disadvantage, but I dislike the death penalties that make it difficult or near-impossible to keep playing, unless I wait 15-20 minutes for the penalties to wear off first. Especially with the lag situation being what it is on the servers right now. -------------------- Khaz: W4 Laker Girl An earthquake's sound, to a girl's guitar, is just another good vibration. |

All things being equal, I'd agree with you. I don't die unless assisted by lag (or big boss). But the fact is that lag has increased since the box came out -- the serious, Won't Recognize a Command for 20-30 Seconds, Guaranteed to Kill Your [censored] (tm) type lag, even. I shouldn't have to earn back cowbell. And I realize we're just talking about a game; I don't want to overreact. So let me just say with a tempered mien: the idea sucks nuggets, and so does anyone who agrees with it. |

It would be cool if we only lost 1 cowbell upon dying though, so they all didn't disappear. -------------------- May The Rainbows Drop As Cows From The Sky HDoL.eu - Horrific Domain of Legend - A Dungeon Runners Fansite |

I'd like to get cowbell tokens that I can turn in to amass cowbell durations when _I_ want it ![]() And to buy cowbell with KCs and cash. |

Would "Death Penalties" start to push the game away from the "casual" side of the "casual gamer" moniker associated with Dungeon Runners? Instead, how about a random buff/debuff for dying? Like you die 10 times in a row to the Snow Chief because you're a stupid and stubborn little magess that just stands there throwing off fireballs. You get a buff that says "We feel sorry that you suck so bad, here's 50 to your armor rating". Or a debuff that is cosmetic...A stubborn little magess isn't paying attention after defeating a legion of poison rats and stands there in the cloud, basking in the glory of pulling a victory out of her gnomes butt. She doesn't realize that she's nearly dead and dies from standing in the cloud. Upon resurrection, the magess is green looking and a putrid cloud follows her around like a big scarlet A. ![]() -------------------- Lyllia the *insert whatever adjectives the game feels like displaying at this time* Magess. |

Quote: wow why so hostile? Mages do damage with those fireballs. Anyway, I think the "random buff" upon death idea is kinda stupid. I mean, even if it is random, people are going to be sitting there, going to difficult areas and dying over and over again just to try to get some certain death buff. What a waste of time. Dying is a bad thing, you shouldn't be rewarded for it. That'll make people WANT to die. Random Death De-Buffs FTW. |

Quote:Quote: You're being a little hypocritical. You comment on another player being hostile then call my idea stupid and a waste of time? How is that not hostile of you? As for players wanting to die, DR is different than other games. Why not turn conventional death penalty mechanics on their head? For somebody who calls the game "brilliant", you seem oddly opposed to a fairly detailed and well-presented idea that seems in line with Dungeon Runners' style and sense of humor. |

You mis-understood, I'm not saying the idea sucks, I think it's a rather good idea. And I said she's being hostile because she was kind of saying that mages are worthless and stupid. I just think it would be kind of pointless to have something good happen to you when you die. what is the point in that? "Yes! I died! I just got a strength bonus! Hey guys, go die so you can get something good too!" I mean [censored]? What kind of game gives you a bonus when you die? Don't get me wrong man, your idea of a random death penalty is good, but you gotta remember, it's a PENALTY. I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm just saying that if that's implemented into the game, I can just see people going into hard areas, dying over and over to get some random bonus. THAT would be a waste of time. Thats why it should be a death penalty not death bonus. I'm all for special things that happen to you when you die, just not good ones. |

Well, then you clearly haven't done the Shadow's Embrace quests yet. There rewards there you can only get if you die. |

Quote: I'm not sure I like the idea of a buff upon death... unless it is offset by a penalty for another stat. You get a 50 bonus to armor rating, but lose a lot of attack speed, for example. And I LOVE the cosmetic debuff idea! -------------------- Khaz: W4 Laker Girl An earthquake's sound, to a girl's guitar, is just another good vibration. |

Quote: First, I'm not a man. Second, You misunderstood (as I just posted in another reply)...I never said mages were worthless and stupid, I gave an example of what I do and what people have told me I am for what I do...my bad for not making it more clear. Third, the same can be said for a game that doesn't give a death penalty at all? In DR you don't get damaged gear, can go right back into battle, don't lose exp...you start at half health and mana which if you wait 3 seconds you are at full again anyway. Not having a penalty is technically a bonus if you think about it. Forth, I'm not suggesting a "bonus" death penalty upon dying...I'm suggesting a random death penalty that there could be a positive versus a negative. "The deities of the realm take pity on you because you suck." and there's a 5% increase to a stat for 5 minutes. Given the nature of the game, the humor I've atleast seen in it (come on, there's an amazon "woman" that sounds like a guy and a quest giver that sounds like a geek, etc.) it would fit in. There's a random chance that the gnome poops rainbow like kittens do, but it's not an every time thing. Heck, it's really rare but it can happen. -------------------- Lyllia the *insert whatever adjectives the game feels like displaying at this time* Magess. |
