Solo vs. group
#68301 - 07/17/08 09:08 AM |
Sorry if there's already a post that asks the question(s), but: 1) Is solo'ing "bad"? 2) Is it better to group and why? I ask because I've not really grouped (had one nice person help me beat the Snow Chief guy because I couldn't beat him the second time I tried) mostly because I don't have faith in myself when it comes to understanding my character (and the game) and I'm still learning to play. I don't want to be a hinderance and be called a "noob" in the group though I am one. I read about mages being good at AOE stuff, but honestly, I found I use a single spell more often than not (fire or ice) though the last couple of areas I've been in are throwing a mix of critters at me that I alternate during a fight, but it's still the same single target spell stuff. Granted, I'm also level 20 and don't yet have access to a ton of cash or spells so I assume it gets a bit more defined later. Anyway, that's about it ![]() Thanks. -------------------- Lyllia the *insert whatever adjectives the game feels like displaying at this time* Magess. |

1 - No, many choose to solo most of the time. 2 - In groups you can kill the mobs faster, thus gaining exp faster. Generally I think most players solo most of their dungeon-crawling, and then group for boss-runs. Depends on how many is on when they're playing. -------------------- May The Rainbows Drop As Cows From The Sky HDoL.eu - Horrific Domain of Legend - A Dungeon Runners Fansite |

it's all preference... I try to group periodically but most times it turns out kinda meh. Especially at lower lvls. I have my main toon who solo'd 100% of the game and hit lvl 100 before some of the dungeons that we have now even exsisted. I have a lvl 19 fire mage I'm using to amuse myself. And like you, even though I know how useful the AoE's can be, I find myself relying on 1 or 2 spells tops:) Although for me it's Shadow lightening and Fire ball. I do keep a couple of AoE's...gaseous Blast and Ring of Fire in my tray for the more dense mobs. The main point is to have fun though:) And you'll always find someone out there that will jump in and give you a hand with the hard fights:) Gary -------------------- Bogey - Studly Barbarian Steele - C - 18 and counting We are all one race.... 1. No. 2. No. Yes. Sometimes. I'm a solo runner. I play video games to get away from people, and ironically I use DR in the same way. I chat with people I've come to recognize and gotten to know a little bit, and enjoy the conversations, but except for one time, I play alone, either dungeons or bosses. It makes the bosses very frustrating at times, but overall, I'm having a lot of fun with solo-running everywhere. And fun is what matters. ![]() Just find your own way of playing, and stick with it. -------------------- Khaz: W4 Laker Girl An earthquake's sound, to a girl's guitar, is just another good vibration. |

If "noobishness" is what's keeping you from grouping, I would say forget that! Just jump right in and talk to your groupmates about how badace your build is. That's what most noobs do. lol The benefit of grouping, especially for boss fights, is that it's easier to fight on a harder difficulty, which gives a higher loot %, and each person in the group also adds to the loot %. So in a full group on insane, you're going to see loads of gold and items, and skills will become much more affordable. |

Quote: First, go me for seeing the quote button ![]() Yeah, skills cost a lot and I'm frugal because I see some of the skills that cost a wicked lot and pout. Atleast I stopped buying equipment like I did the first few levels! Does grouping affect experience gains? Do differnet difficulties affect experience also? Since I'm all kick butt at level 21 now, should I turn up the difficulty on places like Algernon instead of moving on to wherever I am about to start (Widow's something or other I think)? Hmmm...I think I just hijacked my own thread...went from Solo vs. Group to changing difficulties. Quote: Not really but sort of. Grouping does not effect the experience you gain per monster killed, that does not change. But as a group it is much easier to move quickly through the content. Quote: Not really but sort of. Changing the difficulty only affects how much loot (not the quality but the quantity) you get and the how hard the monsters hit/how much health they have. Changing the difficulty makes the gameplay a lot slower but more rewarding in the loot sense. Don't worry too much about gold, after a certain point you'll have more than you will ever need. I think MamaA is kinda on the poor side considering how long she has been 100. She's got about 40 million banked. It's not unusual for toons to get upwards to around 100 million, so don't worry about being poor. -------------------- ------------------------------------------------- MamaAnarchia Level 100 Genius Arch Shadow Wizard Parkaboy Level 100 Athletic Masterful Frozen Summoner CayceP Level 28 Muscular Hardened Fanatical Fighter |

So if a monster gives 5 experience when I kill it myself it will give 5 experience if someone was with me? And If I increase the difficulty, I still get 5 experience, but more gold/equipment? Holy poop! 40 Million and you're 'poor'? I got all excited when I went over 200,000 only to be all sad again when I was close to 100,000 again after training. I think I have like 300,000 now, didn't check before I logged out for the night. I found a way to save money though. People talk about how expensive potions are. When I need more I go to the starting area and kill everything in there and I usually get like 5 or 6 potions in a few minutes. The Boss at the end of that is easier though...if you run to him, all the other bad guys will come too where in the earlier stages they seem to run away if you go to far. Blow up all the monsters and more potions ![]() -------------------- Lyllia the *insert whatever adjectives the game feels like displaying at this time* Magess. |

1. No 2. Sometimes Don't be afraid of being called a noob. Just go into a group and have fun, that is what this is about. Some lifeless people call people noobs all the time so just add them to your ignore list. p.s. When you reach lvl 25, don't forget to group with other people and do the HDoL... that is tons of xp right there |

You obviously have not played the game for very long. Mama_Anarchia is correct. The amount of experience gained per person, per monster does not change no matter the difficulty or group size. One "seems" to level faster on lower settings and in-group because the killing efficiency is greater. I. E. You kill more monsters faster. On the other hand, higher difficulty and/ or grouping do raise the loot percentage from each monster. You can see the percentage when you click on each monster. -------------------- And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming, And the lamplight o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor; And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor Shall be lifted — nevermore! |

I've been just going through dungeons as I clear them. I kill everything in them and move onto the next level of that dungeon. The exception being the little side dungeons in each, I do those when I get to them. I like the Squeakeasy places the best so far, especially when the accountant guy drops the safe code for more loots ![]() Right now I think I'm in the Widower's Nest one level 3. I know I have to go back to one of the other dungeons because I have a paint quest to turn in there so that's more exp because of the cowbell! -------------------- Lyllia the *insert whatever adjectives the game feels like displaying at this time* Magess. |

Up until recently, I rarely grouped, because my puter was so sloooow. I felt guilty that all the monsters were dead b4 I could even gate into the dungeon. My puter is now faster and... Although I love soloing, I have found some folks that i LOVE to group with!!! Advantages are... If you have more people, it seems like you use far fewer potions, and you get far better loot!! We went in with a 5 person party the other night, and i made like 600k in 5 runs. No downside, I really like the opportunity to group up. I am really slow, though, so I have to be careful to get patient people to run with. If I hear even one, " hurry up", I excuse myself, and game alone for awhile. Slower is better!! and Quote: |
