Look at the game you are playing. I think in some ways this game ended up bigger then expected and now more developing is needed. For $5 a month is has a good amount of content and with the income from the box they will hopefully add more for the future. I just think they got caught a little and surprised by the popularity.

LiquidX hit the nail on the head. Retail box isn't an expansion. It's not meant to keep the game fresh and it's not new content. New content comes for free, via Heaves and Chunks and there should be a new one coming soon with things like Posses, Hand Cannons, new Dungeons, etc...

Your real issue isn't the gnome or the retail box. It's "end game", which is a problem in almost any game. Dungeon Runners is designed to be a casual player's game, not something you burn through. Unfortunately, that's not the mindset of many gamers. Many players tend to:

1) Login - Wow! This game is really cool and funny!
2) Level, level and level some more! Ooh! If I don't get to 100 as fast as I can my peen will shrink!!! Man! This game is grindy...
3) Quit playing at 100 - Man! There's nothing to do at 100! This game sucks!

Me? I enjoyed killing things and running through dungeons for 99 levels. The fact that I turned 100 doesn't mean I stopped liking killing things.

You? Here are some ideas:

* Try creating alts with funky builds. It keeps the game fresh for me...

* Check out idearunners.com - there are some good ideas for end-game content. Support them by voting for them or post your own ideas? I've suggested this, this and this, all of which would help with end game ennui.

* Take a break! DR is a great in-between game and time waster! If you played for more than 2 hours in a month, you got your money's worth! Take a month off and wait for the next major chunk. It has a small footprint, so there's no reason to delete it from your system. Just patch up when you're ready to play again:)

When they finally add a new feature (that really doesn't change the game play), you only get it by buying the retail pack?

Yes, that's it. We don't charge for access to Barf-O-Rama, Chill Bill, or PVP. We do charge to hide advertisements, level faster, or have your loot gathered for you and pooped out as gold. Core game play is free, updates to core game play are free.

Ergo, updates to core game play do not require you to buy the box.

I'm terrified to actually say anything as it seems like every member that has complained that they have to purchase the box to get the gnome is getting major-league shouted down. But if I understand this correctly, a paying member (which I'm not but thinking about buying the box) pays $5 a month and the $20 box comes with 6 months of game play (essentially two free months).

So to ask a stupid question, does the paying member have to pay $5 a month AND then $20 for the box or can the 6 months of playtime be applied to their membership? If the latter, then I really do think it makes more sense to simply let the paying members have the bling gnome for free. If the members are smart, they could just go out and buy the box to get it and get a bargain on pricing.

But if they don't, why not simply let them have it for free and pocket the extra $10? You're not going to recruit them with a box because they're already here, eh?

Okay, feel free to flame away now!

If your already a paying member, when you buy the box and apply it to your account, the six free months are applied to your account as well. So you do in fact get two free months.

So, why make paying members go get the box then?

Simple. Because a lot of retailers are squeamish about what they'll carry, because of limited shelf space. And sure, trying to convince a retailer to carry Starcraft 2, WoW, Fallout 3, ect, is like trying to convince a frat boy to have another beer (IE: Really, really easy), this gets harder for games like Dungeon Runners.

Now, the more paying members (As well as newcomers) buy the boxes, the more reinforces to the retailers that there's a demand. The greater the demand, the greater the chance that they will decide they want that money they would otherwise be missing out on, and the more Dungeon Runners gets stocked. The more it gets stocked, the greater chance there is that it'll catch the eye of someone who would have never given it a second look before.

So really, by buying the retail box, it's a win for us, the players (We get the bling gnome, six months for the price of four) and a Win for the Developers (More people = More Revenue to develop new features and content) and thus another win for us (new features! Yay!).

I think I gotcha. I kinda can also see how someone who's played the game for a long time would be reluctant to go to the store to buy the box just to get the bling gnome and yet at the same time have "gnome envy". I mean, who doesn't love that little jingle and dance thing. Makes clicking on items so yesterday!

BTW, from a marketing standpoint, I came to this game after a pcworld article. I had played diablo that I stole from my wife's kid brother to the point of obsession but would NEVER dream of shelling out the money that people do to play other mmorpgs. That kind of exposure really will work a lot better than time on storeshelves in my opinion. To get to the 'tipping point' where the game just suddenly breaks out, the 'cool people' and 'connectors' have to start playing it full time.

Anyway, good discussion.

I am pretty sure its allowed in Nevada as well. Hell for the right price I think you could get them to do the Oompa Loompa song at the same time.

It's actually better to have both. Word of mouth can do wonders for a game (Look at Galactic Civilizations 2), but at the same time, having a dedicated retail presence helps to further bring Dungeon Runners into the gaming populaces attention. This is especially true for the "Casual Gamers", who don't read magazines like PCGamer or PCWorld, as well as the Gift Buying Parents or Spouses who might not know anything other then "it's a computer game".

The more ways you can advertise the product, the better.

What the...?! I mean, you hear about that kind of action in third world countries, but here in an enlightened nation of laws??? OMG. Somethings gotta be done before this degenerates into a full blown Lollipop Guild.
