Watch the Language
#66595 - 07/08/08 08:36 PM |
OK. I don't like to be a killjoy or narc or anything else but this just bugged me. The other night on the PVP server there was some very very rude comments going around. Such suggestions as "with sister" and "with your mother" led to much worse name calling and inappropriate language. Yes they filtered their words but we still know what your saying and if I don't like I can ignore you, But what about my 10 year old son who was playing with his dad that night. Was it really necessary to shout it to the world. How about the /t? Come on my son does not need to be reading that and luckily he was having such a good time with his dad he wasn't payng much attention to your pathetic argument. And I think it's about time we stop referring to our little bling gnome giving everyone sexual favors. Again if you think that's cute whisper it. I enjoy bantering on the world chat and yes sometimes its a lark and a whoot but I think you all went a little far sunday night. And I know that if this bothers me I could go to the DEV's but I really think a good community takes care of each other. So this is just a request from a loyal gamer of DR. Please let's keep the world chat clean. |

I do agree with you that the chat needs to be cleaned up a bit, I would like to see people stop avoiding the chat filter by using a period between letters. Seriously if you have to curse to get your point across you already lost. Its good to see you getting your son into the same game you enjoy but do remember it is rated T for teen. |

Yeah, this is never a black and white issue. As an adult without children, my preferences lean toward less censorship. Now, I have enough imagination to understand how my feelings would probably change if I had a child, and I don't blame parents for doing what a parent naturally does, so I mean no offense... However, I don't feel any obligation to censor myself for the sake of someone else's kids. That's not my responsibility. Of course there are limits, which is why a language filter is in place and there are rules against "inappropriate language," on the other hand, you are supposed to be 18 to create an account on DR, and parents accept responsibilty for the accounts on which they allow their children to play. So it's sort of a tug-o-war that will never end. |

I'm not saying that we need to completely clean up the chat and all dot our I's and cross our t's, or is that cross our eyes and dye your tee's. Hey I take full responsibilty for my son being on the game. At 13 i'm sure he hears alot more than what we are posting at wal-mart or even in school. The question is why? Why post that i'm goig to do your moma or my bling gnome just B you. I mean doesn't that just sound ridiculous and the problem was that it turned into a name calling match on the chat. Anyway I just think we can monitor ourselves and keep it clean. I love to talk smak. My favorite saying in PVP is "Don't run you'll just die tired". I told players that they can't hang and if they had a backbone they wouldn't run. But its all in fun. And when the guys lose so many PVP because someone ran and every other word is *****, I can relate and let them vent. I quess it's more of the content than the actual words that I'm worried about. Kinda like talkin politics or religion, its just going to tick someone off. Again just my 2 cents. |

I agree with Tazjon. When the EU server came up me and my wife went there to enjoy the lower ping but since there's not only PvE but also PvP, we didn't stay long at all. The language were so extremely foul and rude there. From now on, when someone asks me about PvP on a normal server, I always ask them how old they are before recommending them to try it out. I'm surprised the Devs let this go on too. If they sneaked in incognito once and awhile on the PvP-servers, I think they'd be chocked themselves how people abuse the chat-system there. -------------------- May The Rainbows Drop As Cows From The Sky HDoL.eu - Horrific Domain of Legend - A Dungeon Runners Fansite |

Oh, I wasn't accusing you of not taking responsibility. I was just implying that more parents need to get involved in their childrens' online gaming. That would cut down on some of the problem, I think. Most of the untempered beligerence I see in chat is coming from the 'kids,' anyway. It's not hard to pick them out by their spelling deficiency/apathy, their disregard for logic, and their very limited 'bag of tricks': (to paraphrase) "[silence] nub!" "ur so [insert sexual preference]!" etc. LM: actually, I've seen devs on the pvp server when some of the usual yawn-inspiring flame fests were going on. |

Please do not think I was accusing you of not doing a good job as a parent. I am single with no kids and I prefer that the chat be kept clean. I curse plenty at work but if anyone gets offended I go in to censor myself mode, but that does not mean that i want to read it while I play a video game. I was simply pointing out the rating of the game as it pertains to what people can get away with. Momma jokes are so old though that anyone using one should be ignored on the priciple of the thing alone. |

When my 9 year old son plays with me, we group only with each other and I make sure all chat is turned off. He doesn't care about what's going in in chat anyway, he's just excited about killing monsters and picking up every cool looking piece of crappy gray loot he finds! . |
