Mages - worst for soloing bosses?
#61019 - 06/06/08 06:47 PM

I'm pretty new here and I've been trying different class' skills. I kinda like the mage class, but it seems like they're the worst at soloing bosses. Every thread I read about some boss or another, someone seems to mention that mages may have some trouble with it.

One of the things I found attractive about this game was that grouping was supposed to be optional.

Is it true that mages are worse at soloing bosses than the other classes, or have I got it wrong?

Thanks.

Hmm well it's good to know that its possible at least. Also thanks for the reply

Do you know what it is about mages that make the worse though? Is it that their single-target damage is lower and they're better for mobbing?

Exactly John, you hit the nail on the head. Mages tend to exp faster just because of the aoes but when it comes for a boss its a bit harder then the other classes. Know the boss's strengths and weakness as I dont remember all of them but there is a list of them on Townstons. FOr instance Algor the Cold you wouldnt want to be using ice shards or ice bolt as he is immune or very high resistant but I believe he is immune.

Knowing the boss's weakness does make it a bit easier but still harder then the other classes. Even swapping out a piece or 2 of gear to fit the boss makes a difference. Naturally you would want to be in a group for such bosses though as it goes quicker and a better chance for better loot. Also being in a group you probably wont spend as many pots so in essence you making more money.

Just remember to check out LRs site as i dont have the link for it but search for Legendrunner and the link will be there. And knowing is half the battle... oh wait that is a GI Joe line.

The lowly mage can seem a bit week, as the highly mage soon conquers everything without any problems at all. Find out the boss's weaknesses and use apropriate magic to get him down.

We have a simple Boss-guide on HDoL.eu and if you're not satisfied with that, there's also one at TheTownstons.com. Or use both to really complete all info.

I have been summoned? Yes Diannadora can and does whoop Abbeys [censored] all the way to extreme...and LM I only have 6789 life Points so I don't know about 100 X your lvl.

lol, that's crazy low! Gotta get Nica to try out your build, stats and set then. She's still to tired to play a lot so when we do, we usually just run Abby.

Thats interesting I looked into Diannadora's build the only offensive skill you got would be Ice Shards O.o... well I guess Gaseous blast also but I don't know if you can count that....

So why only Ice Shards and why Ret(retribution)? for someone with low HP why run Ret? I don't think you'll be sitting there asking to get it? O.o or do it and its all part of your plan?

It's a Abby-build. Only used against Abby.

Any mage worth a lick can solo abby even up to extreme. Just the higher you go the more pots you use and more time it takes. But to answer your question, yes you use retribution cause you will be hit and having GREAT fire resists with melee reflection is a must for abby. And yes gas blast is another way to inflict dmg to abby. So you mages load up on your fire resists with ice damage gear and abby will be killed. However fighters are still the best for abby, hands down.

I am not so sure about fighters being best for Abby, as an ice mage who re-speced to go high-END and lots of melee reflect (as retribution doesn't give the full effect when used with BSOL), I generally just run Abby on Formidable and Extreme now.

Yes, I use a few health pots as he hits for for 2-12k often, but why not take advantage of those hits against him with between 200-300% melee reflect (before the retribution buff) depending on how I am geared.

I don't bother with any Fire Resist buffs (have 806 FR from gear) as he normally drops during or right after the 1st firestorm on Formidable and 2nd firestorm on Extreme. I have solo'd him on Insane, although the extra loot is hardly worth the time, but wanted to see if I could even do it.

Certainly Abby is just one boss, and I will agree that in general fighters probably do have a easier time with bosses. Abby is just one, that when well geared with ice damage and fire resist, mages can also take him down really quick.

In the beginning, Abby was a pain in the rear for me, but as your gear gets better, he gets easier.

well.. mages have to pay for the fact that they can aoe and level faster than any other class somehow. and its not like you can't respec to fighter or get a party and finish offa boss for the quest if thats what your concerned about.

But yea, mages single target dmg isn't soo hot and their tankage isn't either ( for the most part) But their AoE absoutly rapes all. soo it works out well.

If you know what type the boss is, fire, shadow, ice , poison. The mage shouldn't have a problem, providing they have the right offensive and buff skills.

Example: Poison Boss - Use Offensive Fire Skills and Poison Resistance.

Also, armour could help with this, im a Pyro Mage, so i use armour which increases my fire damage. You can also use the armour you have to increase your resistance for certain things aswell. Which is the same with all classes.
