quite borring ... quite expensive ...
#60387 - 06/04/08 07:08 AM

Dungenrunners seems to me very comparable to another older game from a well known studio. Thats my opinion, but i do not claim to know if this was intended or not.

I have played the thing now for a while and have to say that the mobs could vary a bit more in quantity and type, its quite easy to know if gonna die or not if attack from there or there.

There is also no item-loss if u die in PVE and i miss some kind of hardcore-mode/ladder where u realy could lose a fully equiped character that u have worked for weeks or months on, sometimes it gets borring cause u know nothing can happen to u.

Pricing, if i would play DR as a member for 12 months i would pay almost 60€ ... thats quite expensive even for a full game, if i would play more than one year it get hideously expensive.

I know DR got no initial costs and monthly membership-fee is just the half from ordanary mmorpg's but DR got just instanced enviroment at all, its just a morpg, that means nc-soft havent the similar costs of maintainig servers for the game like they got for Lineage2, not even the half.

So what are the causes DR costs so much, and will there be an option for longterm-players to buy a lifetime-membership to reduce the overall costs for beeing a member, simply beeing able to use the full gamecontent?

DR has some similarities to other games because 1) There is no originality left in the world. Everyone borrows from others. 2) DR is a "tongue in cheek" game that actually sets out to "spoof" other games. This is part of the game's charm.

The mob variants and tile sets do not have as great a spectrum as other games, but DR is a relatively new game. More content is being added all the time. DR has patches far more often than other MMOs that have been around longer.

I would surmise the no item loss is a part of the casual game play experience DR offers. This also sets it apart from other games. Anyone, serious gamer or not, can log into DR and play for ten minutes to hours on end and have fun.

As for your last complaints, I just do not understand. The cost of the game is too high for you; despite that, you admit it costs half as much as other games? Odd. At any rate, DR's budget is not directly attached to NCSoft. The developers bring us a very enjoyable game for next to nothing. Furthermore, players can fully enjoy the game without ever spending a cent.

I was hoping someone would post something like what I was thinking in a more coherent manner than how it was going through my mind.

Well said.

I have nothing against the similarities, indeed i like the current ones, it was just a note that noone come around, as usual, and say "hey, our nice game is not comparable in any way" ...

Many Patches, thats nice to hear

To do a full run in classic d2 hardcore hell it takes far less than 10minutes: teleport -> seek boss/activate switches to let him span -> slaught it -> grab item -> next game, fastplaced and dangerous at once, i just say i miss that in DR (extra hc-server?)

I dont say its to much for a full featured MASSIVE-Multiplayer-Online-Rollplay-Game (MMORPG), u know hundreds of players fighting the enviromont or/and each other in a non-instanced world, would dr this, it would be quite cheap.

For a game thats instanced, the costs to maintain the world(s) r quite lower and the current pricing does not respect that _enough_ in my view, simply to much for that what u get here, that was my statement.

60 bucks a year i wouldnt call next to nothing, or u mean i get the full gamecontent for nothing, well thats not true: "Membership requied" on items that r in general uber to those u can get for free.
So i assumed, playing the game not beeing a member is quite good to find out if the game fits your likes but its way off of beeing able to fully enjoy the whole game.

Thx for reading, i dont need any furter conversation, about im right or wrong, its just my opinion.

The only real question i asked is still left: will there be a payment-method that better suits to longterm-players (more than one year membership) in the near future?

Well, this is my opinion: $60 a year/ $5 a month is cheaper than any other online RPG game, not to mention there are no (required) initial software/expansion purchases.

Making a statement like "the costs to maintain the world(s) r quite lower and the current pricing does not respect that _enough_ in my view" is meaningless unless you actually know what the costs are, not to mention things like salary for the people who work on the game, and whatever other expenses there might be.

Actually, full game content is available free (with the exception of the upcoming Bling Gnome). All gear has a percentage chance to be nonmember, and although members get benefits over nonmembers (as they should), there is no game content that is off-limits to nonmembers.

You are free to your opinion, but when your opinion includes false assertions, you can expect corrections.

To answer you question, I don't believe any such payment method is being considered (although it has been suggested before), but I could be wrong.

Hmmmm...To me the "Similiar" game did not have the greatest variance in MOB graphics besides different colors.

The Charm in this game is in the Tongue in Cheek dialogue, that alone sets it apart from the "Similiar" game and makes it heads and shoulders above the current crop of games.

I suppose if one is playing a group of mmorps and are paying for them, I would myself find it expensive and time consuming.

Personally, the game's conveniences to me outweigh its drawbacks, at least for my playstyle. I like to group sometimes but I can't STAND the process of trying to put a group together. DR brilliantly allows you to either - start fighting in a dungeon and open your group and watch people drop in, OR, join open group, you're in, boom. You could argue that the game lacks depth but honestly for me that's also a plus - I like to be able to either play for a half hour or hours on end, get into the action and get out when I gotta go. Try doing that during a WoW raid or 5-man and listen to the grumbling, lol..

For a game like this, it's worth the $5 a month for the extras.

WoW = 19.99 base game + 29.99 BC + (15*12) = 229.98 US for 1 year

CoH/V = 29.99 dual box set + (15*12) = 209.99 US for 1 year

RuneScape = 5*12 = 60 US

I would do Guild Wars but I forget the cost on how many expasions... roughly 29.99*5?

At the price of $5.00 a month US and no box cost it is cheap. That is 1/3 the price of the standard MMO today and it rivals quite a few of the ones I have played lately for fun factor.

Edit: Bogey I believe Guildwars is 4 total boxes you would need to buy for the full set. Factions, Prophecies, Nightfall and Eye of the North. Though they are now available as sets, I think you can get any two boxed together in the stores. GW worked out to a pretty good value even if you paid $40 per box as each came out.

While it may not have the depth of some it is quite a bit faster and more fun than a few full priced MMOs. IMO it is well worth 5 bucks a month. I know I will be buying the box when it does come out.
