The Size of the PTS Client
#58237 - 05/14/08 12:14 AM |
Currently, it seems to me that the PTS is as big as the main game is. I was wondering if there is any way to shrink it or anything like that... probably a stupid question, since if it could be done it will be already. But the size of the PTS is the main deterrent for me to try it out (since I have a mediocre, unstable connection speed and an over-cluttered hard drive), and I'm sure it is also what's stopping a lot of other people trying it out. |

The Test client would have to be as large as the regular game ... since you are basically installing a completely different version. Once you have it installed once then it will update through the Launcher program. Its really only the first install thats a problem for some. -------------------- JoeB - Level 100 - Back to a Fighter where he belongs SirOldBottom - Level 49 - Ice Mage Mearlin - Level 29 - Mage Dungeon Runners Map Build 0.110 |

Why not combine the two...next patch of Dungeon Runners have it copy its files into a separate directory and from then on install the PTS as part of its own patching or installation process. Then have the Executables automatically do this...would give many people a reason to goto PTS since it is already on their machine and they don't need to download or install anything else. |

Problem I would see is the different versions of the files ... can see this being a mess to set up. Both having the same name but different sizes and content depending on version. -------------------- JoeB - Level 100 - Back to a Fighter where he belongs SirOldBottom - Level 49 - Ice Mage Mearlin - Level 29 - Mage Dungeon Runners Map Build 0.110 |

Quote: Not at all... I have both versions and I have the PTS on a different directory on a different partition... works flawlessly from the NClauncher.. I would imagine this would probably work just as well from a removable disk..... |

And I have both installed on the same partition. No issues whatsoever. -------------------- Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. - Arthur C. Clarke |

Same - both in my D:\Games directory. I love that both combined take barely 1GB, whereas I just deleted 6.75GB of friggin' LotR... |

I understand you have it in different directories ... but you also download and installed separately. I guess the laucher could duplicate all folders you have into a new directory and then update the ones that it needs to with the new version. Not sure of the logistics of that though. -------------------- JoeB - Level 100 - Back to a Fighter where he belongs SirOldBottom - Level 49 - Ice Mage Mearlin - Level 29 - Mage Dungeon Runners Map Build 0.110 |

Perhaps I should make myself clearer? My main issue with the Client is its size. My download speed is slow and my internet link unstable. |

No way to make it smaller, as it has to be a complete playable "copy" of the main game with the new code integrated for testing.... Now, if there was an option to make a donation of a few $$$ to cover the cost of making and shipping, and you can get the latest PTS on a CD or DVD, would that work for ya Necro? -------------------- "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn" - Cthulhu fhtagn: 47°9′S, 126°43′W Cthulhu's Character Stats |
