Top 10 F2P Games at TTH
#57713 - 05/08/08 03:01 PM

Translation: The Top 10 Free-to-play games at Ten Ton Hammer.

http://tentonhammer.com/node/32476

Some of you guys may have read this already. If you did, you probably noticed that we're not listed.

Yeah...I was kinda bummed too. But I hope we will be! So I contacted Ralsu, the one person who compiles this weekly list, and he said he just hasn't had a chance to play Dungeon Runners yet. (Or Exteel, for that matter.)

So keep your eyes open. Maybe soon

Remove all the Closed Beta's and let the Live games be on the list! I mean, why list a game wich people can't play? That's just silly.

Yeah, I saw this linked in the Mythos forum on mmorpg.com As far as I'm concerned, it's a pretty misleading list of games. It's very subjective and doesn't appear to offer any comparisons between the games a la "balanced scoredcard". When I read it for Week 1, I had the definite impression that he hadn't even played some of the games. Here's a quote (Warrior Epic Quote, Week 1) that gives me that impression:

Quote:

Ralsu's take: This game makes the list for what look to be solid graphics and a dedication to releasing a good product in addition to a unique system that uses a small download to make the game "portable."

If he actually played it, they're either solid or they aren't...

Other questionable quotes:

Quote:

Ralsu's take: Another Diablo clone, this one seems to have gotten a solid translation. Combat can be a little repetitive but intense. I need more play time before I say more about it.

If you need more playtime to discuss it, then how could it be rated #2?

Quote:

Ralsu's take: This is perhaps the quirkiest title on the list. I haven't spent a ton of time with it, but I like the quick fun of solving a few puzzles but feeling a sense of continuity. There is no other MMOG like Puzzle Pirates.

Once again, if you haven't spent much time with it, how can you rate it in the 10 ten f2p games?

Quote:

Ralsu's take: The steampunk feel to this game fits, and this vehicles and characters look very cool. I expect it to have fun PvP. I'm still waiting to see what the translation is like.

He 'expects' and is 'waiting to see'?

The fact that it includes closed beta games and foreign games that may not have been translated/released for a North America audience is a problem, too. Maybe "10 games worth looking at if they ever go live in our demographic market" would be a good title.

Mythos being #1 is kind of funny:

1) It's still in closed beta
2) The devs have just announced a total redesign (again) that nobody has actually tested
3) The last major update had major issues...

Don't get me wrong, I think Mythos has tons of potential and will be DR's main competition in it's genre for 2008, but it's too early to tell. It's all hype at this point and things change pretty dramatically in it from build-to-build.

As far as that goes, many of those titles are probably solid titles. I personally think, however, that he's way off the mark with Pirates of the Caribbean online. It has way to many niggling things (no installation options - it installs where it wants to only and the fact that a free player has to login and wait in queue just to be able to download a patch - it should patch first, login and play second) to be a serious contender.

Well, he does encourage folks to post their own top 10 lists on their forums, if anyone is interested

But I wouldn't post something like this, since it appears to be *slightly* biased:

1) Dungeon Runners
2) Dungeon Runners
3) Dungeon Runners
4) Dungeon Runners
5) Dungeon Runners
6) Dungeon Runners
7) Dungeon Runners
8) Dungeon Runners
9) Dungeon Runners
10) Dungeon Runners

Oh, just a tad.

I totally missed they put Pirates of the Caribbean Online in that list. I never thought I'd se that in ANY list. I beta-tested that game from the launch and participated in all stress-tests and everything and it were pure pain. I didn't like the game one bit. I played it 'cause I took on the job, and that were that.

But as I said earlier, I think a Top 10 list should only include Live games, and also translated games. Or else it's just a "I think my future Top 10 could be" would be a better topic.

Re: Pirates - I agree heavily - the beta was so bad I thought it was really alpha and I don't have that much patience. I uninstalled after less than a day of play.

Sounds like the list is NOT TTH's Top 10, but just that particular guy's favorites (so far). You would certainly think that someone at TTH would have clued the guy in that DR and TTH had a relationship and he should at least check it out before the "list" was published.

And when half of the 10 ARE closed betas, they really aren't free to play or everyone - are they?
