New Gym Freak change....
#56584 - 04/30/08 10:46 PM

I read some of the new changes that were coming with this next "heave" and I came across a change to Gym Freak:-10% to ranged attack speed.....What is up with that? If rangers can't use Gym Freak, where do you expect us to get health from? In my opinion, worst change ever.

My only question is: was "gym freak" ever intended as being used by a ranger - since it's a fighter passive? Isn't that why there's "average BMI" for the more lithe and flexible/agile ranger? Seems that a "gym freak" would generally be a buff, veiny, pumped up physically imposing figure, compared to a person of "average build" that's more spry and flexible that wouldn't be in close combat by design (i.e. a ranger vs a fighter).

I'm just not sure what you mean by what you're going to use to get health now... Put more points in END? Use more H pots? Strafe/kite more so you don't take as much dmg as you're "supposed to" from a more physically damaging fighter? The mage and ranger passives for magic dmg and ranged speed both reduce melee damage and/or speed...because it makes sense, no?

I'm honestly not flaming you, I'm just curious as to why you really think that a fighter buff being changed somehow directly impairs your efficiency as a ranger, or if it's even supposed to by design. I think its been "tweaked" a bit in order to make rangers be a bit more like, well, rangers.

I'm more of a PvP kind of guy myself, and I'm sure many people will agree with me, that having and using the "gym freak" passive, makes it easier on rangers to not be forced to use endurance bows, which in turn has a slower att rating. Also, who says you have to stick with just your class specific skills? I'd bet my bottom dollar almost everyone out there uses a spell not "intended" for that class. Also, I'm not sure if this is true or not, but alot of the armor that gives you +end has more speed decrease (-3% move speed etc.) than other armor with different stats. So in having the "gym freak" passive, rangers are not forced to use slower shooting guns with more end, or wearing armor with more end, in turn reducing their movement speed.

Some rangers prefer to be able to stand toe-to-toe with a fighter, and not be forced to kite the whole game while being chased by a fighter.

A lot of rangers use gym freak (including me). I think the big difference is in pvp. We need all the end we can get, and if we put too much in end, we get no atk rtg (not enough against fighters)

in response to ranger: Right. Rangers' mvm speed isn't enough that we can kite and do enough effective dmg.

Seems to me like this will throw pvp off-balance considering pretty much all pvp rangers use gym freak.

Very much so, that is as must have, along with acid to take a considerable "chunk" out of fighter armor for a time. Maybe they're adding the -att speed in future thinking of 1h ranged weapons, but I see no reason to add it on to "gym freak"

I think the dev's host an annual party, in which they hang a dartboard upon the wall, with 3 pictures on it, one of each class....this time the dart landed on the rangers.

Ahh, now I see your particular concern. I can see how that might be a concern with pvp and admittedly, I don't pvp. I also use GF on my ranger and I saw the change, but I just figured Ill have to "roll with the punches" so to speak, but Aerator is built as slow-shooting/high poison dmg output ranger with good def and good end/hp, so its not as much of a problem for me.

I wasnt saying that we shouldn't cross-train skill so to speak, thats a great part of the game of course. I guess I just think the devs are trying to "somewhat" polarize things a bit and have ppl have to change their playstyle a little bit on purpose. But that's just imo of course.

Having the classless system is awesome, but it sometimes seems that everyone is just churning out the same TYPE of "classless" ranger/fighter/mage if you get what Im saying, and I think they're slowly trying to make things less cookie-cutter (which is funny actually since we DO have a classless system....) - ironic eh? lol...

Carry on...

I'm going to chime in too, as this has made playing my PvE hybrid ranger a lot more difficult. I'm already splitting my attributes to have enough mana to cast both Bill and Bait. This was the way I could get a few extra hit points to balance out the mob difficulty changes starting from Chunk #2.

While GF still gives benefit of health, the -10% speed eats up more than the +5 points in agil that the skill provides. DOT is affected significantly.

It seems to me that each class has a passive skill that gives a big boost to its intended class but nerfs the other two classes fairly badly.

So the Ranger skill "Trigger Happy" reduces the melee attack speed and magic damage. Nerfing both fighters and mages.

And the Mage skill "Bookworm" reduces strength and agility so nerfing fighters and rangers.

But the Fighter skill "Gym Freak" actually boosted a ranger cause it boosted agility.

So by adding the ranged speed nerf the devs are bringing this skill into line with the other classes passive skills.

Personal point of view:

The fact that almost every experienced ranger uses Gym Freak either in lieu of, or in conjunction with Average BMI clearly indicates that the skill was being widely used in a manner other than it was intended. Rangers get a huge boost from using GF as it currently exists today, whereas Fighters who add Average BMI to their skills don't. They get a much, much smaller boost. Why should rangers get such a huge boost from using another class' passive skills when the other classes don't get the same boost from using alternate passive class skills?

In general, of all the skills available to all players, the starting passives for the three base classes should be able to be used with each other, but they should also have penalties that balance the benefits. In this case, almost every experience Ranger users Gym Freak for the huge END boost and take almost no penalties. If a ranger wants that huge END boost, then it needs to be offset in some manner. That's what this change does.

Rangers can be the most effective pvp classes other than god mode mages. The Little bit of def rating we get isn't much more than mages which cripples us against fighters. And we need alot of health to fight mages anyway. Its a sad day for rangers with the 10% decrease. I could deal with 5%, but more than that is crippling. I'd rather not be forced to constantly use more end gear just so i can have enough health to take a punch, rangers aren't fast enough to kite effectively. IF this stays the way it is, average bmi should get a bit of a boost to health to make up for it some.

*sighs* I am not for this change at all... It is a major hit on ranger hp, and I believe it is signifigantly misbalanced... You don't see average BMI with -% melee attack speed! (don't do that please...) This ruins my crit ranger build, instead of having 54k hp, a managable amount, I have 42k hp or so, so if I get knocked back or feared or what not, I am toast. If I load it in I have .47 attack speed instead of .40 speed.

This is downright terrible! The nerf is WAY too much, and not necissary... I know I am not the only one here upset too...

This change was made to give a tradeoff to rangers that use this skill. This skill gives you +50% to health per point of endurance with literally no tradeoff for non-mana using rangers. +50% to health for a -10% in attack speed seems to be quite livable. We're open to other changes, of course.

The problems for rangers in PvP stem from other deeper problems than this simple change. I believe mage vs. ranger is fairly well balanced. I believe mage vs. fighter is fairly well balanced.

It's rangers vs. fighter that are truly suffering with this latest build.

We've been working on some adjustments based on this feedback:

1. The amount of damage that is generated by Dark Conniption when it procs has been reduced.

2. Acidic Blight is now an instant cast spell.

3. Fear of Gosh can now be interrupted when taking damage. This uncontrollable running when getting nuked by a fighter in PvP is a big part of the balance problems with Dark Conniption.

4. The strength of the knockdown effect for Putrid Penetration has been significantly increased. This will make it a more useful kiting / escape skill for rangers.

5. The duration of stun immunity in PvP has been reduced a bit.

We're testing these changes now and will make further adjustments based on the results if necessary.

Thanks for all the feedback!

-10% Attack speed is a huge blow though, even with +%attack speed. It's just not balanced, there is hardly a pro in using gym for ranger anymore... just too much of a nerf. This is not a "fair" trade off. Here I am with + a fair amount of attack speed (enough to have .40 in last patch) and I have .07 more speed then before... I haven't even checked without +attack speed. Just does not make sense.

While I will certainly try to make the best of it, the ranger class in PVP is pretty gimped against the fighter with this change. Rangers don't have the speed to keep distance from fighters, and when fighters use Shout with Roller, it's unlikely a ranger can go that far before dying. The choice previously was stay and fight, thus using this passive as the ranger class doesn't have enough HP to manage the incredible damage the fighter class (and INT mage) can do. I played on the PTS against a fighter that I normally have a good chance to tie or beat, and was completely owned. Frankly, there has to be a better way.

OK, I can accept that Gym Freak needs to be balanced, but if this is kept as it is, I think something else needs to be done to offset the difference (maybe some extra ranged bonus for average BMI).

And outside of pvp, I'll now have to add more pts to end (and therefore do less samage) in order to, for example, not be continually one-hit by insane abby in lvl 100 groups.

We've been testing the latest changes for Ranger skills. I feel that you'll get a lot of use out of the improved Putrid Penetration. It knocks back like Shadow Word: Smackdown and has a long range. It's now an EXCELLENT kiting tool vs. fighters. With the improved knockback strength, this skill now hits enemies twice in many cases. This has the happy side effect of increasing your chances to get a Barf-o-Rama to hit. All-in-all this should more than make up for the 10% attack speed reduction if used properly.

Also, the addition of a 5% chance to break Fear of Gosh and Unnerving Shout when taking damage helps you to get out of the way of fighters in PvP a bit easier. It feels much better.

Thanks for all the feedback. We should have this new build on PTS shortly.

True. Putrid isn't available until lev 25 and Smackdown is lev 19. Mana considerations are another concern. I have to economize my mana as it is. All the new skills are lev 16 or greater (Barf-o-rama is lev 37), so there is no hoopla there.

It's hard enough to go against a well prepared high level opponent. Granted, this change affects all levels, but if the idea is to nerf the low lev player (again), this is a fine way of doing it without 'doing it'.

I learned shortly after I joined that this game is always in a state of "flux" as Da Big Bossman Stephen and company regularly and consistently tweak the game in ways to make the game better for the widest group of people possible.

Sure you cant please everyone all the time with each heave and chunk that are spewed in our faces but why not before bashing something you may not have even tried, go to the PTS and try some PvP after the tweaks that Stephen mentioned a few posts up are implemented on the PTS....

What group of people said that gym freak needs to be a non-ranger skill? I do not think there were huge campaigns regarding this matter, and this just mostly will make people MAD, therefore not benifiting the masses. There should be something other than gym freak messed up, gym freak is the only decent way to boost a ranger's hp with a passive skill in this game. Average BMI is not very signifigant. PLUS why would they add other benifits to ranger to "balance out" the nerf? doesn't that defeat the purpose of nerfing rangers? Was it required that we can't use gym freak specificly?

I KNOW! Here, we'll take away hp so now all they can do is kite! Now rangers are limited to one style of combat! Yay!

or, there was the old way where you could have a nice steady build with decent hp and still have a fighting chance. Now I can attack .07 slower than before with the same build... No, that's not signifigant at ALL. sure, the knockback is twice as hard as last time, but what if you miss? What if that opponent just happens to resist the knockback?? Boom you're dead!
Making fear have 5% break chance and same with shout is not just a benifit for ranger, but for all classes... So rangers only have a harder knockback... at the loss of gym freak... woot...

(not trying to be disrespectful, just trying to get people to see how much some hate this new "edit", and just how much sense it makes)

Please feel free to keep using Gym Freak. The 50% increase to health will still be really handy. Indeed, a 10% reduction in ranged attack speed will not take a huge chunk out of the gain that you get from increased health.

This change decreases your DPS by 10% if all you do is normal ranged attacks. That is a pretty small change... mostly unnoticed in many cases. If you use skills to compensate then you'll barely notice it at all.

The reasoning behind these changes is to slightly discourage use of Gym Freak by Rangers... and to slightly encourage the use of more skills for Rangers. Mages have a big tradeoff for using Gym Freak... now Rangers have a small tradeoff. You can still use it, but you'll pay a 10% damage penalty for it (unless you rely on other skills to augment base damage).

Still, we see the upset this is causing some folks. We're giving some consideration to boosting Trigger Finger Frenzy's base attack speed increase by 5% to help compensate.

Rangers used ranged weapons, therefore kiting is one of their best offensive tactics. Rangers can't compete with fighters for tanking. You can play your character how you want, but you can't expect the devs to accommodate your unorthodox tactics.

Ummmm, rangers can't kite to save their lives against any decent fighter above level 20, holy roller. Rangers aren't very fast so kiting isn't a very good option.

The biggest reason i don't like the nef, is because of Mages, imho, its hardest for rangers to fight good mages, rather than good fighters. Since a rangers little bit of defence accounts for nothing against a mage, they have to rely on health and atk speed. Cause its suicidal to try to kite a mage as a ranger.

I'm not saying the nerf is entirely bad, but I just think that the atk speed hit should only be 5%. We are using an extra skill slot to put it.

And gym freak was the only good way for a ranger to get a decent amount of health without killing damage potential, for pve or pvp.

Low level players are really screwed with the gym freak nerf. No stunning skills other than fear(shot and of gosh) and butcher for fighters. The only way for them to counter that is with high health and atk speed. Maybe some of the new changes will help balance these things out a bit, i'll get on the pts now(is build 119 up now?) and check it out.

Agreed. At the start of a match, I might be able to get a hit or two off on a fighter by hitting and running, but holy roller soon covers the distance. Rangers would basically need the mvmt speed of a mage to kite consistently.

I logged onto the PTS, but no one was pvping at the time so I didn't have a chance to play any matches.

I can't really comment on this update since I don't play as a Ranger, and I haven't experienced the new changes. However, in current PvP, I find that Rangers aren't as dangerous as Fighters, at least from the viewpoint of a Mage. I would say that the change wasn't awfully necessary, but that's my two cents.

Its always the same. We should not forget how hard it is for the devs to make this right. It is supposed to be that rangers and mages kill from a distance, thats just normal. A fighter is a tank. So kiting actually isnt a too bad tactic. Now.. I'll take my own advice for myself too, as I just realise I tank too much with my ranger. I kind of take back my first comment I made about this matter, as I now see how hard it is to keep the players happy but nerf the things like a ranger with too much health, which these days results in a ranger tank.

When did this game start getting balanced around pvp?

The day PVP was added. There have been countless changes to the game to "balance" PVP that have also affected game play in PVE. Was one of my first complaints about PVP ...

Seems like only yesterday they were polling us to see if we wanted pvp implemented.

Well, the thing is, PvP is the easiest way to see if the three archtypes are balanced: by pitting them against each other. In a way, the updates aren't "centered" around PvP: rather, PvP is used as a tool to determine what kind of balancing is required.

If they're going to add the - ranged attacked speed to gym freak, then why not make another ranger passive skill? Let's look at it: Mages have bookwork and couch potato, fighters have mad melee mastery and way of the roo, and rangers have trigger finger frenzy. 2:2:1. How about evening that out seeing as you've made gym freak anti-ranger.

Very true, but comparatively it's pretty weak.
