Pyromage
#53450 - 04/06/08 02:37 PM

Here's my noob Pyromage. I just want to see what people think of him so far. I'm really going to be a mix of shadow and fire.

http://demosthenez.100webspace.net/displaychar2.php?charname=Walkon

I know he's a low lvl and stuff I just want to see what people think of him so far.

Actually, I would say you have a lot of work to do getting gear closer to your level. Most of your stuff is horribly down-level and needs to be upgraded. Try running a few dungeons on insane and you should get enough drops to improve things.
You also need a faster spell (shadow lightning comes to mind) on your right hand.

Well, since he said: "I just want to see what people think of him so far. I'm really going to be a mix of shadow and fire."

I did exactly that. I am giving constructive advice, which he needs, since he specifically mentioned shadow and he has none enabled. Shadow lightning is the main shadow skill so it stands to reason it should be mentioned.

A level 13 with gear from levels 2,3 and 4 can be improved easily. The thing is most new players are so caught up in the fun of killing monsters and collecting loot that they forget about watching for the gear that would help them. I know I did when I first started.

He's definitely on the right track, just needs a little nudge in the right direction.

Some of his gear could still be lvl'd up, but remember: the gear in Demos' viewer is still offset by 5 lvls.

Just a quick note, his gear is actually 7, 8, and 9, with a few 11s/12s. Demos' viewer still deals with version 1.0 XML (when gear was reported 5 levels too high). So its not as bad as all that!

I am going with shadow but until I get my shadow lighting to atleast lvl 3, i'll stick with ring of fire for my right click.

Ring of Fire causes burn now. It's useful for PvP.

Ring of Fire ALWAYS causes "burn". It's useful for chasing/shaking a chase and blasting away an opponent running around in circles. However, its damage is quite low if you're not donning fire gear, but fire bolt is not that great; so...

Ring of Fire is one of the best spells for a mage, especially when fighting monsters. Its damage is encredibly high even without the proper gear when properly used. It's the same with Gaseous blast. Every mage who was leveling in the Crypts can admit it. Shadow is at my mind only useful for Shadow Lightning or as a boss killer, but it's definitely the best way for a mage.

Just search at youtube, there are numerous videos which can prove this easily. Especially this recently added video shows this.

Ring of Fire's damage is actually quite low. While it is true it has a good maximum damage, its minimum damage is low low low, and thus on average it isn't all that great compared to what Gaseous Blast can do, even if you don Fire Gear and no Poison Gear. Gaseous Blast is not blocked by monsters in the way of the attack (it doesn't radiate from you according to LOS), is waaay cheaper in terms of mana, and as said, does more damage. It also has a longer duration, which is not good for PvE but very useful for PvP. On the other hand, Ring of Fire's range is much greater, and it can do a bit of immediate damage on impact. It also has a slightly quicker cooldown, but not much...

In general, Gaseous Blast is more powerful than Ring of Fire, but Ring of Fire is easier to use.

After doing some runs through SC and Sissi. I've noticed that Shadow Lightning's Cooldown isn't bad at all, but Ring of Fire's cooldown sort of annoys me. I also really like ring of fire because of the burn damage it does. I guess I'll switch according to dungeon... Shadow lightniing isn't affective as Rong of Fire in Rotgut.

Sorry for any misspellings.

Instead of choosing between the three AOE spells, here's a better idea: use all three at once.

Hate to say I told you so but ...

Ah, who am I kidding? I love to say I told you so!

Anyway, yeah. Firebolt on LM, Shadow Lightning on RM and Ring of Fire (soon to be Crispy Critters too!) on whatever slot is handy. Works quite well, thank you.

Methinks that crispy critters will replace firebolt on LM with shad lighting still on RM for most "mob mages". I'm glad to see a "Burning Hands" type spell come to the game - at least the new skills make up for NOT getting an ice AoE. I'll stick with my belief that it just hasn't been made yet because they're perfecting it.

Shadow Lightning + Improved Shadow Lightning PWNs everything that doesn't have lots of Shadow Resistance.

True, Gaseous Blast has a much higher overall damage. But this was not my point. Ring of Fire has an incredible high initial damage and that's his biggest advantage. Soften'em up wit RoF first and if they survive, which is very likeley for harder mobs or when you play on insane, then you can or should also use Gaseous Blast.

All 3 AoE spells are able to deal a devastating amount of damage but many people just don't try to improve the way how tu use them.

It is unlikely you will kill most non-fodder monsters in the vicinity by the initial damage of Ring of Fire alone. In that case, I think it is better to use Gaseous Blast first and then Ring of Fire.

Why? Because Gaseous Blast has a longer duration, so using it before Ring of Fire can maximise its potential and kill monsters faster: if you use it after Ring of Fire, then a lot of the potential of the spell might be wasted if say, the monster dies within three seconds when your Gaseous Blast can cover six seconds. Using it before Ring of Fire, and you can get more damage out of Gaseous Blast, and thus kill monsters quicker (Ring of Fire's Damage over Time effect is very short, so usually if monsters don't die in the initial blast, they will suffer the full duration).

The second reason is because Gaseous Blast has a significantly shorter range, so if you cast it after, you might not get the ranged mobs which tends to run away if you get too near; whereas Ring of Fire's range can cover the range of most ranged mobs. On the other hand, if there are melee mobs about chances are that Ring of Fire won't reach the ranged mobs either because the melee mobs will be blocking your attacks, which makes the point moot; but Gaseous Blast does more damage, so it's still better to inflict it on the ranged mobs first so they will be nicely damaged by the time you've finished the melee mobs.

Right now I'm useing RoF and Lightning and fre bolt and ice shards. I know I'm supposed to be a pyromancer, but Rotgut is easier for me to run when I use ice.

Either use Fire Bolt or use Ice Shards. Don't use both. The two spells serve the same purpose and they don't cumulate with each other (since both are spammable), so just choose one.

I recommend using Gaseous Blast along with RoF and Shadow Lightning. Unless you have a very good reason not to, use all three AoEs.

I would swap Average BMI for Gym Freak (your HP seems a bit low) and dump Coach Potato (personally, it is unnecessary); using Gaseous Blast instead. I would also dump Summon Snowman and replace it with Snow Globe: assuming you could keep Bill alive with just Snow Globe (Snow Globe is also a healing spell for Bill, not just a buff). If not, then keep Summon Snowman.

That's only the case when you have BSoL at an acceptable level. In case you haven't noticed, he doesn't have BSoL, and even if he did it won't be effective. At lower levels, Mages do need a serving of HP to stay alive. I can guarantee you that a Mage with 1000 HP and 50000 Mana without BSoL isn't going to do well. I doubt you will need a terribly high amount of mana at that level without BSoL, so investing in HP to stop you from chugging pots like crazy is a good idea IMO.
