Will PvP ever *really* be fair?
#51253 - 03/15/08 10:35 PM

Grrrrr....

Seems like the "twinks" and unequal match ups are happening more and more frequently lately and it's really a shame because I have tried to be fair/objective/non-judgmental about PvP but now after this I am pretty certain that I will never play PvP again....period.

Why?

Well the very last time I tried to play, as soon as I entered the Q, I was immediately put up against 2 level 100 opponents who of course immediately slaughtered me in full Cinder Armor for the fighter and a skittled Mage. I never had a glimmer of a chance and figured that out when the fighter KO'd me with only 3 or 4 hits, each time showing off by changing weapons... Then the mage the next time would cycle through the 4 main mage attacks (Fire, Ice, Poison, Shadow) just to show off. They each took turns until the match was over and while they didn't outright make fun of me, you could tell they were bored and playing around which to me is BS....

This is wrong for SO MANY reasons ranging from their damage is still 2x to 3x (or more) then I can ever hope to do even with the "Re-balancing" to lvl 101 for all. Which as we know it is easier for a Level 100 character to re-balance +/- one level then a level 58 character to try to go up 43 levels.

Before you say "sore loser" consider this:

Another concern is the "Twink" which has been well documented in other threads. While having a fair amount of "Excessiveness" taken away from them over the last couple of builds/heaves, they are still IMHO an unbalanced problem, at least as bad as the unequal level match ups..

I would like to see an option appear for the person with the lowest level (at least 30 level difference lower) to be able to leave the session without the current 5 minute "Cowards Sickness" and their opponent getting a cheap and free win when they did nothing. Make it an option to click on or a button to click or a skill to add or something, but Currently there are still serious balance issues with PvP that will hopefully be/are being addressed.

Overall this is an AWESOME game, and if you look at my Reg Date, you will see I have been here for almost a year and while I lurk daily I usually don't post that often unless I really like the topic or think I have something important to say.

This is a topic that I think is important, and I hope that enough of you will agree with me that we can get the Dev's attention (again) and see if we can get some additional balancing to be done.

If course this is all IMHO so if anyone takes exception to anything I have said then so be it as I am as entitled to say this as you are to read & disagree with what I just said.

I assume Cthulhu is the character to which you're referring? If so, you've either lost a great many matches, or you haven't played many.

I have about 130 wins, and I've probably played at least twice as many matches. That being the case, I'm still learning and tweaking my strategies after each match with (in some cases) less than optimal gear. A lot of the pvpers have their techniques down to a science, and you can't underestimate experience.

So if your win record is anywhere near your total pvp matches played, I would suggest giving yourself more time to learn the particulars of strategy before you conclude that pvp is unbalanced...don't give up on it.

There is no way to truly balance PvP, really. DR's system is probably as good as it gets: well, not really, but personally I think more fine tuning the match-up system is not worth the effort.

The PvP is balanced as long as you watch your own step. You simply cant enter the match as a level 50 with level 40 gear, that means instant death. A twink, where you complain about, specialized in gear. My twink currently has all level 17 rainbow gear at level 17, this means I cant get any better and benefit any +agility, +endurance +dps ect. ect. out of my gear. It is not unbalanced, you just have to play it right. Keep your gear close to your level.

There are other factors such as the level of skills, which is not significant for normal spells, but is for many of the buff spells.

Personally, I think that since the devs are working (in a way) to detach PvP from PvE, why not detach it altogether? Make it so that when your character is in Pwnston, you are automatically at level 100 with all stats free for you to distribute, have access to all skills at their full power and can take any level 100 Rainbow Equipment you want into the Arena from a weapons stash. Obviously, once you leave the area (say, Pwnston), all these "benefits" disappear, you don't carry any of it back to PvE. Basically, PvP becomes almost a separate game from PvE. The idea was brought up some time ago in World Chat, but no one posted it because it was figured most people will oppose it. Well, I bring it up now.

I understand the thinking but it will never happen. People that pvp alot spend alot of time tweaking thier gear and setups. I have a level 100 and a level 32. Both are decked out in full rainbows of course. My level 32 can win against all levels including 100. This tells me the scaling is just fine. Like Legendrunner said..you have to have your gear to your level..without that you are done.

The skills being at diff levels can be seen as a problem but its not something that cant be overcome. My 32 can outdamage alot of higher level rangers when we are both buffed with tff.

In terms of skills I was referring to things like BSoL, where skill level matters a lot. Also, some skills like Teleport are not available at lower levels. And while you could say "people spent a lot of time twinking out their characters", you could also say "people spent a lot of time to level to level 100": yet there is a balancing thing that greatly nullifies the significance of levels. As I said, it is obvious the Devs wish to make PvP fair for everyone so all can enjoy it: may as well detach it from PvE completely.

Umm, no. You missed the whole point. Anyone can be competitive at pvp at any level 10 and above. The group scaling is still a little off but solo play is dead-on. People try to fight a 100 with a level 50 who is wearing level 42-50 gear and get smoked..then they complain.

whoa,

I've watched conversations of this subject for a while, being new to almost all aspects of this game(online, multplayer, DR, forum) and only went on my 1st PvP like after lvl 25 just for fun.

Maybe I'm just old, but all this discussion about gear and #'s, and lvl's are only relevant if ur char. is stuck in timewarp, or am i missing something.
I understand l00 tops out(and that is beyond my understanding) but isn't there always new gear or alt. skill/tacktics not to mention lvl'g and new skills.

I don't really go into PvP for anything but fun and dying is def. part of that, really that PvP win # means nothing w/o the other #'s(losses, #'s of char, TIEs! etc.). And play in PvP is as varied as grouping in PvE, who knows what combo gona come up.

But what I do see from these disscusions is the various ways one can look at the play, and with so many variables, it's hard to imagine any one tacktic, skill is dominant or at least not forever.

I will tell u what i appreciate is a player that will let me at least try to kill 'em once after killing me for 14 times . I mean we do have 10-min.s to kill, you could go get some coffee, come back, forget to heal and uppps, i win one round, lol.

I guess i'm just not an ultimate fighter, i gotta let the little guy try to do something, I always appreciated someone that would let me change skills to try a diff attack if it's to one sided, but hey, that's just the way i roll.

Thanks for all the tips in this tread, cause I know u guys won't hold it againts me in battle, right?(note to self: change all ur char's names).

1) I agree that balance is still an issue in PVP.

2) A level 100 with full rainbows isn't a twink. A twink is a low level character who has excessively good gear that wasn't obtained through normal game play. For example, a level 100 would farm gear for a lower level alt in order to "twink" them. That twinked alt would then be used in PVP and would have a significant gear and/or attribute advantage over some poor fool who just wandered into the PVP world to try things out (Caveat - this assumes that the twink has any skills - an experienced PVPer will have an advantage over a twinked newbie if the experienced PVPer relies on skill and the newbie relies solely on gear).

I've played over 50 matches on and off over the almost 1 year I've been playing so my "record" is 3 wins and 50 something losses... Not a very good winning percentage (about 7 or 8%)... Keep in mind that this is over several chunks/heaves designed to make PvP more fair.

While I understand all of the reasons stated for leaving things the way that they are, there HAS TO BE A WAY for PvP to match up better.

I'm sorry but no one can tell me that a lvl 56 (at the time) Character can reasonably be expected to have a shot at a beating a fully skittled lvl 100 (or 2 or 3) who has tweaked and plotted and schemed to have the best gear/skills possible no matter what the lvl 56 character does and reading now how high level characters can get gear for their lower level characters to give them abilities beyond what they should normally be entitled to, this tells me that this is a not insignificant part of what is fundamentally wrong with the current PvP system...

To be beaten fairly by a character +/- 5 or so levels from me that is using level appropriate skills and gear is one thing. To be slaughtered without a chance by a character (or 2 or 3) that is over 40 levels more powerful then I am just sucks all the fun right out of it, especially when they are so bored they feel the need to show off while doing it.

And the low level "twinks" that suck you in and kick your butt because their gear/skills aren't what they could have gotten normally on their own, this to me seems a bit unethical if not borderline....

This is why I like my original idea of giving the person who is extremely outclassed a window of opportunity before the match begins(or anytime up to the 1st loss to see if the lower classed character has a chance) the option of leaving their match without incurring "Cowards Sickness" and their opponent getting a hallow/cheap win for doing nothing when it is obvious that it will be a one sided match with no hope for the lower level player.

OR

Have a true 1-1 PvP (balanced for skills/gear no more then +/- 5 levels from each other) and a separate Group or team Deathmatch (left like it is currently) so that way the people who don't like "extreme challenges" can still enjoy PvP and those masochists who like 2 or 3 or more on one combat are also satisfied.

I know it can be done, because look at the way this game has evolved from it's earliest beginnings to what it is now.. PvP can be handled the same way if enough of the community think it's a problem which will be difficult to get the long time PvP'ers to change their way of doing things which has served them well once they have a few hundred (or thousand) wins and now are unstoppable.

I honestly don't see the current system changing much more then it already has which while disappointing is not surprising as the Devs answer to NCsoft and need to cater to the masses for sake of revenue generation over balance. If you make PvP truly fair, you lose memberships, which causes people to leave the game and that causes a loss in revenue.

Economics 101 DR Style....

If it was to be truly fair we wouldnt ahve it at all considereing the ampount of tiem spent versus the amount of people who actually pvp....changes wont help ....we have wasted full upgrades and chunks trying to make it better.....it is all a waste of tiem and talent.talent that needs to eb spent making the pve game better

There a really easy way to make PvP more fair:

1. Stop rebalancing folks to level 101.

2. Only match groups of the same size with the same levels.

Of course, matches would take much longer to find until more folks are playing PvP. I think we can avoid doing these things by continuing to adjust the balancing system over time. I believe I made the prediction some time ago that it would take about 12 revisions to get it "right". We're on revision 4, I believe. Only 8 more to go!

Our rebalancing act makes the game more fair, but higher level players are oftentimes at an advantage. My level 58 mage does farily well in most battles... and always soundly beats any fighters that don't use Holy Roller.

The next major issue, in my opinion, is the outnumbered solo player balancing. I believe we can make some simple adjustments that will help this situation out quite a bit.

A secondary issue is that our matchmaking system doesn't wait long enough to find a good match. We could definitely afford to wait a minute or so to check for the best match possible before throwing you in the battle.

We're still continuing to develop PvP gameplay and features. It's not taking a great deal of our time, but it is very important to me that we keep improving it.

Keep on giving us the feedback! I love it!

My friend Hamilcar (lvl 100) is hating the new pvp system, bcuz it takes too long to find a match. And once my lvl 30, crackersd, had to fite him once (after the patch)!!! I thought system was fairer, bcuz i read somewhere that a lvl 1 cant fite a lvl 20 but that doesn't happen in my case.

Let us say for a moment there is no balancing at all.

Level 100: Yeah, I worked hard for my levels, I own! Even if a level 10 is decked out in full Rainbow, he/she cannot beat me because he/she did not put as much work as I did in leveling!

Then, came level balancing.

Level 100: Oh no! All my hard work with my levels mean little now! Theoretically, a level 10 who has not worked as I did for my levels, but has a full set of Rainbows can beat me!

Now, consider this then.

Random PvPer who "twinked" his/her character: Yeah! I worked to get a full set of Rainbows, and I own!

Then, along came my previous idea.

Random PvPer who "twinked" his/her character: Oh no! Now someone who has not worked for a full set of rainbows can still potentially beat me now! PvP is no longer about grinding for equipment, but is actually about player skill (???) and an element of chance!

I think the two situations, the level thing and the equipment thing, are similar in that aspect, no? It's all about "something I have put work in is now meaningless". So what? No one complained (much) when the level thing was implemented (possibly because everyone was too relieved that it was finally possible to actually get a match in PvP).

You said I "missed the point". What point, exactly? Isn't the point of PvP rebalancing to allow EVERYONE to enjoy PvP, and not just the hardcore players? Leveling to level 100 is quite hardcore. So is Rainbow Farming, no? A casual player probably won't have the time to farm for Rainbows, yes?

Conclusion: If the point of PvP rebalancing is to allow everyone to enjoy PvP regardless of the amount of time they put into the game, why not completely balance it out and just let everyone be on equal grounds?

Right now there's a dichotomy between the experienced PVPers and the PVEers who might want to experiment with or dabble in PVP.

I personally believe more players would pvp if the field were more balanced. Here's an idea I had:

1) When a match starts, set everybody to level 101

2) Strip all gear from the players

3) Set all attributes to their base, with a pool of points to be allocated, as if they had respec'ed

4) Have rainbow and skill vendors in the starting chamber and let each player choose whatever skills, gear and point allocations they want - allow 2 minutes for this process before a match starts.

5) Have random mythic items spawns pop up in the middle of a match - let players collect and use them.

6) Start the battle and let the mayhem commence.

7) After battle, all gear, stats and skills revert to normal. Nothing used in battle is kept.

This is basically a hybrid of an MMO/FPS PVP system. I was at a LAN party this past Friday, during which we played UT, UT2004, Red Faction and a couple of other games. In all these games, skill matters much more than gear. Everybody starts off with the same opportunities, but the players with skill are the ones who succeed. This suggestion would do the following:

  • Even the playing field
  • Still allow personal choice
  • Remove the dichotomy between the more casual players who want to experience PVP and the hardcore players who farm gear and levels for hours - both PVE and PVP can be fun and rewarding
  • Makes PVP entirely about skill
  • Keeps that DR vibe by letting players spec as Mages, Fighters, Rangers or Hybrids instead of forcing everybody to be a shooter like in a normal FPS.
  • Remove the gear and level grinds related to PVP!
  • Nobody would have to wait for a match or worry about being poorly matched!

Such a system would be, as far as I know, fairly revolutionary for MMO PVP.

Ripper that is an excellent idea. There should be 2 options for pvp hardcore and casual. Hardcore is you bring what you wear and casual being what you suggested. Will also give people a try using different builds.

absolutely agree ripper, you can leave the hardcore pvpers where they are with your suggestion. I do think if you decided to do casual the win totals count but you wont receive a KC if you do win. There has to be something to reward those hardcore pvpers who have farmed alot for their respected gear.

Necro, I'm sorry I missed your original post. Your idea seems even easier than mine (skills and weapons in pwnston rather than in the instance). *sighs* I am lvl 58 with almost 800 wins... but I'm kindl've a weird charachter... like a high(ish) lvl twink. It's not that it's THAT misbalanced, it's that you haven't spent the time to get the gear to use at your level. Plus I assume you haven't had much practice.

And necro -
This is not a bad idea for people who want to get by without the work of building the character... It would be cool if it was seperate or something... but don't get rid of the pvp we have now... I have spent months getting gear a piece at a time. PvP takes more DEVOTION than just coming out one day without experience. Of course you'll get slaughtered when you do that. The idea would be good for non die-hard pvpers.

There is skill involved even with having a good stash of gear... there are plenty of people who are competition out there.

BTW - has yet to get a usuable rb from a drop...

What would motivate you to get good gear @ 100 with this pvp system?

This isnt like other MMORPGs where you need top gear to make it through the next major dungeon.

Why would I stick around and get best gear for my 100? Gear for PvP would be pointless. Gearing up for a PvE boss just to farm same boss a little easier? Doesn't sound fun at all.

then have it where you can select from a pool of rbws and attributes but the win totals wouldnt count. Like the practice is now but like suggested.

I'm not too sure why grinding and hoping you get lucky can be considered "skill". It just means you have time to burn. As stated before, they already made levels mean little for PvP. I didn't hear anyone complain, "Then what's the point of getting to level 100? All my hard work is wasted!" At least, not vocally.

"Devotion". Ie. Hardcore players? Remember, DR is meant to be a casual game where you can "play for a few hours or just for 15 minutes!". And besides, people always say things like "PvP Skills" which really, means very little when PvP is so equipment based. So you feel good in decimating people by the sheer power of your equipment: great. What fun/challenge is that? Personally, I find matches where I completely dominate the enemy, or the enemy completely dominates me, to be unamusing. The fun matches are ones where both groups are evenly matched in terms of equipment power. Ripper's diea here will, hopefully, allow that to happen for all matches.

Necro, no one complained because level does matter to some degree atm. They have superior skills & can get T3 100s. a well geared twink vs well geared 100 comes down to 100 winning due to their advantage in skills & t3 gear. Under suggested system that skill advantage & t3 gear advantage would vanish.

Ok, so lets say Rippers idea was implemented.
Since there is no true endgame content or story line in this game why ever go past level 10?
Killing Rasputin or Abby over & over again is just like killing Sissirat over & over again. So in PvP, no need to hit 100 if I have same exact advantages at lvl 10.

Yep, either you are smoking someone or getting smoked unless 2 ppl who busted their [censored] for good gear face each other. Dont get me wrong, I love a good match but if a L10 (which takes few hours tops) get same advantages/gear/skills as some guy who put months upon mponths into their character why would I waste all that time?

If you want rippers idea I would call it PvP Battleground. It counts wins & rewards KCs just as pvp is now. This would promote "pure" pvp & strategies while still recognizing pvpers. (Maybe give titles to certain amount of wins in this area)

BUT a competitive PvP Arena with your own gear/skills would reward pvp tokens for rb gear & other rewards.
A player can only enter the this PvP Arena after they have had 25 (or x amount of) wins in the Battleground. That way, a newbie wouldnt accidentally enter the PvP Arena & if people like the battleground they can avoid arena.

Basically, right now we have two groups of pvpers. Casual vs hardcore. Why not have 2 entities that have rewards that cater to each respective group.

Even gear/skills with your choice.
Win counter/KC rewards

Own gear & skills
Ladder Ranking/Pvp tokens for rb/other rewards

Personally, I think it also sums up why more of the existing PVE population doesn't PVP. PVP is currently dominated by players who have the time and/or patience to grind away for that perfect set of PVP gear. Unfortunately, these folks are a small minority compared to players who would rather just login, play for a little bit and, maybe, have some various options for the type of play in which they engage. Want to PVE for an hour, then jump over to PVP for a quick change of pace? Go ahead. The problem is that the current model doesn't embrace the larger population of casual players. It should, since this is a casual player's game. Per Stephen:

Quote:

My advice to enjoy Dungeon Runners to the fullest... play responsibly.

I find the game to be most enjoyable about 2 hours at a time once or twice a week. The game is designed around short play sessions. Of course, nothing is stopping you from playing as much as you want... but running dungeons is bound to get stale if you do it too long in a single session.

Just my $0.02.

steve

I'm not saying I want carebear PVP. When you remove all the barriers, per my and Necro's ideas, then PVP truly becomes about player skill and pre-battle choices.

This describes me. I like PVP, I like most of the hardcore PVPers and I don't necessarily mind losing. I just don't feel the need or desire to grind and grind away looking for the perfect set of gear in order to be competitive. I'd rather just jump in and have a good, fun match, win or lose, with anybody who wants to battle, regardless of the amount of time they've put into their character.

Regarding your other comments, Fungus:

Quote:

Ok, so lets say Rippers idea was implemented.

People got to 100 before PVP was implemented. For them, it was just the challenge of reaching the maximum level. Also, you imply that PVP is what a players does after he or she reaches 100. Why should it be, though? [Every player, regardless of level, should be able to have a fun PVP experience, not just those who've reached level 100 and have farmed gear for themselves or their twinks.

I definitely like your idea, however, of having both competitive hardcore pvp AND some version of the ideas Necro and I put forth. I think it's a good compromise and it does giver players extra incentive through additional goals.

I understand that. However, without the balancing levels will be an overwhelming factor in PvP: with the balancing, the influence of levels is severely diminished. I think it is comparable to remove the benefit of grinding for rainbows in PvE. But that is a matter of opinion, so let's stop discussing that.

Ok, so lets say Rippers idea was implemented.

You assume the only possible end-game content ever is PvP. That is the way it is, and that is the way it will forever be. I do not think the Devs intended PvP to be an end-game content: I mean, they even balanced it so EVERYONE can enjoy it, hardcore and casual players alike. As for "no need to hit 100 if I have the same exact advantages at level 10"... you're right, if you only play DR to PvP. Besides, it is obvious that the advantage of level is a small factor in PvP, otherwise we would not have so many twinks running around. I don't see why removing it altogether will end the world.

Yep, either you are smoking someone or getting smoked unless 2 ppl who busted their [censored] for good gear face each other. Again, that is assuming all you want to do is to PvP. In that case, then do as you wish. In most RTS games, you don't spend hours and hours leveling and farming for equipment until you finally get the '133t Sniper Rifle of T3h Aw3s0m3n3ss', you just go in and have fun. I believe that's what the devs want to make PvP be. And, why does it matter if a level 10 has the same advantages as a level 100? I doubt very, very much that PvPing level 100s raised their characters to the maximum level because they ONLY want to PvP.

If you want rippers idea I would call it PvP Battleground. It counts wins & rewards KCs just as pvp is now. This would promote "pure" pvp & strategies while still recognizing pvpers. (Maybe give titles to certain amount of wins in this area)

Why are you separating PvPers and "Pure" PvP Strategy? Some time ago, when I claimed PvP was really more about equipment than skill, a PvPer requested me in game to change my post, because PvP is much more skill than I give it credit. Now you are separating the concept of PvPers and Pure PvP skill? But no matter. If a concession must be made, I am willing to do so.

I don't see why a PvP competition based on how long you spent grinding in front of your computer should be elevated above PvP that isn't about grinding, but about actual skill (and computer/internet quality and some chance, but that is irrelevant). But as I said, I don't mind a concession.

Basically, right now we have two groups of pvpers. Casual vs hardcore. Why not have 2 entities that have rewards that cater to each respective group.

Casual and hardcore are not mutually exclusive, depending on whether you consider "hardcore gamers" to mean "people who spends lots of times in games" or "people who are skillful in games". But I digress.

Geez you really nitpicked my post. Yet, seem to sugarcoat many of the issues. Ill follow your posting method:

I understand that. However, without the balancing levels will be an overwhelming factor in PvP: with the balancing, the influence of levels is severely diminished. I think it is comparable to remove the benefit of grinding for rainbows in PvE. But that is a matter of opinion, so let's stop discussing that.

Later in your post you say that level is a small advantage in PvP so why here do you claim it is such an overwhelming factor? Besides, I have never seen a successful PvP MMORPG that didnt give some advantage to the player that devoted more time to their character.

You assume the only possible end-game content ever is PvP. That is the way it is, and that is the way it will forever be. I do not think the Devs intended PvP to be an end-game content: I mean, they even balanced it so EVERYONE can enjoy it, hardcore and casual players alike. Ok, tell me what end-game content has been added for L100s since summer of 2007? Tell me what they have announced to be released anytime in next few months? Please tell me what does a L100 look forward to RIGHT NOW once they hit that cap? Kill bosses over & over like you did from 1-100? Tell me what else there is to do?? Seriously, why are you collecting this internet loot @ 100? To farm that same boss a few seconds quicker? About twinks...no, the reason you see so many twinks is because a) They are level 100s who can farm on sissirat/SC faster for Rbs than praying for a good Rb from Abby in a full group or b) newer players that dont want to spend months to hit 100 then more months collecting respectable gear for PvP. Theyd rather jump into collecting the gear @ L10. The can start PvPing even if their "perfect" gearset isnt complete. The good ones max their potential but also accept they will never beat a well geared 100...as it should be.

Again, that is assuming all you want to do is to PvP. In that case, then do as you wish. I doubt very, very much that PvPing level 100s raised their characters to the maximum level because they ONLY want to PvP.

And again, tell me what else a L100 is supposed to do?! Farm or PvP, thats it right now. Why do you think most L100s leave unless they are truly devoted to this game? Its soley due to the lack of end-game content. The ones that did stay pvp on their 100, pvp on their twink, or level up a new character. Im sure those 100s did enjoy the experience while leveling up & certainly didnt have PvP in mind. But, that doesnt change the fact that PvP is the only fresh (fresh as in constantly changing) thing they have atm. PvE is STALE @ 100, youve been there done that x1000.

Why are you separating PvPers and "Pure" PvP Strategy? I was calling Rippers system the "pure" pvp b/c it only takes skill into account, correct?. I guess I miss the problem with that statement. The other arena I suggested includes gear which would not be a pure balance, it would favor the better geared player. Nothing negative about that, just a different field of contenders. Collecting & optimizing gear with a specific skillset is a skill outside of the arena too. Preperation is a big asset.

Have you ever played a successful MMORPG with PvP? Every one has some element that allows a player to gain advantages directly related to time they put into that character, whether it be during the course of battle or before the battle begins. This is an MMORPG. That means it include the classic concept of improving your character. This isnt a FPS where stat boosting, gear enhancements etc dont apply. You want perfect balance in combat right out of the shoot? Many FPS offer that. (or as I suggested have a seperate type of pvp)

Casual and hardcore are not mutually exclusive, depending on whether you consider "hardcore gamers" to mean "people who spends lots of times in games" or "people who are skillful in games". But I digress.

Again, real nitpicky...call it whatever you want The Fiddlehoppers vs. Piffwhiffers. Bootomline, they need more than one "type" of PvP if they want PvP to grow here. And, I suggested 2 different types of PvP that would please different types of players, which is a start.

Lastly, players are going to [censored] no matter what. Someone, somehow will always have an advantage. Hopefully, however, the more options we allow the player (im referring to type of playable PvP scenarios) the less likely we'll have to have these type of threads.

You must have misread. What I meant was BEFORE balancing, levels are an overwhelming factor. AFTER balancing, its meaning is greatly diminished. And yes, almost every single MMORPG with PvP gives high level players the advantage: because they do NOT attempt to balance it for everyone. DR, on the other hand, does, so it is obvious the Devs are aiming for a slightly FPS like PvP rather than a traditional MMO PvP. I am merely giving suggestions on how it could be less traditional MMO grind like, as it seems the Devs intend.

The good ones max their potential but also accept they will never beat a well geared 100...as it should be.

Keyword there was “ever”. Did I say that there is end-game content right now? No, but the Devs have promised it, and it would be idiotic to assume there will never, ever be end-game content. You must think in the long term: a PvP system is something that you would want to design to last long term, not something that is going to go obsolete with each subsequent update. And just because they have not announced anything concrete does not mean they are not doing it: I’m sure they know level 100 end-game content is quite important. Besides, you seem to assume every single level 100 want to do nothing but PvP. That cannot be further from the truth: many level 100s I’ve seen have no PvP wins. They simply are not interested. I do not consider PvP to be true end-game content, particularly since being level 100 does not give you too great an advantage with the current system: PvP is open to everyone, it is not level 100 exclusive and it was not meant to be.

On the other hand, why on Earth does completely rebalancing PvP ruin “end-game” content for level 100s? Because they no longer have an advantage which really is actually relatively minor? Does that mean level 100s can no longer PvP? No. I’m sure that even if this idea is introduced, level 100s will STILL PvP. So why is this so called “end-game” content removed? Because they spent all the time levelling and don’t get an advantage in PvP? Ridiculous. People levelled to Max BEFORE PvP ever appeared. People level to Max without ever PvPing once, and will never do so. If you can show me one level 100 who ONLY went for Max level solely for the purpose of PvP, I’ll... never mind.

Regarding Twinks: the fact is they exist. They work extremely well, even if not top-notch well. That was my point: well-geared twinks already dominate 98% of the PvP community. To suggest that removing the 2% advantage (very bad maths, but you get the idea) of level 100s will be doomsday does not seem plausible to me.

But, that doesnt change the fact that PvP is the only fresh (fresh as in constantly changing) thing they have atm. PvE is STALE @ 100, youve been there done that x1000.

See above. Oh yes, lots of level 100s leave because of lack of end-game content. Some are tied to the game still simply because of PvP. Many are not interested in PvP but still play just for the community. However, answer me this: if PvP becomes completely balanced like said, do you really think the PvPing level 100s will mass quit because they lost their advantage? You said that PvP is the only “fresh” thing they have, and PvE is stale. In that case, should you not further separate PvP from PvE so that they will not need to delve into the “stale” aspect of the game, as you put it? But forget that. Which one is “fresher”: killing weaklings over and over and completely dominating everyone, or always fighting against evenly matched enemies with only skill (and connection and a bit of chance) to separate the winners and the losers? I think the latter will be more “fresh”, no?

I was calling Rippers system the "pure" pvp b/c it only takes skill into account, correct? I guess I miss the problem with that statement. The other arena I suggested includes gear which would not be a pure balance, it would favor the better geared player. Nothing negative about that, just a different field of contenders. Collecting & optimizing gear with a specific skillset is a skill outside of the arena too. Preperation is a big asset.

No comment. Personally, regarding preparation: if you have to prepare your gear from an entire stash within a short time frame prior to a match, is that not more challenging than farming for gear, with lots of time to plan it out?

Have you ever played a successful MMORPG with PvP? Every one has some element that allows a player to gain advantages directly related to time they put into that character, whether it be during the course of battle or before the battle begins. This is an MMORPG. That means it include the classic concept of improving your character. This isnt a FPS where stat boosting, gear enhancements etc dont apply. You want perfect balance in combat right out of the shoot? Many FPS offer that. (or as I suggested have a seperate type of pvp)

See above. Yes, I have played many MMOs, with PvP being biased heavily towards people with more time playing: that is the way MMO PvPing is usually like, I accept that. However, the Devs have already made steps to balance PvP out for everyone and greatly reducing the advantage of having more playtime. I am merely suggesting how to further that goal. It is obvious DR’s PvP is deviated from the traditional MMO.

Again, real nitpicky...call it whatever you want The Fiddlehoppers vs. Piffwhiffers. Bootomline, they need more than one "type" of PvP if they want PvP to grow here. And, I suggested 2 different types of PvP that would please different types of players, which is a start.

Sorry for the nitpicking. Force of habit.

Lastly, players are going to [censored] no matter what. Someone, somehow will always have an advantage. Hopefully, however, the more options we allow the player (im referring to type of playable PvP scenarios) the less likely we'll have to have these type of threads.

Oh yes, someone will always have an advantage. Even with this system there is the advantage of connection speed, of computing power, and the advantage of sheer knowledge and reflexes. But I think eliminating the majority of gameplay based imbalance is a start.

Your point? If you have a problem with this thread, don't be shy just come right out and say it.... TRUST ME, I wont be mad....

FYI: If the PvP system was more fair (which even by Stephen's own admission in this thread it's not and needs a ways to go to get there), I wouldn't *need* to have to make a thread like this one to get peoples 'attention' to what is indeed a real issue...

I don't know about you Fungus, but I'm not a big fan of being clowned by lvl 100's in a 2 on 1 PvP match that is so unequal that they get so bored they need to show off and rub my face in the fact that they are so much more "1337" then I am no matter what I try to do to help myself.

I'm not a sore loser, I just personally think that current state of the PvP system sucks... pure and simple, nothing more or less then that and by making this thread, I have gotten the desired result which is for people to open their eyes to this issue and I think I have done a pretty good job at starting something that has opened a constructive dialog which hopefully Stephen can incorporate in to a future build/chunk/heave of the game..

hey,

yes, I'm still reading this thread and although very interesting, indepth, views from almost every angle, alot over my lvl, so to speak, it's lacking something, like:

oh yea, fungus u misspelled bottom like 2-3 posts back, um and ha, haha, i'm kidding, I saying a JOKE, just trying to lighting the mood a little.

Dudes, i'm poking a fun stick and not at ur eye, ha. I am in no way a good speller, not even close. I surely support a long post w lots of info, but this is getting too deep for me. i'm just glad i don't have to try to keep up w this tread in game chat, lol.

And I don't care what anyone says, i'm gona go to pvp and i'm gona die, lol. but i did get lucky a few times, but only casue they were lots of char's and new ones at that. I certainly understand not being interested in fighting the same few unbeatable char. when the social list is low, but sa la vie. I'm really not interested in pvp per se, as my main game play, but I learn some things from it anyway, like I don't want to go there anymore, HA, i'm joking again!

See you down there, u can kill me all u want, it doesn't hurt, ha.

Himac(fig), Lomac(mag) and Shemac(rang), 35'ish all,
and now Loshemac, Newmac and rangemac, lol, see u down there, and bring a light, .
