Mage/Ftr can't use Holy Roller
#50756 - 03/10/08 06:54 PM

Im a mage that use almost all fighter armor and weapons with Aoe mage skills. My char name is HolyThunder(i dont know the link to see the build, could u look out for me plz?), and i use:
LM:Shadow Light
1: ring of fire
2: gas blast
3:right stomp
4: spirit of hare
5:light loafers
6:gim freak
7: bookworm
8:elemental prowess
RM: Holy Roller
All the spells work fine but when i use holy roller i keep MISSING altough i hv 299 atk rating. Why i keep missing this spell, is it like soul rend that u need to hit?
Could any1 answer my question, and if possible rate/say how to improve my build?

You're missing because your attack rating is dismal. Your ability to hit with weapons (attack rating) is based on Agility or skill (Way of the Roo, for example). At level 20, my fighter alt, LeCorbeau, has an attack rating over 3500K and still misses occasionally. Simply put, if you want to hit more often, increase your attack rating.

Btw, here are links that compare your build to mine:

But u missed my point, a lot of ppl say that holy roller is diferent than soul render becuz it dont miss, thats like the gas blast( is ranger skill, but dont miss it may resist but not miss...). So im writing this to say the problem, Holy Roller is equal than Soul or am i missing something?
ps: lots of mages use roler instead of soul to get his 100% hit spell.

I didn't miss your point - you and "a lot of ppl" are wrong. Holy Roller requires a successful attack roll to hit ( Linky... ). It used to be auto-hit, but not for several months now. Per Stephen:

Yeah, I understand your frustration on this Holy Roller change. The new Holy Roller requires a successful attack roll to hit properly. Divine resistance also adds another layer of protection against it.

Holy Roller is envisioned to be an intercept skill. It's meant to quickly close on a runner and immobilize them while you chop them up with melee attacks. Specifically, it's meant to catch those squishy ranged attackers that always seem to run when you get close to them.

The problem with it not being based on attack rating is purely a PvP issue. In PvE, this isn't a problem at all. Basically, the problem is that cloth wearers were able to use Holy Roller to immobilize slow moving plate wearers. Cloth users are already the most mobile characters and Holy Roller allowed them to dominate slower characters with ease.

Holy Roller has been changed, that's true. However, it's still quite useful to hit low defense rating characters. A pure intellect mage will find it to be very unreliable. Although a character with reasonable attack rating will find it to be useful.

It's important to note that Holy Roller increases your attack rating by 100% when it strikes. So, you can have a pretty low attack rating and still use it. Still, though, a no attack rating character will find it to be useful only as a closing skill.

Hey, we also added Mad Melee mastery which can increase your attack rating by a great percentage (at the expense of 20% health). It starts at +80% and ranks up to a boatload. This skill will really help you melee users (hybrids especially) hit more effectively.

Sorry for the change... but I believe it was needed. I hope you can find the skill to be useful again with your build with the tips provided. Let me know how it goes!

We didn't miss your point, you were horribly misinformed...

And why the HECK do you have holy roller on as a level 20 mage anyway?! Even if you did connect and hit, you have a str of 10, and mage equipment.... All you're doing effectively with holy roller is putting yourself right into the "lion's den" to get pounded, lol.

It seems you should try and focus your toon a little bit there before trying to "hybridize" - it's not easy to do and proves very difficult and ends up being a put-off for lots of first time players it seems.

With an AR of 299, you're lucky that you ever hit anything PERIOD, lol...

Holy Roller's Divine Damage aspect is based in INT, and mainly the skill is used for its rushing ability and stun. Leastways, that's how I used it pre-Holy-Roller-Denial-patch.

Yeah man I'm a "Rend N' Roll" paladin, with an attack rating of over 12k and I still miss, although I didn't know that the divine damage was int based, hmmmm, yet another reason I need a rb katana, oh well, have to settle for executioners....for now!
