First of all: Mayo > Morgacle Whip

I have thought about the comment made by an above poster about DR being "casual" all week. I had to revisit this thread to put in my two cents.

I wrote extensively on another gaming sites threads about casual gamers vs. hardcore gamers. Not so much that I contributed so much to it, but we discussed the snot out of the topic. Here is a snip from the poster, who I am in no way shape or form picking on!

Quote:

Because DR has been presented to the public as being *casual* many people have it in their minds that it is perfectly acceptable to come and go as they please. It is a 2 edged sword that helps the game by it's openness and approachability/playability, but at the same time can cause some social issues with that same openness.

Your complaint while having some merits (at least to me)is ultimately moot because to alter in any way the *openness* that is a hallmark of this game would be to fundamentally change it's structure and at this point I believe be more harmful then good to the game to try and add structure where none may be needed.

I have been a casual online gamer since I played my first MMO. Casual, to moi, does not refer to time spent or efforts devoted to a game. And the best explanation for that I can give is to define the opposite of casual gameplay, hardcore. Example: For 18 months of my gaming life I was in a hardcore guild in Everquest. You were expected to be online at a certain time each day. You were expected to drop anything you were doing when the guild leader gave an OTM (on the move). You were expected to know your way around different zones. You were expected to keep your gear up to date. You were expected to have so many alternate advancement skills, and be of a certain level. DR does not, in any way shape or form ask this. In that manner, DR is prime for a casual player. This should not suggest however, that it is acceptable to form a group, go soemwhere, and then drop it five minutes later without explanation, or even abandon a group without explanation. This is a common courtesy, well within the range of a casual gaming community.

Everyone from time to time has to go at the drop of a hat. But lets be real, maybe 1 in 10 truly has to leave so fast they can't offer at least a "sorry, gtg".

I have decided that the vast majority of DR feel it's OK to do this. I guess I can live it for a while longer, but I most certainly think twice about grouping with them in the future. Some I have ignored altogether.

Quiet, you.

No wonder you're freakin' out. The brainwashing hasn't had time to subside. Geez, I've been in favor of adding guilds, but I didn't know they'd turned into cults in some of the games. Let me change my vote on that...

I like Dunam have been in guilds like that But honestly that was an EQ thing. Eq was a harsh game on the players you had to play nonstop or you were left in the dust. It was more socially based than what DR is you had to group at least at higher lvls because you simply could not solo or at least not effectivly. I could not ever forsee DR guilds/possees turning into anything like that this is a fun loving hack and slash game and the Guilds/possees would follow suit. At least for the most part.

On a side note even in EQ while there was uber guilds that pushed you to the limit there were a lot of family guilds that were just there for friendships and commodery.

You have decided? That a majority feel it's ok to do this is just untrue. It's probably true that a greater percentage of lower lvl players, who may or may not have any intention of sticking around, are more inclined to disregard the concerns of other players in favor of their own. But the longer you are here, and the more acquaintences and friendships you develop, the less you will have to deal with that sort of behavior.

Of course, as others have stated, not all of even the veterans feel it's necessary to announce their comings and goings, but for the most part a good deal of the players are generally friendly and considerate.

It is simply a risk you take when grouping with some one you do not know. Just as in the "real world", you would (hopefully) not rely on a stranger to have your back and be there when you need them. Is it "rude" for some one to simply quit without so much as a word? Yes. However, I do not think anyone can blame the game or the environment it has created. The range of people playing at any one time is quite broad. You may pick a nice player to pair with and have fun, or you may pick some kid with nothing better to do than to join and then leave groups just to annoy.

What no one has addressed is the intarweb connection problem.
Sometimes you just lose your connection. Sometimes it doesn't come back right away.

Just the other night I was on and running and chatting (not grouped that time) and we had a massive storm come through that took down my connection and left it laying there for a day and a half. I had a couple of flashes and my UPS kept me going, but at least I had time to warn my neighbors before I "went dark." Some folks don't have UPSes (or forget to plug the router and dsl modem into it) and don't get much warning, if any.

That being said, if you can remember who you were grouped with when you CAN get back online, you should at least offer an apology.

Today, there was a level 66 who pulled mobs, ran behind the mages and sat there picking his nose. He consistently became a problem player. When the group abandoned him, he cried in market chat "PLZ LEVL ME IM 66".

People usually leave abruptly because players in a group are idiots or the group is doing something that isn't fun. There are a few level 100's who aren't much better than level 1 noobs.

Sorry, I would rather leave quietly than tell people they are useless and should quit the game.

and that's the reason I group almost exclusively with friends, or kick trolls as soon as they prove themselves so in my group when I try to give other/new players a chance. Works out about half the time.

I'm not here to babysit, or get annoyed by the babies. I only have so much time to have a good time, just like the majority of the rest of my friends. That being said, I can't wait till posses show up so I can always be grouped with them, and not have to worry about weeding out the donkeys, the trolls, and the children.
