Best strategy for a durable, powerful mage?
#49784 - 03/04/08 01:45 AM

ive been getting mixed messages going from "int only as base rely on items for end" to "split int and end 50-50"
basically im looking for a method above BSoL and mass MajorHP pots. Any advice?Dieben

People in this forum tell me that Acid Blight doesn't help mages because magic ignores def ratings. Maybe my file crackersd could help (he nonmem).

I have no idea what Weedboy is talkin about, but then who really can ever tell anyways.

Until I hit level 40+, I recommend putting some points into END, as BSOL doesn't mitigate a high enough % to mana to avoid draining your health quickly, especially during boss fights. How many points you put in will depend on what stat bonuses you are getting from your armor/weapons, there will never be a set rule, the more you play, you will find what feels good.

I prefer to have a little more health as health regens only when you are not taking damage, while mana regens while you are not using it, and I believe it starts to regen sooner than health.

Looking at your char, I think your would be better with around 3.5-4k health, which would leave you around 10-11k mana. I didn't calculate, I am just guessing. I don't think 2.6k health is enough and would guess you go through a lot of health pots and have lots of mana left after battles.

Also, drop Soul Rend, you don't have enough AGI to hit with your weapon, so it's not very useful, and drop fire bolt, as you already have a bolt spell (shadow bolt). Instead pick up: Gaseous Blast (and use all the time its available, a really low cost, high AOE spell) and Ring of Fire (another AOE spell). I think they will serve you much better in the long run.

Since you don't seem to read previous posts in this section, u will not learn what Tec said about magic going through def rating.

Did Pwncake Maker say anything that made you think he/she didn't know about Magic and Defense Ratings? He/She simply said he/she had no idea what you were talking about.

My reference to not knowing what you were talking about was more of a general statement about most of your posts, but applied to this post as well, since their build didn't use Acidic Blight, nor did they mention that in their post. You have a habit of bringing up random, extraneous information that is not related to the post. That's what I was referring to. Additionally, I don't know why anyone would want to get help from your crackersd file, after seeing how much help your posts offer.

I would lean more toward the int only and end from items arguement. I threw a few points into end myself but started going pure int after lvl 30 or so. For a big boost to your HP at the cost of some Mana, throw Gym Freak on your hot bar.

Here's my shadow build at level 65:

You can see that my HP is just fine by relying more on items for End than pumping too many points into it and I do plenty of damage.

Well..considering your advice in this case wasn't even on topic, I'd just advise others to go with the other 99% to be safe.
If you do ever get lucky enough to spit out some advice that is actually on topic and even helpful, good for you, but based on most of your previous posts, I would guess that it was a mere coincidence. But, yes, I do agree, that it is in the realm of possibility, however, small that realm might be.

Me? I haven't even posted on this thread, and I would hardly be the go-to guy for any definitive answer to whatever it is you're thinking I'm saying/said... Confused me is...

Don't lie Tec, I posted b4 about a build on mages. One guys suggested Acidic Blight but u said not to listen to him because magic goes through def rating.

Did that refresh ur memory? I think the guy was LR.

OH...you weren't talking about in THIS thread/post. Now I see. Yes - but that has also been said by many, many others when trying to help, although I don't think it is necessarily a useful nor valid point in this partuclar topic since YOU brought up the AB thing, and it wasn't at all what was necessarily being discussed. So, I would just let it go and let these guys have their discussion again...

Just in the spirit of being clear and letting this go - Acidic Blight ONLY affects defense rating of affected targets and has no effect on magic resistance. THUS, Acidic Blight is not helpful to a mage (generally) unless that mage is for some reason trying to do PHYSICAL (i.e. melee/missile dmg) instead of magic damage. AB in no way helps a mage cause more damage to or have a better chance of hitting an intended target with MAGIC.
