Dungeon Runners Retail Box?!
#49191 - 02/26/08 08:09 PM |
We've been thinking about a retail box for some time now. It was raised last year and died. However, it's being revived again this year. I'm very interested in what you guys think about this idea. So, let me spill the beans and see where that goes. Our current thinking for the retail version: $19.99 box Includes 6 months of membership. Includes exclusive access to the "Bling Gnome" pet. The Bling Gnome pet follows you around and picks up gold for you automatically. Also, every minute or so, you can tell him to pick up all loot on the ground and convert it to gold for you. This is currently being considered as a North American only release. Why not Europe? Simple. We're currently reworking our account creation process to make it much simpler and less invasive. Sadly, EU laws require us to ask lots of personal questions if we sell a box in some countries. This would apply to all free players as well as EU folks. So, we're shying away from that at this point. Also, we'd need to get buy-in from our EU office for making the retail box. And that's not likely to happen any time soon. We would also like to sell the "Bling Gnome" as an online purchase. However, we want to provide some number of months of exclusivity to the retailers before doing so. The biggest advantage to a retail product to me is that we'll get exposure to folks that aren't in the market for "free online games". This may open us up to a whole new set of customers that would never have given our game a second thought. Of course, we could all be smoking crack over here. What do you guys think? What you say may make or break this idea. ![]() It's important to note that this box will not affect your ability to play the game for free in any way. Everything you have now, you will still have. steve Edited by Stephen (02/26/08 08:43 PM) |

ok so basically we would get 6 months of play for 4 months of pay and the bling gnome to save us trips into town to sell loot........works for me...............and if the gnome is offereed alter like the players guide is.as something that can be bought then even better.......my only complaint I was hoping for the bling gnome sooner than that -------------------- Ghad. Anything that will bring more people to DR (thus keeping it alive) is good by me; as long as, as mentioned in another thread by a few of us, we are able to get the Bling Gnome as a seperate add-on code. The waiting a few months after a retail box release makes sense I guess - but could you sneak in an idea of making it available immediately and then to offset it just provide one (or more) special [random but level and account specific] Rainbows for the box set? -------------------- Main Character |

I know some people are going to hate me for this, but. !!!IF!!! You do this with the 6-months of membership and exclusive content like the Bling Gnome ( and mabey my idea of the exclusive 10-man dungeon) you should probobly charge more becuse if you sell it for $19.99 you whould be lossing money becuse people chould just multipul boxes to pay for there membership insted of buyingtime cards. |

I have prepaid my membership for a year; can the purchase of this box/membership be added to my existing account... or is it for a seperate/new account? Also, when the devs update the package, will it overwrite the gnome; or is it a seperate stand alone? |

Hmmm, weren't we just talking about this in another....nah couldn't be. I posted my thoughts earlier in the other thread but the short version is I think you should go for the impulse buy. A .99$ SKU in a POP display right at the cash register. Or in conjunction with big box retailers that sell Sony hardware, put your impulse display right next to the computers on the display floor and try and get the store to run game loops to show off the graphics. Still an impulse, still very cheap to implement overall. The 19.99$ for six months membership is a significant 30% discount over a download and a subscription. A very solid selling point, good perceived value. I just wonder who you really want to buy the retail box? When I first started playing this game I really felt it was probably the best beginner MMO out there. An easy sell to the non gamer and to the people who were intimidated by the culture of the hardcore MMO crowd. Because I haven't seen the demographic info I can only surmise from experience that most of the players are gamers already, many like myself have been gamers for a very very long time. If I went into a Gamestop or EB Games and saw Dungeon Runners as a 19.99 boxed game I probably wouldn't buy it, not even on impulse. I would probably go home and search out reviews and information on the game on the net first. How many of the rest of you guys have done this? I'd of course then try out the game for free and download the game from the net. Lost a sale. Of course games shops attract gamers, but on the other hand if you are talking about getting this onto the shelves at Wal-mart or Target where the gamers don't shop and you can pull in some non gamer impulse buys at 19.99 you might do ok. I'd really like to hear what Bogey has to say, if I recall he's in the games retail racket. And this one just came to me while typing this out. If you go the low route for the impulse buyers with the money you save from the box design/cost of packaging/shipment/ad marketing you implement ...street teams. Yep that's right. Burn 50K dvd of just the game files. Send teams out at things like Comicons, Lan Partys etc. Street teams could do things like organize demos and dvd give aways at their favorite local shopping mall. Run a couple of pcs with the clients open and free accounts so people can try the game. Give them the dvd to try it at home. How about summer music festivals? I go to the Vans Warped tour every year. Sony always has a booth, why not do one with NCsoft. I'm just riffing now so I'll shut up. -------------------- ------------------------------------------------- MamaAnarchia Level 100 Genius Arch Arcane Mage Parkaboy Level 75 Acrobatic Charming Frozen Summoner CayceP Level 28 Muscular Hardened Fanatical Fighter |

The boxed set sounds like a great idea. I would buy it for all of its benefits, plus the ability to have the actual, physical box and CD of the game. I have plenty of acquaintances that would rather install the game from a CD rather than download - it's just a "thing" I guess. But for me, as a collector (i.e. garage sale item collector...lol) I would love the box. The bling gnome is a perfect selling point (although I'm not sure that non-DR players would understand it's benefit without playing first, which is counterintuitive to buying the box, if you need to play the game first for free without buying it......hmmm oh well) and would definitely cinch my purchase. So thumbs up from Teclis. Oh yeah...and if there WOULD be a street team in Missouri...I live in the Springfield area, and I think Tet lives north of me, so we could be DA BOMB street team for SW "Misery"! Just sayin.... |

1) I like the idea of the full sized retail box. The price sounds right. 2) I'd buy the box for the 6 months of discounted membership and the gnome, but have some concerns:
3) More is better - a code for a mythic item would be great, but I have a slightly crazier idea. Many other games offer soulbound items like rings or capes for pre-orders or boxes. What if - and believe me this is a hypothetical (thanks Bob) - you were to modify the inventory for retail box subscribers to include an extra slot for a non-visible piece of armor like, I don't know, Boxer Shorts!!! Seriously, people would buy the box for the shorts alone, never mind the gnome! |

I really do like this idea for a few reasons. - When I tell my non-DR playing friend about what they are missing out on, I would really like them to at leave have a visual reference, a box on a shelf at the local store would do that. - Bling-gnomes are nice - Alot of people are still afraid of downloadable software for some reason. If they have a CD they feel safe to load the software for some reason.. All in all i like the idea, but I'm worried that the game would become overrun with 7 year olds. I know that they are paying consumers too (or at least their parents are), but if it explodes, the number of problems caused by a huge influx of young players would change the game. -------------------- Find me on Amaratha, Necratha, or Psiratha. Give me something interesting to uncover about the game. |

My suggestion to this is to release the Bling gnome first online via new patch or (name your price) expansion pack. Realeasing it online will start the buzz going and will get more people to buy the retail version of the game. I am one of the Millions out there that would rather buy the cd then Download the game. Every other MMO game that I have played I have been a slacker on buying the expansion packs because they always release first online to start the buzz going then Box set is released witha little something extra a piece of armor(Boxer shorts great idea) to keep it going. A lot of players Buy both this way. Pay first for the additions then again retail for the CD. Although to do more of an expansion pack on it i think you would need a new lvl 100 zone that is only accesible if you have expansion pack. |

Quote: It is not the idea to make expension packs, but to promote the game. Including a level 100 dungeon that is only accessable through the boxed evrsion isnt smart, as people like me probbably will quit because nothing to do, and also it destroys the free to play model, as a level 100 nonmember cant play the dungeon and still has to buy something to get access to it. |

The whole idea is getting people to buy the Retail box and get more people to play. A new zone that you can play if you so chose to buy this boxed version or download it after payment would increase the likely hood that more people will purchase it. I don't understand your statement " I will probably quit because it gives me nothing to do as a nonmember lvl 100" This would not change what you do right now. The game would stay the same for you, if you should chose not to purchase it. As far as Destroying the free to play model what do you think Buying the game is doing. Remember LR that this was put to players to get there Suggestions let Stephen decide what he thinks is good or not. |

True, and I give my thoughts too. My game play would be limited because I cannot access the dungeon, but maybe my friends can. Its like paying to access it, and it improves the gameplay as you can do more. And thereby I dont find it a good thing IMO, you know I do not speak for the devs, I speak for myself. |

You know it's really great that we the fans (and the collector nerds)are all gung ho to buy this boxed version of the game. Yes, it's a pretty good value for a game where we know exactly what we are getting. We are not the target market at all. The question really is do you think the average Joe or Jane will walk into a Walmart or Target and buy this for 20 dollars? These are people who would never go to a Gamestop or EBGames, even at Christams. Are they going to want to try an MMO? Is it going to be too time comsuming? Will it work on their 399$ desktop they bought at Sam's Club? This is uber-retail we are talking about here. For example Target has 1500 stores in the US. They probably won't put the game in every store to start. They will put the game hopefully in the stores with high PC game sales first. Say they go in 500 stores, and each store gets six copies to start. That's 3000 boxes just for Target. Walmart...has 4,000 stores. You can do the math. If this can come out by say August and got on the shelves for fourth quarter with an initial run of 25k boxes(maybe even more)just for the brick and mortar stores, it could do pretty well. I see many many noobs in our collective futures... On edit: my numbers are really too low. I didn't take into account Best Buy which has 1200 stores. They might take take 6 for each store or more for fourth quarter. I didn't factor in chains like Sears or JC Penney. I didn't factor in small electronics chains like Fry's that have only 35 stores, there has to be at least half a dozen chains llke that that are regional. So 50k boxes at least? It must be on the shelves for 4th quarter though, August 15 at the latest. -------------------- ------------------------------------------------- MamaAnarchia Level 100 Genius Arch Arcane Mage Parkaboy Level 75 Acrobatic Charming Frozen Summoner CayceP Level 28 Muscular Hardened Fanatical Fighter Edited by Mama_Anarchia (02/29/08 10:29 PM) |

The "Boss" just asked what we thought Mama...so we're just telling him. I'm by no means a marketing executive, a retail sales manager, or anything of the like. I'm just a (basically) normal guy, who likes to play the game and laugh. I chose to download and play the game because it looked fun, was easy to play, and quickly sucked me in with content. I don't need to "do the math," that's for the marketing guys at NCSoft as far as I'm concerned - I was just asked to say if I thought it was a "good" idea, and what I thought of that Idea like everyone else. I, we, did just that and nothing more or less. And as far as that goes, myself and a bunch of others would BE tha target audience if I hadn't already found it (this is my third MMO ever played), and I can tell you this for sure - If I picked up a game off the shelf that offered the retail box price as 2/3 of 6 months of membership, included something called a Bling Gnome, and (if ripper's great idea went in) the added benefit of a unique special item such as "magic boxer shorts"...I'd buy two of them and give one to my brother. ![]() The noobs I agree with you on - but they're going to be inevitable no matter how we cut it. The devs are just going to have to make world 1 bigger is all....lol. |

Totally forgot about replying to this topic so here's my thoughts: Making the Bling Gnome only avaible in the box makes me do major *sigh*-noices. Feels like us not living in the US missing out of something really cool and really helpful. It seems like an unfair advantage that the US players would be able to run and run and run just farming while the rest of us have to stop and go sell and stop and go sell ever so often. Also, the Gnomers would be able to get gold from every item while we other would have to pick up only the more expensive since we wouldn't get anywhere if we were to pick up and waypoint out to sell every little item. Bah... My suggestion is then that the same time you make the boxed version availible on the market, make the Bling Gnome avalible through online purchase. It could be a member only advantage too, allthough then I feel sorry for the none-members since they at least should have a chance for all objects and such. *a couple of minutes later* Been giving it some thought now and talked with a few people about it and we feel that the Bling Gnome would be great as a Members Only advantage. I would rather see you make a cooler looking armor or such as a Boxed version premier bonus. -------------------- May The Rainbows Drop As Cows From The Sky HDoL.eu - Horrific Domain of Legend - A Dungeon Runners Fansite |

Heh, I'd buy a box every six months just to save the extra $10 on my membership account. |

I have a lot of mixed feelings on this issue. So I'll try and list them as best as I can. I think that having a retail box would increase your credibility as a company and make you sound more legitimate. It may increase sales and increase "exposure" as you stated. I feel like my current subscription means nothing. If I am a paying customer, I would like access to all features. I don't think that monthly subscriptions + micropayment business models coincide very well together (if you plan on selling the Bling Gnome online as well). Payments on top of payments make me an unhappy camper. You will also exclude a large crowd of players (in other countries) from obtaining the cheaper membership price/Bling Gnome. Unless they can buy them via micropayments, which I already expressed my disliking for. You could still include some exclusive features that aren't quite as beneficial as the Bling Gnome. Ex. a mythic or boxer shorts as Ripper suggested. So I suggest that you move forward with this idea. However, consider tweaking it a bit so that everyone can obtain the benefits in a reasonable manner. |

Quote: I agree wholeheartedly. I am a non-US resident and a paying member of DR. I would feel bitter at not having the opportunity to take advantage of the discounted subscription the retail box offers (i.e. 2 months free) as well as missing out on the much anticipated bling gnome. IMO the only fair way to treat members who have been members longer than 4 months would be to extend their subscriptions by 2 months and grant them access to the bling gnome and whatever else you wish to include in the retail box. Being a member longer than 4 months is the same as having bought the retail box so the benefits/features should be the same for those members. |

From walmart.com "Shipping outside the United States We do not ship to Canada or other destinations outside the United States except for major offshore territories and protectorates of the United States." Still feels like they're have to find a better solution so that us European and other none-US players can enjoy the full game. I'm not staying if US players will have such an unfair advantage, and I know I'm not alone of feeling like that. -------------------- May The Rainbows Drop As Cows From The Sky HDoL.eu - Horrific Domain of Legend - A Dungeon Runners Fansite |

Th is is the second time I've heard someone say they were going to leave if the box was unavailable to them, personally I think it's a little ridiculous. I realize you want the same benefits as all the other players, and I and others have suggested ways around it. Do I think not releasing the game in Europe, or not allowing European players a chance to get the extra content at the same time as everyone else, is a mistake? Absolutely, but I don't make those decisions. There are hundreds of ways around this, while walmart.com doesn't ship outside the US, many other sites do, someone could ship it to you, you could buy it on ebay, just to name a few. Add that to the fact that it has been said that the Bling Gnome would be available for online purchase a couple of months after the US box release and I really don't see the big deal. It's not that big of an "advantage", just allows you to loot a little quicker. I just think ppl are going a little overboard with this, in my humble opinion. After further consideration I can see LM's point, the Bling Gnome would give farming players an advantage, but I still say a couple months wait isn't a big deal, if ya'll want I'll wait with my European homies, while the BG seems like it'd make things easier, it's not essential nor is it's availabilty/unavailability gonna make me quit a game I have fun playing out of spite. If the box was only available to European players, I'd complain a bit, then watch my friends BG's enviously and wait for the internet release. Again, it's just my opinion, personally I think it should be made available to all current members before the box release, that way the loyal players who have been playing before the "store version" wouldn't be left out in the cold. -------------------- And Lo, WeedNBacon Set Out On His Quest For The Non-Existant Rainbow Katana, Will His Quest Ever Succeed?
