[censored]? Melee Ranger?
#48815 - 02/21/08 07:39 PM

I saw a Ranger with ranger full set and he told me he was a ranger who ran around with dual daggers. Should Rangers do that?

Strictly speaking, you can do whatever makes you happy, but wearing ranger gear (that usually gives stats like: +agl, +ranged damage, etc...) while using melee weapons is going to make you less effective in battle.

There aren't any true classes in DR. Your class is determined by how you play, what skills you slot (which could be any combination from any trainer) and what gear you equip. If I had to attach a class name to the type of character you described, I'd call it a "Rogue", although the actual character title in game might be different. It's definitely a viable build as long, but like mess_ion_ic said, the player should have bonuses like +slashing, +agi, and +end to be as effective as possible. Many ranger items tend to have +piercing, +ranged damage and +ranged speed and +ranged attack rating, so the character would have less overall ranger gear from which to select and would probably have a combination of ranger and fighter gear.

A "rogue" like character would probably almost never miss due to high agility and have incredibly fast attacks (daggers are "ludicrous" speed). Think if it as dealing the "death of a thousand paper cuts".

Doesn't ludicrous mean slow?
It means laughable speed.

In this case, Ludicrous speed means that a weapon is absurdly fast:) It's also a reference to the movie Spaceballs:

Quote:

Dark Helmet: [as seeing the Eagle 5 go off with its Hyper Jets] Wait!
[raises his mask up]
Dark Helmet: What happened? Where are they?
Colonel Sandurz: I do'nt know sir. They must have hyper jets on that thing.
Dark Helmet: And what do we have on this thing? A Cuisinart?
Colonel Sandurz: No, sir.
Dark Helmet: Well, find them, catch them!
Colonel Sandurz: Yes, sir.
[picks up the intercom]
Colonel Sandurz: Prepair ship for light speed.
Dark Helmet: No, no, no. Light speed is too slow.
Colonel Sandurz: Light speed is too slow?
Dark Helmet: Yes. We're gonna have go right to... ludicrous speed.
[everybody gasps]
Colonel Sandurz: Ludicrous speed? Sir, we've never gone that fast before. I do'nt know if this ship can take it.
Dark Helmet: What's the matter Colonel Sandurz? Chicken?
Colonel Sandurz: [Wimpering] Prepair ship!
[Calms down]
Colonel Sandurz: Prepair ship, for Ludicrous speed. Fasten all seat belts.
[everybody fastens in their seat belts and locks all of the doors]
Colonel Sandurz: Seal all enterances and exits. Lock all stores in the mall. Cancel the 3-ring circus. Secure all animals in the zoo...
Dark Helmet: [Takes the intercom from Sandurz] Gimme that, you petty excuse for an officer!
[speaks into the intercom as Sandurz puts on his seat belt]
Dark Helmet: Now hear this, Ludicrous speed...
Colonel Sandurz: [Interrupts] Sir, you better buckle up.
Dark Helmet: [to Sandurz] Ah, buckle this.
[Into the intercom]
Dark Helmet: Ludicrous speed, go!
[Spaceball 1 begins to go so fast that Helmet is hanging on the ledge and is screaming as Spaceball 1 goes from light speed to ridiculous speed and then to ludicrous speed]
Dark Helmet: What have I done? My brains... are going into my feet.
[the sceneoutside changes from straight lines to some kind of Plad color and sails over the Eagle 5]
Barf: what the hell was that?
Lone Starr: Spaceball 1.
Barf: They've gone to plaid.

For the record, the speeds in DR are (from slowest to fastest):

Grandma < Slothful < Normal < Fast < Freakin' Fast < Ludicrous

Ty for the trip down Space ball lane that was great and I totally forgot about that in the Movie.

I have a friend "ranger" Type that does a lot of what you were describing often times I find that he is ineffective because he simply can do neither take the hits of a fighter nor deal the damage of a Ranger. Playing the line like that really makes both classes reasonably ineffective using some skills or some gear from another class is very beneficial(notice the difference from when I started not wanting to use anything but fighter skills) but I tried using a fighter build and I put Ring of Fire on it now my Fighter Has almost no intel. The ring of fire did minimal damage because of it and I had to have full mana to cast it. Luckily, I had a hammer with mana steal or I would have never been able to use it. Therefore, my advice to anyone is to find a good balance. Every class can utilize some skills. However, if you want to be a fighter then be a fighter, and that goes with all classes. (Grumbles about some fightermages that are ineffective)...
