Routers
#48680 - 02/19/08 05:41 PM

Hola Everyone,

Question that affects game but not really. Ok, what router would you recomend for a dsl/broadband connection. I am getting highspeed interenet for the first time in about 10 years(moved into the country). I need to have 2 pcs attached and one laptop at least. so will need a wireless signal. Also on a side note I dont want to spend a fortune on it.....

i have had good performance with the netgear wgr614 from wal-mart for a mere $40. i know 3 other people who have it and also have had no trouble setting up or using this wireless router. it has 4 ethernet ports and 1 uplink port for your cable modem, and transmits 802.11g wireless as well. from personal tests, functional signal strength is about 45-50 feet

There are a lot of different possiblities for you.. if price is your concern, just shop around. Just make sure everything is compatible, like using G protocol. N is starting to become popular, and I heard that the manufacturers have settled on a standardization of the protocol. Stay away from Y, as that is still in development. G has been around for several years and is compatible with the B, so I think that is a good choice.

Airlink makes a cheap 4 port WAN router.. I owned one and it worked fine for 4 years. Around my area, they are available on sale for about $20. PCI adapters or PCMCIA wireless adapters can be found on sale for ~$13. You may not need the adapters, as most current PCs have LAN/WAN solutions.

I just purchased in November a replacement Motorola cable modem for $45, plus mail-in rebate of $20.

Besides your nearby computer supply store, consider office supply stores, and of course, online stores.

2 questions.

1. are you getting DSL or Cable?

2. What company are you getting your service with?

I believe the reason SirAydenTrey asked is because you need to ensure that your modem/router is compatible with your DSL Provider. According to their website, Windstream will supply a modem free of charge (the modem may or may not have wireless, however).

FYI, you may not need a separate router. My DSL modem has Wireless built into it. I don't have a separate box between my modem and my PC.

I have at least two Hard wire comps that need to hook up PLus one laptop at this time these needs may change. Thats why I'm going the route of a router.

I know That's what I'm saying, take a look at your options, because you may be able to do everything you need with a single piece of hardware. For example, here are some DSL modems, with integrated routers and/or switches, that let you connect up to four PCs via Ethernet and have wireless capabilities:

Belkin
Netgear
D-Link
