I'm so new, it HURTS.
#45621 - 01/28/08 11:14 AM

Good morning, Dungeon Runners!

I'm a new guy, as of yesterday (which was Sunday 27-JAN) and I'm pretty much digging this game. But I haven't quite gotten my ears around a few things, so I was hoping to use this thread for (A) presenting myself in a friendly manner and being nice to people, and (B) leeching as much freakin information as possible so I can totally start smashing on you all.

The basics: I'm too old to be playing video games, too young to have lost so much freakin hair, and too pretty to show pictures. I'm starting out with a Ranger with the hopes of making full use of the AGI attribute...and what's this I see about cannons?

So, I've picked up a handful of good newbish tips from running around this here forum. And I'm sorta looking for more pieces of info/advice with this thread. Here's the current status of my info-seek:

COMPLETE
- Those bubbles at the end of the skill bars are for the mouse buttons.
- Passives need to be in the skillbar.
- I can buy skills from the other classes.
- Multiple poison arrows don't stack.
- Clearing on INSANE, especially early, is INSANEly beneficial. (I don't even remember picking a difficulty at the beginning, yeesh)

INCOMPLETE
- Changing classes? Wha? When and how? Since you can buy those 'unique' skills and equip/unequip those passives, is there really "class changing", or are y'all just claiming a character change by re-purposing your dude/dudette?
- Is there an easier way to drink potions than clicking the red potion at the bottom of the screen?
- Is there anywhere on the website/www to see how skills progress, damage-wise? Do some skills peter off and become useless in the long run (e.g., I don't want to invest many points in INT, so poison stuff will eventually lose its edge)?

It seems like I'll be spending dozens of hours building up my first real character, and I don't want to hopelessly mis-build him and end up hating what I've done. And I haven't really seen anything usable in the Ranger forum or in the Builds forum that deals with, you know, Build suggestions for Rangers.

So....hello! And, help! And then...watch out!

Yeah, I'm level 9. But I ain't skeered.

Multiple poison arrows don't stack.
True. However, per Anson, different poison spells will; Gas, Nox, Shot.
And although shots dont stack, continuous fire will prolong the affect. I would go gas, poison shot, nox, normal shotx3, poison shot, nox. Something like that to economize mana. Also use other aoe spells to clear masses.

I think people refer to respecing thier character. Open your character sheet by typing a c. There is a respec button there. Allows you to change the way youve spent all your points previously. Do it as often as you like. Cost ramps up as you level.

Space Bar (but can be changed via the options menu)

Try the http://www.townstons.com wiki for some good info.
added- Int will increase poison damage, so putting points there is not totally a bad thing.

Also, try some of the xml viewers that are available and type in a character name to see what people are using and skills they have on their bar.

Rainger did a pretty good job of answering most of your questions; I'll elaborate on a few.

I would say 90% of the skills in game are worth investing in. The only one that is noticeably subpar is righteous stomp because the damage of the skill doesn't seem to be worth the skill invested. It is however a great skill for 1 point since the knockback is pretty useful.

Poison does not lose its edge. You can play a poison ranger all the way to 100. Like any character that focuses on one element, there are mobs that are more resistant to poison, but that doesn't mean they are immune to it - just harder for you to kill them. They can be killed by poison, or you can just opt to skip them. A well built poison ranger can rival many of the more powerful AoE mage builds in leveling efficiency.

As the others said, one of the good things about DR is that it is very easy to change your character if you aren't happy with it. You can respec your ability scores as many times as you like - some players respec almost immediately if they get certain loot drops. Skills can be changed just as easily as long as you have gold to buy them.

Go to http://www.thetownstons.com. There's a good breakdown of what a poison oriented ranger would look like. I also put together a more general build guide in the Guides forum as well - but that's for any character and is not focused on specialties.

Rainger - thanks a bunch for answers and especially the WIKI link, a ton of good info in there. I now have a much better idea of how to build my character, skills-wise.

FSeries - thanks; and I'll elaborate a little further on my anti-poison stance. Perhaps you or someone else can help me on the finer points.

1) It seems like a lot of the Poison vs. Crit debate breaks down to 'groups' vs 'bosses'. And as a general point, I like the second better.

2) AGI is required for accuracy. AGI also boosts damage for the Crit Ranger, while the Poison Ranger needs INT to boost damage. Obviously at similar damage, the Crit Ranger wins on accuracy.

3) Poison-resist monsters exist; while not in huge quantity, they're a factor to consider. I don't see any talk of monsters with phys-resist.

4) With nearly-similar damage output, the Crit-Ranger can focus their skill slots and mana consumption on fun crowd-control stuff like Stomp+Smackdown.

Of course, I could be "wrong" with each of these points. On #1, the whole "group aggro" theme in DR means I WILL get swarmed. Like, every time (non-member gear). On #2, I might NEED the int for mana supply even as a Crit ranger. On #3, maybe there are phys-resist monsters.

So basically, I'll be playing and seasoning my character "to taste". But I still am surprised to not see more tactical/mathematical discussions on this board - maybe because everyone else has built their to their own preferences already.

The more I think and type about this stuff, the more questions I get. Like spell effects - is the slowing of Ice Bolt a STATIC effect, or it dependent upon INT? If I can cast Ice Bolt with base INT and get the 'full' slowing, then I think that's worth the skillspace even without the damage. That question doesn't seem to be addressed on the board.

Crit rangers don't need int at all. In fact, they may be one of the few builds that don't need any skills at all, though a few like Trigger Finger Frenzy help. All you need is to pump up Agi and get a few +end items to help with survivability. The build is very gear dependent however, and having a good fast bow with lots of +crit is a must.

There are no physical resistant monsters that I can think of, so fighter melee and ranger normal arrows affect everything. However, don't underestimate AoEs. My mage build is largely AoE attacks and it can demolish most bosses with ease as well as take on the fodder around them. I suspect poison rangers can do similarly well (haven't built one so I wouldn't know for sure). Poison in my experience does the most damage of any element out there - my mage's gaseous blast does well over 13k over 9 seconds - that will drop champions and even some heroes with a single application.

It's a 1 point wonder. Ice bolt's movement/attack rate debuff works regardless of your intelligence. Higher intelligence only means you do more damage with it and you can spam it more. However, in PvE, it's almost meaningless unless you're spamming it against a boss. Against fodder, use unnerving shout which has a simliar (exact?) movement and attack rate debuff but affects a much larger number of targets. By the way, the debuff for ice bolt does NOT stack with itself, though ice bolt and the debuff from unnerving shout do stack.
