Movement
#45466 - 01/26/08 04:05 PM

My only complaint (a combo) about DR is the movement/camera. How about...

1. Movement similar to WoW or better yet, Mythos
2. An auto-centering camera

Make these changes and you will have a few more previous players come back.

Thanks.

1. You can make your view like WoW or Mythos - roll your mouse wheel out all the way or in how you like. As for the "terrain following" effect, etc.......why......

2. Why... If it autocentered when I moved, say in widow makers, or in a busy boss fight like SC where I want the camera to stay still when I rotate for better vantage point bc of background/mobs, that would be very very annoying. If it could be turned off of course, maybe, but I still dont see the need. Its not too hard to push A or D to get the camera where I want.

Oh yeah forgot the last part; I really dont think that the camera angle of the game is anyone's major concern or that it made people leave/will make droves come back - but that may be just me. We'll see now that there's a forum post of the topic.

Autocentering would be annoying as all hell, and I dont understand what you mean by WoW style movement. If you mean strafing with halo warthog style movement then no as well.

1) What do you mean? I play WoW and have my keys set up exactly the same as in DR (a custom WASD+QE setup, I swap Q and E for A and D). Mythos has click-to-move, which DR also has. On top of that, DR has better targeting than Mythos does (Mythos forces one to explicitly click on a mob, whereas you can simply mouse from one dead mob to the soon-to-be-dead mob in DR) What else do you want?

2) What do you mean by auto-centering? A camera that moves with the terrain? A camera that automatically rotates based on the targeted mob?

1. Mouse movement, i.e. hold right, click left. Me personally, don't EVER WASD, that's just my playstyle. I am a mouse gamer - keys are for macros, binds, etc. Most games allow you to move either way. I am currently mouse-only in WoW, LotR, CoH/V and Mythos - moving by holding right anc clicking left. Mythos is also click and move, however, you can move identical to WoW (for mousers).

2. Centering. When I move in DR, around corners, etc. I would like an option to move and keep the camera behind me, instead of hitting C.

It's about option. If you don't like it, don't enable it, that way it won't be "annoying as hell" to you.

One way to go around corners is to move your camera into the upcoming angle and use Q or E to move into position.

I think the camera/movement system works fine. I imagine it would take some getting used to, though, if you are used to a different system.

I use the mouse for all movement and camera adjustments. Perhaps it is because I have not played other MMOs, but it works fine for me.

As for corners, have you tried adjusting the camera before you actually walk around? i.e.- There is a left turn ahead, adjust the camera to the left (with the mouse), then click an area beyond the corner. Works great for me.

One of the big things we've been struggling with since we inherited this game is its terrible camera code. We're working to fix that, but it's gonna take some time.

The biggest problem I see with our camera is that it can't collide with objects in the world. This causes us to do things like fade out objects and enable X-ray vision. Those two features are "hacks" to get around our engine's lack of ray casting features.

It's no coincedence that we're replacing our graphics engine this year. We hope to address this problem as well as many others this year.

If you want to recreate a "point & click" friendly camera view:

1. Press "V" to reset your camera to the default.

2. Use your mouse wheel to scroll all the way out.

3. Point and click!

We need better keyboard / mouse mapping features so we can let you fully customize your options and perhaps share them with others.
